I understand that this song was written in 1968 and set to a traditional tune, (additional tunes thread NO 5). I know that the 'Thrashing Machine' would fit the bill, but does anyone know what the original tune was?

Hmm. Lost the message. Here it is again.

The song is by the late Matt McGinn. You can find it in the DT as "The Pill", with a MIDI of the tune.

James McGowan has begun a web page as a tribute to Matt. I only wish the man himself was around to write a song about that. He was a one-of-a-kind who died too soon.

Many thanks George, actually , the song I am talking about was written by Brian Pearson. At least I now have another one to ad to the list.

BRIDGET AND THE PILL  words by Brian Pearson, set to an unspecified traditional tune.  I recently made a midi of this from the notation in My Song Is My Own (ed. Kathy Henderson et al., 1979) to fill the gap in the DT file.  It hasn't gone to the  Mudcat Midi Pages yet, but I'll put it up at the  South Riding Folk Network  site as a temporary measure:

Click for Bridget and the Pill.

Peggy Seeger has done this; don't know if she recorded it; I heard it live. A LONG time ago.

That's odd; it's a standard midi.  I don't usually use WMP, but I've just tried it and it plays for me, though I did have to start it manually by pressing the "play" button.  Have you tried saving it to disk and then playing it?

I have now tried saving to disk, (A:drive) with the same result, - a black screen and no sound. I have the same problem with all mudcat midi files. However, Mickey MacConnell's 'The First Good Friday' a beautiful song - worked fine on my WMP. IT DID have the message 'downloading media' before starting to play, which may be relevant; otherwise I'm completely 'bamboozled.'

Hmmm... can you play any midis at all?  If you have Netscape, you could perhaps try the native midi player in that...

Yes I can but it seems to be a bit irratic. I do not have Netscape, I have Internet Explorer. I have been trying different web sites with midi files. The Kirsty MacColl site 'Voice of an Angel' works fine, (after 'connecting' and 'downloading'). I then have to play the file by clicking on 'play'. (This uses WMP). I tried a 'Carpenters' site and the majority of the files did not play. 'Music of the 30's and 40's in Real Audio' uses 'Real Player' and works fine. I'm afaid this is geting a bit technical and off the original theme and I apologise.

There seems to be some confusion over file formats here. The music on the Kirsty McCall site may play on WMP but they are in WAV format not MIDI.

I'm afraid I'll have to take your word for that.

The midis on the Traditional-music.co.uk site don't play (no sound) either. Actually, the problem started just before the first time I upgraded my WMP. I have tried the tools - options - format - midi files - ok route; but the computer seems to default back to 'media files' every time. Looks like the problem could be at my end.

vindellis, I think that the format option only controls the file types that are opened by WMP when you click on them.

I'd guess what is happening is that the Media Player appears to be playing the track (you can see the progress bar move but you get no sound).

The first and most obvious suggestion is to go to Volume control and check that the MIDI volume (as well as the master volume) is turned up and not muted.

There is definitely some sort of mix up with volume set-up. 1) When the 'speaker' icon has lines radiating from it, the cusor highlights the word 'mute'. At the same time; if I check by following the toolbar route of:- play - volume - up/down/mute, I find that none of the last three has a tick against it. 2)If I click aginst the word 'mute', (or press F8), the radiating lines disappear from the 'speaker' icon and the cursor highlights the word 'sound'; and at the same time the word 'mute' on the toolbar has a tick against it. 3) the function keys F9 and F10 operate the volume contol up and down, as they should.
