Need to fill in the blanks in my mind for a song I love to sing. Here, I think, is the way the song starts:

Mellow the moonlight to shine is beginning
Close by the window young Eileen is spinning
Bent oer the fire her bind grandmother's sitting
She's moaning and crooning and lazily knitting.

Chorus: Merrily, cheerily, nosily whirring
Spins the wheel swings the reel while the foot's stirring
Brightly and sprightly and airily ringing
Sounds the sweet voice of the young maiden singing....

Thank you both kindly. This song was a favorite of a friend who died recently. Whenever we were at a sing, a weekend, a party, Ruth would ask me to sing it for her. When I would demur saying were a couple of other songs I'd like to sing when my turns came, she would plead with me to sing it, and I would. I have not sung it for a very long time, and the words were melting out of my brain. I am going to sing it again, tomorrow, and dedicate it to Ruth. Happy traveling, Ruth. Your voice and smile linger on.

The song will always be associated with that great songstress Delia Murphy as indeed will the number "The Blackbird."

I heard this done by three young girls who accompanied themselves on harps. They sounded like angels. So very pretty.

I must admit I have yet to hear an angel but look forward in due course to hear the heavenly choir. :-)

My grandad used to sing this to my Mum so I made a point of learning it and now when I sing it I always think of my mum (now sadly dead) whose name was Eileen.
