Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST,Chris Stobart Date: 08 May 16 - 06:58 AM In that case you would have met him the year he died. According to Wikipedia he would've been no more than 40, having been born in 1932, so goodness knows what finished him off at such a tender age. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST,John in london Date: 10 Aug 15 - 07:39 PM In 1972, whilst living in London, I met a young Liverpool girl (K.J.) who took me from London back to her home for a weekend. I met her uncle who she told me was the man who wrote Whiskey On a Sunday, he used a different name in real life, but when I met him he was very jovial and seemed to be a very artistic man. I know for sure it was the guy who wrote the song but he did have two names. It was accepted within her family that the man needed a pseudonym. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 12 Apr 09 - 01:28 PM A Glyn Hughes (probably the 'Guest' who posted above) wrote a book called 'Millstone Grit' about the Southern Pennines in the early 1970s. I bought a copy from a second-hand bookshop years ago and it sat unread on my shelves for ages. Then, one day, recently, I took it off the shelf and read it - and I realised that I had neglected a bit of a masterpiece. It's a perfect evocation of a particular time and place - one of those books that sticks in your mind - there are episodes in it that are so vivid that I could almost swear that I have experienced them myself. If you come across a copy I recommend that you read it - especially if you have any sort of relationship at all with the Southern Pennines. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: greg stephens Date: 12 Apr 09 - 05:54 AM Have just had an email from the novelist/poet Glyn Hughes (who wrote earlier in the thread). He confirmed that he didn't write Seth Davy! |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 11 Apr 09 - 11:03 AM I don't know if this has been mentioned previously, but Glyn had a regular column in the British music mag BMG(i.e. banjo, mandolin, guitar) sometime in the 1960s. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: The Sandman Date: 11 Apr 09 - 06:28 AM This was very much a Spinners song, and I'm sure that's where to start looking for more about the song and the writer, and the story behind it. Here is a page about The Spinners. And that page gives a link to Hughie Jones' homepage - he being the only one of the Spinners who is currently performing, and well worth looking out for. I imagine he'd very likely know.[quote] Mick Groves is still peforming. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Matthew Edwards Date: 10 Apr 09 - 03:15 PM I've posted some information I've found out about Seth Davey and Glyn Hughes on another thread Lyr Req: Whiskey on a Sunday. The 'facts' about both people are a bit sparse, and sometimes a bit confused. However the Glyn Hughes who wrote the song about Seth Davey died about 1972. He was a songwriter and guitarist amongst many other roles on the Liverpool scene in the 1960's, and he appears in several accounts of the period. Hughie Jones, Brian Jacques, Jaqui McDonald and many others are all still around from those days and could probably add their memories. Matthew Edwards |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: greg stephens Date: 10 Apr 09 - 07:19 AM Yes, Glyn, and you are a novelist too, and a very good one.You even wrote a book about a fiddler! But what people hear want to know is, are you the Glyn Hughes credited with writing Seth Davy? |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST Date: 10 Apr 09 - 05:11 AM To put paid to all this: I am Glyn Hughes, poet living in orkshire, England. You can find all about me on my website, www.glynhughes.co.uk and on the British Council site, www.contemporarywriters.com |

Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Les in Chorlton Date: 24 Apr 05 - 02:58 AM I think Jackie (Jaqui?) and Bridie did the song a lot too, with that dancing doll on a plank. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Blackcatter Date: 23 Apr 05 - 04:10 PM Hi all - I'm looking for info on Glen Hughes - has anyone found out more, or can anyone find out more? Thanks |

Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: greg stephens Date: 28 Mar 03 - 05:51 AM Interesting that a modern song of huge popularity seems to be resisting the combined Mudcat mind to come up with even a vague idea of its origins. I'm most intrigued. Someone must know who Glyn Hughes is! |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Mar 03 - 07:42 PM Well, it would be - the chorus is presented as the song sung by Seth while he was alive, and the rest of the song is as written long after his death. A lot of people have featured it, apart from the Spinners - Max Boyce, and Rolf Harris, for two. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: greg stephens Date: 27 Mar 03 - 12:44 PM I know absoluely nothing about this, except one titbit: I seem to recall that the chorus (at least the words of it) is a lot older than the verses. |

Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Little Robyn Date: 26 Mar 03 - 05:32 PM No, on second thoughts, he wasn't. I'm thinking of the one named Hugh. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Little Robyn Date: 26 Mar 03 - 02:41 PM Wasn't he one of the Spinners? |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: IanC Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:57 AM Not really. See, for example, "Molly Malone". |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:54 AM It would be a fair assumption that he came from Liverpool. |
Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: IanC Date: 26 Mar 03 - 11:12 AM I asked again, and it isn't the Glyn Huges above. Here's his reply. Subject: RE: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: IanC Date: 20 Apr 01 - 08:48 AM John I've searched for hours, and the only conclusion I can come to is that this might be him. I've e-mailed him to find out.
Cheers! |
Subject: Who is/was Glyn Hughes From: GUEST,John Hill Date: 20 Apr 01 - 06:19 AM Does anyone know anything about Glyn Hughes who wrote the song about Seth Davey. (Which has varous titles depending on who's recording you listen to). When was it written? Is he still about? There have been previous inconclusive threads about the subject of the song but nothing about the writer. One would assume he is from Liverpool the same as Seth Davey was... assuming he really did exist. |
