In that case you would have met him the year he died. According to Wikipedia he would've been no more than 40, having been born in 1932, so goodness knows what finished him off at such a tender age.

In 1972, whilst living in London, I met a young Liverpool girl (K.J.)
who took me from London back to her home for a weekend. I met her uncle who she told me was the man who wrote Whiskey On a Sunday, he used a different name in real life, but when I met him he was very jovial and seemed to be a very artistic man. I know for sure it was the guy who wrote the song but he did have two names. It was accepted within her family that the man needed a pseudonym.

A Glyn Hughes (probably the 'Guest' who posted above) wrote a book called 'Millstone Grit' about the Southern Pennines in the early 1970s. I bought a copy from a second-hand bookshop years ago and it sat unread on my shelves for ages. Then, one day, recently, I took it off the shelf and read it - and I realised that I had neglected a bit of a masterpiece. It's a perfect evocation of a particular time and place - one of those books that sticks in your mind - there are episodes in it that are so vivid that I could almost swear that I have experienced them myself. If you come across a copy I recommend that you read it - especially if you have any sort of relationship at all with the Southern Pennines.

Have just had an email from the novelist/poet Glyn Hughes (who wrote earlier in the thread). He confirmed that he didn't write Seth Davy!

I don't know if this has been mentioned previously, but Glyn had a regular column in the British music mag BMG(i.e. banjo, mandolin,guitar) sometime in the 1960s.

I've posted some information I've found out about Seth Davey and Glyn Hughes on another thread Lyr Req: Whiskey on a Sunday.
The 'facts' about both people are a bit sparse, and sometimes a bit confused. However the Glyn Hughes who wrote the song about Seth Davey died about 1972.
He was a songwriter and guitarist amongst many other roles on the Liverpool scene in the 1960's, and he appears in several accounts of the period. Hughie Jones, Brian Jacques, Jaqui McDonald and many others are all still around from those days and could probably add their memories.

Interesting that a modern song of huge popularity seems to be resisting the combined Mudcat mind to come up with even a vague idea of its origins. I'm most intrigued. Someone must know who Glyn Hughes is!

Well, it would be - the chorus is presented as the song sung by Seth while he was alive, and the rest of the song is as written long after his death.

A lot of people have featured it, apart from the Spinners - Max Boyce, and Rolf Harris, for two.

Does anyone know anything about Glyn Hughes who wrote the song about Seth Davey. (Which has varous titles depending on who's recording you listen to). When was it written? Is he still about? There have been previous inconclusive threads about the subject of the song but nothing about the writer. One would assume he is from Liverpool the same as Seth Davey was... assuming he really did exist.
