Subject: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Apr 01 - 02:36 PM According to a musing Michigan friend of mine (may not be original): Can the future be far behind? Reminds me of our old chant from our Caulking Gun Drill Team: Radiation in the breeze, Blame it on the killer trees! Have a nice day ;-) |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Melani Date: 22 Apr 01 - 03:49 PM My daughter just asked me if George Dubya actually said something about exhaling causing greenhouse gas emissions, since she has heard several jokes to that effect recently. If he did, I guess I must have missed it, but I have the most uncomfortable feeling that it really is a quote. |

Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Apr 01 - 08:38 PM I just heard that the first Earth Day was some 25 years ago, which reminds me that on that day I was picking my banjo on the front steps of the auditorium at Michigan State University when some student organizers of the official presentation came running up and asked me if I'd play some songs to entertain the audiance which was getting restless because the big wigs from the power companies, general motors and the state bureaucracy were late. Wow! And to think I'd been partying with my friends the night before, making up verses to welcome them...So I sang "This Land Was Your Land", "There's a Time for You & Me", and then finished up with a parody of "Give Me that Ol' Time Religion" which introduced the major speakers for the polluters or enablers they were. What a glorious moment! And the crowd went wild...well, they did applaud. Happy Earth Day, everyone. |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: GUEST,ernest Date: 22 Apr 01 - 10:26 PM John McConnell, the founder of Earth Day, paid a visit to Mudcat last year in a thread about a song written by his father. http://www.mudcat.org/thread.CFM?threadID=589 http://www.earthsite.org/ his site |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Apr 01 - 09:47 AM Ah, the first Earth Day was in April of 1970! No wonder we were so suspicious that someone was trying to shift focus from the Vietnam War protests. |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: LR Mole Date: 23 Apr 01 - 11:26 AM I was in Boston, cutting high school. There was hope then, and we thought someone wold do something positive about this sad old stone. Now it seems the earth will outlast us all, without our help. Good going,Mama E. |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Mrrzy Date: 23 Apr 01 - 12:12 PM Mama E doesn't give any part of a rat's anatomy for humans. That's why I like her so much, I think... Let's have bacteria day! |
Subject: RE: Thought for Earth day 2001 From: Peg Date: 23 Apr 01 - 10:00 PM The earth might survive...but we won't unless we stop dumping shit into the oceans, poisoning the topsoil, and plundering a century's worth of resources (trees, minerals, oil, animals) every decade... |
