Step right up! Read all about it!

...Ok. So, we know who's on mp3.com, and I think it would be cool to list the NON-mp3.com mudcatter music sites. Who's on IUMA, vitaminic, efolkmusic, musicbuilder, lycos, avantnoise, wherever!

I'm thinking of making a page of mudcat music links for my website, too.

Please post your links. No mp3.com links, that's what the other thread is for. (And if you can't make blue clickies there are willing link fairies around, so just post the url.)

I hope you all enjoy this wonderful selection of mudcatter music.

~*sirepseh*~

PS: My sites other than mp3.com aren't up yet, but will be in a few days.

Good idea for a thread, Hes, and hopefully will show people here plces to share their music other than MP3.com, which seems to be screwing up royally.

May I suggest you post links (please)to "IUMA, vitaminic, efolkmusic, musicbuilder, lycos, avantnoise", etc? There may be some of us who would like to investigate the alternatives.

Not in any particular order:

www.iuma.com (Rules!)

www.vitaminic.com (Acquired iuma, but is itself not that great.)

www.efolkmusic.com (Not a bad little place.)

www.musicbuilder.com (Offers mp3 CDs as well.)

music.lycos.com (I think that's the addy. They aren't that great anyway.)

www.avantnoise.com (Rules! Also has mp3 CD capability.)

www.farmclub.com (Which is being merged with something, so don't put your stuff there.)

Unrated:

www.besonic.com

www.peoplesound.com

www.stationmp3.com

That's all that I know of so far.

Well, I just put a site on IUMA.

Took about ten minutes to do the same job that took mp3.com about 2 hours. Very impressed.

English Jon - Great!

Jande - yw. :D

I forgot one of the BEST sites out there. For bands with a webmaster, www.audiogalaxy.com/backstage will give you 50 MB of free space. You really need to know html for this, as there isn't an editor with it, you just upload stuff.

Check out their home page at www.audiogalaxy.com for an idea of what they offer.

I did a site for Between the Worlds there, and put up one free mp3, with all the other mp3 links going offsite. Have a look.

Hey Hes, That blue clicky took me to a page that said this:

"Want 25MB of free web space to host your band's site and serve your music? Sign up to create a new account."

Has it changed since you signed up? 25, not 50MB.

~ Jande

(25's still pretty good though!)

Didn't mean to make you blush. the way things are going with MP3.com, I get a knot in my stomach at the very idea of there possibly being anything good for musicians out there, other than the MudCat. I can't let myself believe it. I've started jumping at shadows.

I just figgered that they had changed the amount of space without telling anyone (like MP3.com does all the time), and you hadn't heard about it yet.

Anyway, thanks again for the links, but I don't think I want to micro-manage my life that way... I just don't have the time or energy for it and I'm fast losing the will to get on with it.

I'm thinking of removing my songs from the internet altogether. :`(

Jande... I remain as firmly convinced as ever that the internet CAN be a fabulous way to make music available to people. But it really looks like mp3.com ISN'T the right place for that.

I am getting a better connection next week, and I am planning some stuff. We WILL make good things happen, don't worry too much. :)

Well I went to IUMA and was about to set up a page with some of my tunes. Problem was, when I went to read the agreement it stipulated ORIGINAL material, and most of my stuff are tunes of others that I've adapted. Not wanting to get involved in potential copyright infringement problems, I am wondering, if there is a free web hosting site (something that doesn't require logons/passwords for visitors or sharing of songs with friends via passwords) that WILL accept MP3s (with no file size limitations on the MP3s) and that has at least 20 or megs of free storage...so that I can be added to Alice's and other linked lists here. (I will not deal with MP3.com or any site that "owns" your material.)I've tried Myspace, Freedrive, and a couple of others that suck, (i.m.o.)
If there's anything y'all can think of, send me a PM with your suggestions. It wouldn't kill me to have to pay for web space, but I don't really need to set up a web site, just storage space with a URL I can link the uploaded MP3s to, and users can just click on them and have a listen, if they're so inclined. (I can put up with banner advertising.) Thanks.

Well, a web site (free or not) would be the best way to deal with that, actually.

For that, I'd recommend homestead, all you would need to do is upload the files, then make a very basic page as your main page, that has links to all the files. You don't need to know html to use homestead, either. It is very easy. (Easy enough to be frustrating to someone who KNOWS html, lol!)

Still, the copyright issues could be a problem wherever you put it, even though you won't be getting paid for any of the files.

I've now set up a page on Homestead with a few of my recent solo recordings (as heard on Mudcat Radio).

You can go directly to the page here.
The link is also www.justapicker.homestead.com
Hesperis, please feel free to add this link to any compliation of Mudcatter recordings links w/thanks.

Great! I won't be able to download these for a while, but it's bookmarked.

One more suggestion for your site: homestead has a guestbook tool that you can put on your site... please use it. I think that mudcatters would love to sign and read it. I would!

Well, some some interesting stuff is on iuma and musicbuilder. Some mudcatters may recognize something. (Shhh! It's a secret! PM me if you know or guess...)

If anyone feels like doing a review, that would be great. You can add comments to the iuma page, or you can rate the songs on musicbuilder. Or, if you rrrreally like what you hear, you can go to the main site, and sign up for the mailing list.

Jon, that's great sounding stuff!

Don't take this the wrong way, but in the first few seconds of "Jacky Tar" I was confused. I said to myself, "that's not Jon anybody, that's Martin Carthy. Nobody else sings like that and plays like that!" The resemblance, is uncanny.

Keep puttin' em up.

ah shit, double post. DADGAD is easy, once you learn a few different ways to play the same chord. Playing tunes on it takes awhile to unlearn standard-tuning habits, but makes its own kind of sense.

Subject: RE: Mudcatters on mp3 sites!

It works really nicely, particularly in the Irish sets. Especially liked the jigs, you've actually given the tunes some space to breath, if that makes sense?

Don't know about standard tuning habits! - I've forgotten just about everything I ever knew about EADGBE. I've been using mostly CGCDGC, CGCDGA and occasionally CGCDGAflat and I still can't work out bloody DADGAD!!!

Anyway, I'm going to bunk off work early as there's nothing left to do today. Catch you tomorrow.

Cheers

EJ
