This is a sort of non-commercial plug. Arc Music (http://www.arcmusic.co.uk/) is a publisher of all sorts of world music CDs. They have some 300 titles.
It's almost impossible to get anyone to buy a recording of something that s/he is totally unfamiliar with. Arc has come up with a spectacular 10-CD "catalog"--it's a collection of 1-1/2 minute cuts (two from each album) totalling about seven hours of listening to music from such places as Africa, Tibet, Nepal, Bali, Australia, South Seas, American Indians, Near East Belly Dance, Salsa, Merengue, Steel drums, Klezmer, Gypsy music, Romanian panpipes, Andean flutes and even a good selection of real oddities like Celtic music, Irish and Scottish sing and bluegrass.
The whole catalog sells for $17 (US) or 10 pounds or 30 deutchmarks, including delivery. It's a great introduction to a tremendous variety of well-recorded music that's apt to unfamiliar to most of us.

(and, of course, if you find some titles you like, you can order them from Arc or--for a bit less money--from CAMSCO Music)

Much as I hate to refresh threads, I think that this is a worth-while deal.

As I remember this label, if I'm not mistaken, the covers to many of the CDs are terrible but a lot of the music itself is brilliant. (Don't judge a CD by its cover!)

Yeah, they do have some UGLY covers. (I've seen Kálmán Balogh up close... and he wasn't dressed like a Bavarian pimp.) I do think thet they are improving them, though; a couple of their new releases have covers that are almost appealing, in an 80s kind of way. Some of the recordings are as cheesy as the covers, but, like mcmoo said, there's plenty of really good ones, too. (Stay away from the Sakha folk music cd... Blows reindeer.) :)

MMario- There's no problem in ordering from Arc directly. If for some reason you don't want to, I could probably order you one, but Camsco isn't going to get any discounts--the price is already ridiculously low--and postage in the US would be $5.15 (a direct order includes postage).

Thanks from here too! I used to be able to find a magazine called "Songlines" in a local store & each issue had a sampler CD with a wide variety of world music on it. I think they only published twice a year or so. Haven't been able to find it lately - does anyone know if it is still available or have they ceased publication?

It seems to still be available according to THIS ARTICLE. Sorry it doesn't say where you can buy it, but there is an email addy. It sounds like a great magazine. Thanks!
