Cyril Tawney is appearing at the Yetties Music Night on weds the 2nd of May.
The venue is the West End Hall, Littlefield, Sherborne, Dorset.
Sorry it is short notice, but I have only found out about it myself.

We were lucky enough to see a couple of his intimate spots at the Lancaster Maritime Festival. Whether doing traditional material or his own songs, it's the sort of thing that will live you for ever. Go see him if you possibly can.

Damn,damn,damn. Of all the folkies I've never seen, Tawney is the one I most want to. But when I discovered (via Mudcat) that he was up the road in Leeds,I stopped looking out for his gigs, thinking I'd run into one sooner or later anyway.

If he's gone back south, I'm just going to have to get something organised, or one of us is going to be dead and I won't have seen him. Unfortunately May 2 is right out for me. Anyone know if he has any other dates coming up?

Cyril, to date, has not released a CD of himself (though he appears on several compilation albums). He does have eight cassettes, though. And they're all available from Camsco.

Cyril is an old friend - he moved from Leeds to Exeter last year and is still going around the Maritime Festivals as someone said he has loads of cassettes and a book the Grey Funnel Line ( the Chantey Cabin has them all - www.chanteycabin.com)

The update news is that these are currently being remastered for a Cd which will be released later this year

Hello Boab, Cyril is so often spoken of as a west-countryman because of his connections with Exeter and Plymouth, and the collecting he did in the area, but he was actually born and raised in Gosport, Hants, the source of his rich accent.

God you've plucked a name from the past. It brings back memories of my bed-sit days in London listening to Cyril Tawney and the "LOO SHANTYMEN" I believe they were called on the old Beeb Light. It must have been on Thursday evenings (when pecuniary disadvantage kept me solitarily a-bed - before payday). There was a programme of Shanties and For'bitters which was signed in by a rousing version of "Spanish Ladies" would'nt it be lovely to hear a similiar programme now? beachcomber (Still not having renewed his membership!)

The phrase "pecuniary disadvantage" reminds me. About twenty five years ago I received a request for a reference for one of my students, on a standard form used by Dublin Corporation (the local authority running the city). The last question always stuck in my mind:

Has the applicant, to your knowledge, ever suffered a pecuniary embarassment?"

I reckon the forms had survived since Irish independence in 1921!

I saw Cyril,It was a great night.
He is now living in Exeter at 10 Sivell Place,Heavitree, Exeter. EX2 5ET.
George, he seemed surprised wnen I gave him your best wishes.
As to gigs he does not do that many now but he si in the process of getting a web site up and running.

I have a CD of Cyril Tawney singing drinking songs called "Down the Hatch" that I bought in England about five years ago. I don't recall where I got it; maybe at the performer sales table when I saw him at the National Folk Festival.

Most of your queries will be answered by accessing Cyril's website www.folk-now.co.uk/cyril.tawney. Please change "Dorset" to "Devon" (place of residence) or "Hampshire" (birthplace). Not that we have anything against Dorset - a lovely county. We are well settled in Exeter and enjoying catching up with old friends and acquaintances. A CD is due in the summer from Peak Records (own songs), meanwhile details of cassettes are on the website.

At Chester Festival last weekend Cyril did a 1 hr "Cyril Tawney in Depth" which was a chat/lecture about his songs and how they came to be written etc etc. He sang half a dozen of the examples discussed at intervals through the talk finishing with a wonderfully full blooded "Sally Free and Easy".

To me the hour was what "Folk" is all about. Thanks Cyril.

I particularly enjoyed his Sammy's Bar at the Lancaster Maritime Festival. He did it with his own guitar accompaniment, of course. But he said that he originally composed it for the (English) concertina, which he was learning at the time but which he subsequently gave up.
