Subject: Mildred Maude and Mabel (Yale Song) From: Haruo Date: 29 Apr 01 - 06:47 PM I'm trying to recall a song I learned at Yale. The part I remember goes roughly thusly: Mildred, Maude and Mabel Were sitting at a table Working on a plan to Catch themselves a man to For twenty years and then some They'd been showin' men some But though they'd all had squeezes From lots of PhD'ses Hail, hail, hail to the boys down at Yale... etc. Who wrote it, when, etc. as well as the rest of the lyrics. Now, don't ask me why I'm trying to remember such a piece of tripe. I'm not sure I could come up with an excuse. But I know it was triggered by running into the Whiffenpoof Song in the Digitrad. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mildred Maude and Mabel (Yale Song) From: Charlie Baum Date: 22 Feb 06 - 02:46 PM Various websites seem to indicate that this song was passed down in the repertoire of various Yale small singing groups (e.g., the above link to the Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, and also sung by Whiffenpoofs and others), and also in the repertoires of equivalent groups at women's colleges such as Wellesley, Smith, and Mt. Holyoke. --Charlie Baum (TC '75) |

A complete (and easily understood version) can also be found at http://www.thetwentiethcenturyproject.com/Links.htm [and then click the bottom button]. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mildred Maude and Mabel (Yale Song) From: Haruo Date: 05 Jan 09 - 02:08 AM Thanks so much, Charlie! That's the very song. I just found a bunch of the lyrics embedded in a play here, too. Looks like maybe it's Maud (rather than Maude). Haruo |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mildred Maud and Mabel (Yale Song) From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Jul 11 - 05:44 PM We might as well copy it into the thread, don't you think? From the above-named play: Mildred, Maud and Mabel Were sitting at their table Down at the Taft Hotel Working on a plan to Catch themselves a man to Brighten up their lives a spell. In their thirty years of proms, Never once had they had qualms, That they could fail to satisfy their cravin' Nor ever seemed to doubt It's not reckless to hold out For a son of Old New Haven. And as they downed their pousse café The girls were heard to softly say....[There is surely more but the next page isn't viewable online.] |
Subject: Lyr Add: WE'RE SAVING OURSELVES FOR YALE From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Jul 11 - 06:07 PM Copied from a blog where the blogger says, "This is from an old Yale songbook in our piano bench." The posted version had several spelling errors, which is probably why we didn't find it before. I have attempted to correct them. WE'RE SAVING OURSELVES FOR YALE by David M. Lippincott, Yale '49 arr. Edwin l. Wolff, Yale '50 Mildred, Maud and Mabel Were sitting at their table Down at [the] Taft Hotel Working on a plan To catch themselves a man To brighten up their lives a spell. In their thirty years of proms Never once had they had qualms That they could fail to satisfy their cravin' Or even seem to doubt It's not reckless to hold out For a son of old New Haven. And as they downed their 'pousse cafe' The girls were heard to softly say: "Though we have had our chances For overnight romances With the Harvard and the Dartmouth male, And though we've had a bunch in Tow from Princeton Junction, We're saving ourselves for Yale. "For thirty years and then some We've been showing men some Tricks that made their motors fail; And though we've all had squeezes From lots of P H D-ses We're saving ourselves for Yale. Ho ho ho! Hail! Hail! Hail! Hail to the boys up at Yale! How we'd like to have one just to muss Some[one] who Gives his all for the blue, But would have enough left over for us, Ho ho ho! How we sigh for an old Eli, And let us add that we'd gladly die For what's in a sweater with a letter And when fin'lly married we lie, 'Twill be with an old Eli 'Cause we're saving ourselves FOR YALE! |
