Subject: RE: Help:Edinburgh,May,2001,sessions,clubs.. From: Stewart Date: 01 May 01 - 02:47 PM Thanks for the above information. I'm an intermediate fiddle player, not fast, but have at least a dozen tunes under my belt. I've not decided whether to take my fiddle along. How tolerant would they be? What are the most friendly sessions? I also sing unaccomp. and with guitar(if I could borrow one). After Edinburgh, my wife and I go to England for a few days to stay with friends in Hatfield (Herts.), and then to Ireland for a Mick Maloney Folklore tour. We will have a day on our own in Dingle, and at the end of the tour, a Sat and Sun in Dublin. Any advice on Ireland - sessions, pubs, etc.? S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Help:Edinburgh,May,2001,sessions,clubs.. From: GUEST,Haddington Folk Club Date: 02 May 01 - 02:26 PM You'd be welcomed at Haddington Folk club on Wednesday evenings from 9pm at Victoria Pub in Court Street. Small friendly club 20 miles east of Edinburgh on A1. Sessions. Singers and musicians - good crack usually. |
Subject: RE: Help:Edinburgh,May,2001,sessions,clubs.. From: GUEST,petr Date: 02 May 01 - 03:21 PM I was in Edinburgh 2 yrs ago. My fiddle playing friend took me to several sessions. There was one at Sandy Bells almost every night. Also at the Ensign Ewart on the Royal Mile I believe whistlebinkies was a another one although that may have changed. Get a gig guide when youre there. I found most of the sessions fairly welcoming. They usually let you start off a couple sets. Its like anywhere else, common sense. Also you can expect a lot of scottish tunes rather than Irish. Cheers Petr. Lovely town, check out Arthurs Seat. |
Subject: RE: Help:Edinburgh,May,2001,sessions,clubs.. From: Terry K Date: 03 May 01 - 01:39 PM OK here goes. The unmissable bit in your itinerary is the mega Mudcat gathering at the Jug - see the Yorkshire Gathering threads. It happens as you leave Edinburgh (18th, 19th, 20th) and will be WELL WORTH getting to if you can. I know it's difficult because I'm in Edinburgh myself the 16th, 17th and 18th and have also to get to Herts (10 miles from Hatfield) eventually cos I live there. In Dublin, everyone will quite rightly recommend Hughes's pub for genuine Irish music (not an Arran sweater in sight). They will make you very welcome. Cheers, Terry |

Subject: RE: Help:Edinburgh,May,2001,sessions,clubs.. From: Jock Morris Date: 03 May 01 - 04:51 PM If you're in Edinburgh on a Friday evening then the Castle Bar Cafe in Johnson Terrace (just down from the castle)has a wonderful session from 9pm till the wee sma'hours. If you're really unlucky then I'll be there myself:-) Scott |
