I really like Snake Baked a Hoecake and Going up on the Mountain. I'd like to get another Jody Stecher album, but can't really tell which one I'd like from the little samples (like at Amazon.com). So, Stecher fans, which ones are good? I kind of thought Blue Lightning sounded promising... Brad Sondahl http://pages.about.com/bsondahl

Brad, "Going Up on the Mountain" is my favorite of the ones I know, but I think "Blue Lightning" is lovely too. Gorgeous harmonies, and Kate Brislin takes the lead vocal on a few. You can't go wrong. Margaret

Hi Brad, all the albums (6) with his wife, Kate Brislin, are excellent but, if I were forced to choose, I would opt for 'Heart Songs', a superb album of Utah Phillips' songs. My other particular favourite is 'A Song That Will Linger'. If you want something a bit meatier, try Jody's 'Oh the Wind and Rain: Eleven Ballads' Appleseed CD 1030, but long ballads may not be to everyone's taste - it includes a 12-minute version of 'Barbary Ellen'.

Brad - I don't think it matters. You might as well get them all. Every Stecher-Brislin album I've heard has been terrific. I came across Stay Awhile at the library, and found that it had a terrific song called Fall on my Knees. The whole album is great, but that song alone is worth the cost of the CD.

I go with Stewie. I can't imagine Stecher and Brislin making a less than great album, but Heart Songs is the one I keep coming back to.

Peter.

I love the album he made with Krishna Bhatt. It went down a storm when taken into local curry houses round Keighley. Does he often do albums with people with the initials KB?

Who next Kate Bush?

I'll insert a shameless plug here for Jody's sister Janet Stecher, who is half of Rebel Voices (Susan Lewis Graham is the other half). They are of a different kind of "tradition" than Jody and Kate, concentrating on songs that have come out of the labor movement and the women's movement, but their harmonies (mostly a capella) are brilliant and their musicianship is impeccable. Runs in the family.

Aloha,
Mark

I recently managed to hear Oh, the Wind and the Rain! marvellous album, not a weak point on it. Apart from fascinating use of the oud (a favourite instrument of mine), I was amazed at how much his voice reminded me of Burl Ives.

A CD I like is Kate Brislin and Katy Moffat, "Sleepless Nights."

All the two ladies doing duets on old "brother harmony" country songs. Mostly Everly Bros. and Louvin Bros.

Jody doesn't sing, but he produced it and plays lead guitar and mando.

Peter.

Another vote for "A Song That Will Linger". Hard to find a better version of "Hard Times" or "Will You Miss Me?", the latter with some fine bass singing by a man named Hanks.

I would add The Driven Bow to that list. It is enjoyable to hear a guitar not beaten to death and actually accompanying the fiddle for once.

The Driven Bow is one of my favorite recordings as well. Jody's first pass on "The Lea Rig" is some of the best playing you'll hear anywhere. I had the chance to tell him that a few years back.

That bass is Larry Hanks, a magnificent singer and instrumentalist. Check out his album with Mike Marker.

They're all great.   I lean heavily toward close-harmony duets--have been called a harmony slut-- and Kate and Jody are just wonderful in duet. My favorites are probably:

A Song That Will Linger--especially a haunting "Shut Up In the Mines At Cold Creek", wistful "Red Rocking Chair", good solid Carter-family style " Orphan Child"--and an absolutely stunning "Lovers Return".

Our Town--just wonderful "Going To the West", exquisite close-harmony "Home" and "Too Late, Too Late", gently rocking and hypnotic "Our Town", and a solid traditional version of the old Christian Harmony "Twilight is Stealing".

Stay Awhile--sly "Seventeen Cents", great "Blue Mountain", and wonderfully spare "We Shall Meet Someday"

He and Kate do a great Carter Family tribute cd too - can't remember the title.

Just to add my voice to Jenny Bellamy.
Rasa (The LP with Krishna Bhatt) is probably in my top 20 all time greats.
Managed to see them in London in 197?? whilst on a tour organised (I think) by Martin Carthy. (Well, he was there anyway!)
Would love to see this re-issued, as my vinyl has long gone the way of all vinyl after extensive playing.

Just my two penn'orth. Ralphie

I saw that tour as well. 1980, as I recall. I saw them in Richmond. Noel Murphy and Hot Vultures also played that night along with a local resident singer, Jonathan Asprey, who was also excellent. Possibly the best night I ever spent in a folk club. A quid to you, squire.
