Tom Lewis has this song on "Mixed Cargo." In his notes he says it's an old Quaker song. I think he meant Gospel. I'll ask him!

Hey...Great...given e some good ideas.....for putting songs to this tune.....which I love from the Bob Pegg recording................the Gridley Tabernacle choir do the chours on "Gypsy' sublimely....it's moving like all really good chorus songs are that need wellie.......bit like Ode to Joy or Auld Lang Syne or.....you know ...your favourite 'drown in it ' chorus.......done at the right time in the right place.........x

I didn't know that putting old songs to the tune of All the Good Times was something of a sport in certain circles, until I read your post to this thread. So now I must tell you that one morning in the late nineties I woke up with The House of the Rising Sun going around in my head - but to the tune of Good Times. I liked it so much I recorded it in 2000 (with the able assistance of Paul Mills). We liked our arrangement so much, we titled the CD ALL THE GOOD TIMES. You can hear a snippet of the song at joannecrabtree.com, and of course I'd be happy to send you a hard copy.

For years, due to the need of a visiting singer to fit all the words into the line, I was convinced that the first line of the third verse was:

Forget all the teeth that's been rented to you!

Which seemed an unreasonable diatribe against denture recycling policy :) even if it was clear that the ill-fitting teeth were the cause of: (Forget) all the pains in your head.

I think this posting might more properly belong in the 'fun with mangled lyrics' thread but I thought I'd share it with you here.
My esteemed colleague Professor Parsons decided to transcribe the words of Bob Pegg's version of this song (from whence I don't know, but I have it on one of the Mr Fox albums).
Inexplicably he rendered the second line 'the hunter has hung up his horn' as 'the hunter has swallowed his horse' (!)
He remains unconvinced that he is mistaken on this

The hymn we used to sing that has almost this tune, was, "Lord, I'm Coming Home." It's an invitational song, sung at the end of the service when the invitation is given to the congregation to come up the aisle and join the church.

I've wandered from the fold of God,
Now I'm coming home;
The paths of sin too long I've trod-
Lord, I'm coming home.

Cho:
Coming home, coming home,
Nevermore to roam;
Open now thine arms of love,
Lord, I'm coming home!

"All the Good Times" was probably the most popular song going amongst the folk crowd in 1947 when I first arrived in NYC. Now there WAS a lively scene then, believe it or not!

According to Meade et al.'s Country Music Sources (p. 536), recordings before the early 1940s are:

Fred & Gertrude Gossett (recording date: 04/15/1930)
Steve Ledford & Buffalo Rodgers of the Carolina String Band (02/16/1932)
Monroe Brothers (08/03/1937)
Ozark Boys (01/21/1941)

Vance Randolph collected an incomplete 2-stanza version of "All Good Times Are Past and Gone", sung by Mr. Fred Painter, Galena, Mo., Sept. 27, 1941 (in Ozark Folksongs, Vol. IV, 1950, 1980, p. 305 [No. 792]).

Looking at web-sites with the Bill Monroe lyrics, they seem to be the older Gospel version. This is the one found in the DT. It is probably in the Public Domain. As yet, I haven't found any authorship information anywhere.

Does anyone have any information on the where the song first sprang up?

I already had the words of the traditonal/gospel song from which the chorus and tune are clearly derived. I actually remembered most of them anyway, but there were a few words which didn't sound right; perhaps I had an attack of "Mondegreens!" (see below), eg:

The meek and the weak shall inherit the earth
The savage and honest are dead"

"Honest" doesn't sound appropriate; "dishonest" would be bettter, though this is clearly not what "Mr. Fox" (ie Bob and Carolanne Pegg) were singing on the album. Reminds me of the saying by J. Paul Getty: "The meek shall inherit the earth - but not its mineral rights".

I also thought "You can't hunt me down through the forests of love" was something like "You can't hunt me down through the forester's blow" (ie of an axe") but it looks like I was wrong. Even the singers with the clearest diction are easy to mishear, hence the existence of "Mondegreens".

A Mondegreen, by the way, is a misheard song lyric and was coined by one Sylvia Wright, who on hearing the following words in the Scottish song The Bonnie Earl of Moray:

"They have slain the Earl of Moray
And laid him on the green"

thought it was:

"They have slain the Earl of Moray
And Lady Mondegreen"

There are at least a couple of websites devoted to Mondegreens; most of the one submitted are rather boring in my opinion. The most famous mondegreen, allegedly, is Jimi Hendrix's "Kiss this Guy" (ie Kiss the Sky) which even if the original is correctly pronounced, must be heard to distinguish from its alternative. Another is from Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" (The Ants are my Friends/The answer, my friends). I am sure we all make (if that is the right word) mondgreens; when I see the original lyrics of a song, I have seldom failed to see discrepancies between the actual words and what I thought they were.

Another bit of trivia useful if you take part in table quizzes: Who wrote the well-known song "The Floral Dance" (derived from the Helston Furry Dance, from Cornwall, England? Answer: Kate Moss (but as this was about 1900, it was obviously not the famous British supermodel who used to go out with Johnny Depp.

That's enough showing off in the guise of "Edukayshun". On a serious note (ie F sharp, ha ha) is there any way of contacting people via E-mail whose E-mail addresses do not appear in the list?

Does anyone out there know the lyrics to "All The Good Times"? This is the one by "Mr. Fox" (Bob and Carolanne Pegg from Yorkshire), not the traditional song of the same name, although clearly they borrowed some of the words off it. It was on a double album from about the 1970s, although I think this was originally 2 LPs, the 1st one called "Mr. Fox" and the second "The Gipsy". Other songs on it were: Mr. Fox, Elvira Madigan, Mendle, The Hanged Man, Join us in Our Game, etc.

We sometimes play a "ballad" game with this song. You can take the first quatrain (or any four-line verse, for that matter) of most classic (Child) ballads and use it as a verse for "All the Good Times are Past and Gone." It helps, of course, if your song circle is familiar with the sources. For instance:

In Scarlet Town, where I was born,
There was a fair maid dwellin'
Made ever youth cry "Well-a-day,"
And her name was Barbara Allen.

One day, one day, one holy day,
The very first day of the year,
The little Matthy Groves to the church did go,
Some holy words to hear.

Then you can switch to nursery rhymes like Old King Cole, or old autograph book quatrains, such as

Or some general trivia:
