Lyr Req: I Recall a Gypsy Woman (from Doc Watson)

My vinyl "Lonesome road" of Doc Watson got broken. I can't hear anymore "Gispy woman" and "Blue rail road train". It bothes me (ça m'emmerde).

I've been told by "LA FNAC" that this vinyl hadn't been record to a CD.

Any idea ?

Vanguard records has a release called "The Essential Doc Watson," it includes "Blue railroad train" but no "Gypsy Woman." Frank.

Thank's to Frank in the swamp. I'm running at LA FNAC to demand them "The Essentail of Doc Watson".

I've got and idea about "I recall a gipsy woman". Its feasibility depends on for hypothesis :

1 Some body has merci on me 2 The same body has the Lonesome Road vinyl, a sound card inside a internet-connected computer, with the suitable sofware. 3 This body connects the output of his vinyl board to the "line in" plug of his sound card. Then, "I reccal a gipsy woman" is sampled into a wawe file. 4 This file is attached to a message send to my e-mail.

If gipsy woman length 2'30", the size of the file would be 3.2 Mbytes (8 bit, 22 kHz, mono), about 30' of uploading at 2 kbyte per second. Blast it, that time is redhibitory.

I can think about a honest counter part to the one who would do that (I'm living in PARIS France, may be I could return a wave file of accordion by Yvette Horner, it is awfull to hear but quite typical french country music).

Just a hint:
If you compress the .wav file using WinZip or the like, you can cut the transmission time by about a third (probably).

Thank to Jon W. for for the hint. Thus the transfert time is reduced to 10'(2 kbytes/sec) or 20'(1 kbyte/sec).

Do some body have the vinyl ?

Who in america could be interested by Yvette Horner (or some equivalent high quality french - or european- cultural product) ?

Hey Gene and Remi and Frank; Does any of you have the WORDS to "I recall a gipsy woman" as performed by Doc Watson? I NEED to know. I collect gypsy-related folklore.

Also, Remi especially, when I was in France in the early '60s, I heard an American recording, no idea who the artist was, of a song called "The Pinball Machine." I would love to have all the words to it. It starts, "I'm an old hog hauler and I drive a big truck; I played the pinball machine till it brought me bad luck. All I ever got on the pinball machine, I got the four cat-e-corners, but I missed the sixteen." A trucker is so addicted to the pinball machine that his wife and kids die while he is playing pinball on the road... Thanks Pat

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the Don Williams version from 1973, on his first solo album, JMI 4004. The words are essentially as Gene transcribed the Doc Watson version, with only minor variations. The fact that it is credited to Jack Music, Inc. reinforces my opinion that this was the first recording of the song, since JMI was Jack Clement's company. I have not checked for sure, but later pressings may well have been on Dot, ABC/Dot, ABC, and/or MCA as a result of mergers, buyouts, etc.

To Pat : The indications are as follows : date : 60's name : "The pinball machine" Nationality : american object : truck driver addicted to pinball. miscellanous : heard in France.

The age of the subject makes the search uneasy. However, I would like to check before saying it's impossible to find it. The stores "LA FNAC" explain in there advertising that they able to find any song, with just a few hints. I can now submit them a good test.

To Dale Rose : If I understood, you mean that Don williams sang Allen Reynolds and Bob McDill in 1973. My thirst of knowledge is excited : I don't know anything about Don Williams, Allen Reynolds and Bob McDill.

Yes, Remi, Bob McDill especially has been one of the main writers for Don William over the years. I have seven Don Williams albums right here by the computer as I type this, and there are 18 Bob McDill songs on them. Only one of the albums has none at all. I actually have more than seven of his albums, that was just the number that I found easily.

To Dale Rose : I heard the voice of Don William singing "I recall a gipsy woman", thank you very much for this new world to explore.

There is an other song I like very much : "Passing Through" by Cisco Houston (my album is'nt broken). As I was a teenager, I enjoyed hearing the melody, without understanding. Finaly, thirty years later, I got the words and the meaning. I think that the "hints" he gave can work. Et puis, ma foi, la chanson est jolie !

To Pat: Today while working with the sheet music file, I ran across the song Just Like A Gypsy by Seymour B. Simons and Nora Bayes, copyright 1919 by Jerome H. Remick. If you are interested, I will transcribe the words when I get a chance. (It may be a while)
