Oh, jeez... I guess I have to display my ignorance here...what I have is in C - progression for the first part is C, G/B, Am7, D/B - F.Mac plays it capoed up 3, I believe - if I take the capo up to about 7th fret I get in the neighborhood...... I think that I need to get it to the key of G. In trying to transpose to G, D, Em7... it just doesn't sound right and I lose that wonderful bass pattern in the original...

Help, I dont think I know what I'm doing here....

Thanks!

I do this one in DADGAD and it works very well in that tuning.

Just let me get home and I'll try and transcribe it for you if that's any help.

Hmmm... Pene Azul's blueclickey Tab sez it's in E-flat, so you'd have to capo on the 4th fret to get it in the key of G, but again you'd lose that bass run. Can you tell us the individual notes of the bass run that you want to play? Perhaps then we can suggest other alternate tunings that might do the trick.

Speaking of tricks, one way to capo AND preserve your lower bass notes on the guitar is to use a Keyser capo to cover ONLY the first 5 strings, leaving the 6th string open (then tune that string as needed). There are also capos that are designed to accomplish the same thing (cover some but not all strings).

Lane: Can you stand to sing it in the key of A? That's the key I have transposed it to, for my own performing, and that allows for a nice, low E - F# - G# - A bass run. If you like, I'll post my chords for ya.

Sharon,

Yeah... key of A could work... I'll also play with the 5 fret capo idea - intersting.... And Mooman, I would appreciate the DADGADC tab, when you can.

Thanks all! L

From: SharonA

Okay, key of A it is. One problem: there's one chord whose name I do not know, so in the Tab below I will call it "E??" and then describe the fingering of the chord afterward (and hope that some kind 'catter will provide the proper name!). Also, I don't know how to do all that fancy html stuff, so I will place lyrics (as I recall them... probably faultily) in parentheses after the chords. With the syncopation in the lyrics, this should be velly intellesting... but all chords are played on downbeats.

----------------

A (took my) E (love, took it down) E?? E
A (climbed a) E (mountain and I turned around) E?? E
(and I) A (saw my re-) E (-flection in the) E?? (snow-covered) E (hills)
(where the) A (landslide) E (bring it) E?? (down) E

(oh) A (mirror in the) E (sky, what is) E?? (love) E
(can the) A (child within my) E (heart rise a-) E? (-bove) E
(can I) A (sail through the) E (changin') E?? (ocean tides) E
(can I) A (handle the) E (seasons) E?? (of my life) E
A E (I don't) E?? (know) E
A E E??? B7th

(well I've) E (been a-) B (-fraid of chan-) C#minor (ges) C#minor again
('cause I) A (built my) E(life around you) E?? B7th
E (time makes you bol-) B (-der; even) C#minor (children get) C#minor again (older)
(and I'm) A (gettin' ol-) E (-der too) E?? E
A E E?? E

(repeat chords of bridge with minor changes to lyric)

(repeat chords of first verse with minor changes to lyric)

----------------

Well, THAT was confusing! Here are the chords without the lyrics:

A E E?? E
A E E?? E
A E E?? E
A E E?? E

A E E?? E
A E E?? E
A E E?? E
A E E?? E
A E E?? B7th

(bridge:)
E B C#minor C#minor again
A E E?? B7th
E B C#minor C#minor again
A E E?? E
(repeat chords of bridge, then repeat chords of first verse)

Now, about that pesky "E??" chord: Here's the fingering...
1st finger, 3rd string (G string), 2nd fret. Note=A
2nd finger, 5th string (A string), 4th fret. Note=C#
3rd finger, 4th string (D string), 4th fret. Note=F#
(what IS that chord called?)

Hoping this helps,
SharonA

I've been using open tunings,(D drop is my favorite) for awhile doing slide work, but alot of folkies use open tunings while making simple chords sound wonderful. ala Arlo. I've always been fascinated with this beautiful variation and always wanted to learn,... so maybe this time I'll get enough information, in a format that I can understand, so I can make something pretty come out of my guitar so I won't get bored and return to the so called "traditional parameters", that I've been using since I was seven! So chin up old boy! we'll either get our information here or somewhere else, but one day I'll learn how to do that Voodoo that they do sooooo well. Remember: There is nothing to fear, but fear itself! well that and making noise on your guitar that really sucks! Thats why ya go off by yourself to practice. *Peace* ~B~

Well....your are far braver than me, Biskit... I, too, have used the standard tuning since day one.... and, well.. I dont know that I can tread into the unknown... do you know of any resources for instruction on open tunings? I do love the sound, but, well... you have to put your fingers somewhere else and I'm baffled by that... but then I do baffle eaisly...

Dear Lane and Biskit,

I almost mostly use open tunings these days, though revert to standard for the odd blues and jazz style number. I particularly use DADGAD and have found, with a bit of patience, it is useful and effective in a variety of styles.

I hope to find time to work on Landslide (which I have done in DADGAD although never wrote the tabs down) in the coming week and hopefully post up the tabs with the fingerings/chords I use (and which you may well be able to introduce your own variations or improvements on).

All the best

mooman

Lane: I will post up a couple of resources I have on DADGAD (but not on this computer) when I get home and access the favourites on another one I use.

There's a back issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine with a great article on altrenate tunings. Unfortunately, I don't remember offhand which issue it was, but contact the magazine and I'm sure they'll help you find it and order the back issue.

Also, don't forget to do a Mudcat Forum search with keywords such as "Alternate Tuning". If I knew how to make a blueclickeything, I'd stick some here for reference to some of the threads listed (but there are a bunch of them; I saw 'em!)

there have been several threads on "Alternate Tunings" in the past few years but never any mention of what to do with your guitar once you've tuned it like that. I imagine if you do a forum search you'll come up with a few at least.~B~

"...what to do with your guitar once you've tuned it like that"? You mean, besides playing around with it to see what sounds good to you, like you do when you're in standard tuning?

Well, there are books and booklets with chord charts for various alternate tunings; check your local music store or bookstore, or search the music-book sites and order a reference book. If you have a friend who plays in alternate tunings, ask him/her to show you some stuff or point you toward some resources. If you see a performer playing in alternate tunings, watch the fingers for chord patterns, and bend his/her ear after the show to learn more.

Basically, do the same stuff you did when you learned how to play in standard tuning!

Dear Lane and Biskit,

Here are a few links as promised to help with some practical information on your exciting new journey to DADGAD. Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it might seem and the results will sound very good!

Blue clicky 1

Blue clicky 2

Blue clicky 3

Blue clicky 4

Blue clicky 5

I hope this provides some initial inspiration. I will try to work on the transcription of Landslide this weekend if varied crises, family, musical commitments and residual energy levels permit.

All the very best

Biskit: I misspoke myself; sorry. I meant to suggest asking friends in real-time with guitars in hand, who can show you what it is they do with their fingers, and with whom you can follow along. These friends might also have resources (books, charts) that they can pull from their real-time shelves and lend to you. That's what I meant!
