Subject: If You Could Only Take 1 Memory?
From: Justa Picker

Watched an interesting movie last night called "Afterlife" (Japanese with subtitles). The concept of the movie, was that angels assist the newly deceased who arrive and spend 1 week in a compound, each with their own room, before "moving on".

During the week, each "guest" is told that they are only allowed to take (1) memory from their lifetime with them. And that all the key moments of their lives would be video taped, and they could watch the tapes if need be, to help them choose, and they had one week to decide. The movie excluded the idea of there being a "hell".

Some of the selections were interesting. Those that had led a bad life, didn't want to take any memories with them at all; one man wanted to take the memory of making love with a woman; another person wanted the memory of the security of being in his mother's womb; another woman wanted to take the memory of giving birth; and on it went.

It got me to thinking of what that (1) memory would be for me? (I'm still thinking about it as one memory is a pretty tough decision. Would I want to take my musical abilities? or a memory from childhood? or the birth of my first child?, etc.)

What about you?

..this one's easy for me but it makes me cry, too. I would take the memory of standing next to my son, almost anywhere actually: on the stage singing Santy Ano together, walking down the path next to the Santa Fe river, walking through a parking lot to go to the movies, walking out of the bowling alley with his third place City Tournament medal around his neck! I always feel safe with him, a feeling that has otherwise eluded me most of my adult life...

That's a tough one. As i watch my mother in law dying, i am really wondering what memories she is taking.

I'll keep it to music memories...but the first time I saw a student (someone I taught right from their first D chord) release their first CD and do their first big concert. I was quietly thrilled, and in many ways it erased some rather unpleasant childhood memories.

Well, I was going to say, the first time I "met" Jesus, but then I realized that I could choose the memory of that last moment of life when my whole life flashes before my eyes-- I'll take that one! *G*

I figure on taking all of them. I believe that's how it works. Picking just one would be almost impossible, and probably a bit arbitrary at this point.

Some of you have entirely missed the point of this thread.

If, you were one of the people in the movie I've described (the semantic term is called 'suspending disbelief') and were only allowed ONE memory from your life to take with you --to the next level....

(...maybe I should stick to music thread creations... ----running and ducking for cover----:-)

I didn't miss the point, just couldn't be bothered adhering to it...

But if you insist...um...let's see...

Okay, I'd go for the memory of when I was very young, out in nature, enjoying the sunshine and the beauty of all the plants and wild things around me...and utterly unaware yet that there was anything painful or hurtful in life whatsoever.

Good enough?

That's a tough one, Justa. Can't pick just one child's birth, as there were three. While there are several deep-soul lovemaking times, I think I'd have to say the first time Rog and I went out on a date and wound up at my house, on the couch, talking about all manner of incredibly "deep" issues until dawn hit the sky and we realised we'd not sleep a wink and still had our clothes on!

First time I'd ever experienced that. I have a rather irreverent term for it now, "mind-fucking", and I still find THAT a much bigger turn-on, with more depth (if you'll pardon the unintentional pun) than the actual sex, anyday!

Kat, I think of mind-fucking as something else entirely, but for what you describe I call it Making Sense. When two people Make Sense together it can be..... mmmm!

JP, I think you should expect most Mudcatters to bust paradigms on you. Nature of the beast. Not many here willing to stay in even the biggest envelope-- push it hard enought to bust out most every time!

From my childhood: We were on vacation at a cabin in the Catskills. Hurricane Connie had just hit; Donna was on its way and we packed and left. As we drove down the mountain road, the stream was overflowing - I had never seen it more than a few inches deep. And on the side of the rode was a single flower bravely holding itself up against the wind and rain. Years later I realized it was Queen Anne's Lace. That flower's calm determination to hang on has stuck with me through my life. That's the memory I plan to keep with me forever.

Amergin - Very probably so. Most of the spiritual material I have read suggests that linear time is an illusion anyway, and that life in spirit is timeless...so the chances are they've always known one another and are simply rediscovering it once again...

Now Spaw will probably post here and ask where he can get that stuff you and I are smoking. :-)

Yeah, Amergin, we did. No mystery there...he and the other "Rog", I met on the same day, and I had all known each other before. I think that is one way in which soulmates recognise one another.

Being driven along the motorway, by a very special person, on a hot summers day, with all the windows and sunroof open, with the anticipation of the weekend to come...

not a fair problem...but, if I MUST suspend disbelief, then the only possible answer is too personal for a forum such as this...

if I can leave out people, then there was this time driving thru the Flint Hills of Kansas toward Wichita, and looking out into the distance over a vast area at an amazing lightning storm/display just after dusk...dark clouds, bolts of lightning everywhere, remnanants of color from the sunset...awesome, powerful, beautiful, terrifying,...like being an observer at creation, yet not directly involved. Hadn't thought of it for years...

My memory would have to be of my Tree.

Harpgirl, your Santy Ano memory is just precious, I have a similar one with my Rachael singing Plastic Flower Seeds but I still have to remember my Tree.

Bert.

I'd have to say that the memory I want to take with me is one that I am still creating. The Great Spirit is still speaking to me and guiding me and molding me into the warrior I am yet to be. The PROCESS of it all is the memory I want to save.

Well...about 9:A.M. on a summer morning. Clear blue sky, big Atlantic off to the left, one bare foot warm on the asphalt of the road, the other cool on the middle white stripe. Realizing that I was always alone, and never alone. And am, still.

Mine is similar to KingBrilliant's- I'm standing alone on a hillside above an orchard in the middle of the day, experiencing a total solar eclipse. Overhead in a dark-blotched sky a dozen airplanes are droning in circles. As the day darkens into night, surprised birds swoop past me into bushes and trees. From nowhere a stiff chill breeze prickles my scalp and lifts my hair from my shoulders. I guard myself against an elemental fear, almost panic, reminding myself that it is passing...

After it is all over, I fully understand the power a priest or witch or shaman would have over his or her community.

This is a memory that I would not choose to forget nor would I be able to.

Ah, C. Charlie, that's a GOOD one! How could I not think of the times my horse let me soak her mane with my tears, or my lovecat, Sasheen, who used to wash my forehead, or Trystan, another lovecat who put me to sleep, lying on my chest, purring when I was sick and had to sleep in a chair, sitting up? No way can I ever pick just one of those!

Another moment...the instant I knew my mother had died...it was good in a way because despite the physical distance, I was in meditation and was there with her. Saw her family (all but two sisters, deceased) greet her and enfold her in their loving arms. Unforgettable and comforting.

For me, James Hunt says it best:

Jenny kissed me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in:
Time, you thief! who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in.
Say I'm weary, say I'm sad;
Say that health and wealth have miss'd me:
Say I'm growing old, but add-
Jenny kissed me.

Okay, so "her" name wasn't Jenny..That doesn't change the memory.
