The thread of "where in the world is Spancil Hill" made me think of my time on an Aer Lingus jet at Shannon waiting to take off for Dublin. I was sitting next to a huge lady who wore that really bad cologne like grandma used to wear (puts it on with a Wagner power sprayer). Anyway, she begins to tell me of her "expertise" about things Irish. On and on, for about fifteen minutes she went. As the plane taxied onto the active runway, there were small purple tufts of clover growing around the edge of the tarmac. She grabbed me by the shoulder and literally shouted "LOOK!!! The FIELDS OF ATHENRY. You know, it grows wild all over Ireland".

What experts have you come across?

LOL!!! We have a lot of fun, here in Wyoming, with coming across as experts about the JACKALOPE.

I thought that Athenry was more like Brussels sprouts. Something on the order of a grain crop common to the hills of Central Greece. . .

By the way - here in Florida we've been telling people for years that alligators are dangerous - That's wrong - it's the manatees that are mankillers.

A woman once told me - very emphatically - that Ornette Coleman invented muzak.

When I told her this was extremely unlikely, she told me she was absolutely sure, and maybe there were 2 saxophone-playing Ornette Colemans.

I'm surprised that she could see all that there athenry from the plane as it taxied, since it is well known that "low lie the fields of Athenry." Perhaps she had an unusually high level of visual acuity.

I always thought it was where Lynyrd Skynyrd got the inspiration for "Free Bird"...

Actually, the inspiration for "Free Bird" was the death of Duane Allman at age 25.

Tom D. is absolutely correct. We were on the high end of the East-West runway at Shannon so we were able to see the "lo lying" fields of Athenry. And full marks to Blackcatter for the observation of Athenry as a grain crop. We all know that it is a grain that can actually be distilled into whisky. That's why there are so many fields of the stuff. And finally, since the Shannon airport is on the estuary of the river, we now know why "once we watched the small sea birds fly". You see, seagulls and puffins LOVE Athenry. It's the steady diet of these creatures.

Personally, I'd love to see Ireland make a cereal of this stuff.

Great connections Bob, but I think that Puffins eat fish and grains.

And gee - I haven't had a shot of rye whiskey in years.

I wonder why the fields of Athenry are lying low - maybe they were wanted by the law in connection with an attempt to feed the starving masses?

Oops - should be "fish & NOT grains."

And I went out to have a shot of rye and can't find one the three local bars I'm willing to visit. Oh well.
