I hope he sees this thread and posts the name of it here. I didn't see it in the DT, either, at least not searching with "cider" and/or "cider mill."

Johnny Coppin composed many songs based on Laurie Lee and his writings.
try looking for his record/CD's "I think he called the Laurie Lee one "the Edge of Day"
I went to a play written by him about Ivor Gurney & remember a song about "easing the vent" which was a barrel of cider I think.
Paul Burgess was in it and he has taken over from Johnny on the Radio Gloucester folk prog, Sat eve I think.
I will bump into Paul soon so can ask.
Johnny's wife is very ill and on a second round of chemo so he may be preoccupied right now.

There is a vague recollection of an older English song with part of the chorus "sipping cider through a str-oh-aw Adge Cutler and the Wurzels did "Drink up the Cider". "Fathom the Bowl" mentions cider in one verse. JohnB

The song I believe Kat is referring to isn't about cider. It's about making sorghum syrup by feeding cane into a press and squeezing the juice out by having a horse or a mule walk around and around a large circle area. The juice is boiled down in a large iron pot until the syrup is done. The song is called "By And By" (mis-spelled by me on my 1998 CD as "Bye And Bye".)

Charley Noble ; Dickens Cider is a wav file that was emailed to me. It goes for 90 seconds or so and is very funny. I don't know if there is a real Dickens Cider from Maine but this is a play on words, dick-in-side-her. With lyrics like, I make sure I have a Dickens Cider every day, and, My wife doesn't let me go a day without a Dickens Cider, it makes one think that if there is such a brew it would outsell Viagra.

There's a tune for that limerick. I've sung it as a round. Gimme a day or two and maybe I can write it out.
There's also a verse of some Wassail, Somerset? that goes "bud and blossom, bud and blossom, bud and bloom and bear/So we shall have apples and cider all next year/ Apples all in bushel baskets, boxes, bags, and all/ And the cider running out of every gutter hole."
DT calls it " Here We Come a-Wassailing" and it's right here.

Allan C, that is the first line of 'Red Rocking Chair', a song that has only that incidental mention of cider. The Hickory Wind album was 'Fresh Produce'. I don't think it has made it to CD - however, I recall seeing somewhere on the Net that something by Hickory Wind has been reissued on CD, possibly their 'At the Wednesday Night Waltz' that was on Adelphi. Fine group they were.

Check out "In Old Pod Auger Times" in the DT. I can't seem to get to it tonight to make sure of the reference, but the version we sing, which was collected by Helen Hartness Flanders in Vermont, refers to cider in the final verse.

It's on an LP we made donkey's years ago which is now available only as a custom cassette from Folk-Legacy. (We, by the way, refers to me and my wife Caroline.)

Not actualy about cider but the song that jumped to my mind has the lines 'We're all up from Somerset (Pronounced zumerzet) where the cider (pr. zider) apples grow.' in the chorus. If I remember rightly it's poking fun at the establisment and royalty in a nice sort of way. But my memory is sort of errm, thingy, nowadays.

By the way, the Crocketts' "Hard Cider Song," linked above, IS "Sweet Cider Time When You Were Mine." They retitled the record to avoid copyright restrictions.

"Red Apple Juice" is a song originally, I think, introduced to the folk repertoire by North Carolina lawyer-banjo picker Bascom Lamar Lunsford back in the 1920s or 1930s. He probably picked it up while selling apple seedlings through the mountains, appropriately. Charlie Monroe later did a great version, which I believe is the source for the standard "Red Rocking Chair" mentioned above.

Ain't got no use for your red apple juice,
Ain't got no honey baby now, Lord, Lord,
Ain't got no sugar baby now.

And I ain't got a care for your red rocking chair … etc.
