Subject: songs about cider From: GUEST,joan Date: 13 May 01 - 09:43 PM I'm looking for songs about (apple) cider, either hard or sweet. Songs about drinking cider would be fine, but about making cider would be even better. Does anyone know of any? Thanks. Joan |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Stewie Date: 13 May 01 - 10:04 PM On second thoughts, that stuff will probably give you the DTs. If you put the word 'cider' (without quote marks) in the Digitrad and Forum Search box on the main forum page, you will have numerous 'hits' in the DT and the forum. Cheers, Stewie. |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: katlaughing Date: 13 May 01 - 11:21 PM Art Thieme has a great one on one of his tapes, for the life of me I cannot remember the name nor find it in the threads, and I know I talked about it in one of them. I hope he sees this thread and posts the name of it here. I didn't see it in the DT, either, at least not searching with "cider" and/or "cider mill." |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Bert Date: 14 May 01 - 03:02 AM Of course, you could always go to the Digitrad Lyrics Search, above and key in cider, you'll find many hits. |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,Mr Red@Library Date: 14 May 01 - 10:10 AM There is one written by Ted Amphlett - never met the guy but 'tis sung in Worcestershire occasionally laconic humour would best describe it "My native roots are cankered, all along Evesham's green Vale" then there is the line about the cider houses... "at various adresses that nobody talks about!" I did have the words once but lost them. I do know a man who sings them and might bump into him If & when I will post here hten there is the incantation for the "Bush burning" ceremony that Dave Jones used to do on New Years Eve in his orchard at Putley I have his widows e-mail so will try to get that Westons Cider in Much Marcle might be able to help. and the cider museum in Hereford should have a few Long Live Cider. Long Live My Brain tick one of the above |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,Mr Red again Date: 14 May 01 - 10:21 AM Johnny Coppin composed many songs based on Laurie Lee and his writings. try looking for his record/CD's "I think he called the Laurie Lee one "the Edge of Day" I went to a play written by him about Ivor Gurney & remember a song about "easing the vent" which was a barrel of cider I think. Paul Burgess was in it and he has taken over from Johnny on the Radio Gloucester folk prog, Sat eve I think. I will bump into Paul soon so can ask. Johnny's wife is very ill and on a second round of chemo so he may be preoccupied right now. |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Art Thieme Date: 14 May 01 - 09:28 PM The song I believe Kat is referring to isn't about cider. It's about making sorghum syrup by feeding cane into a press and squeezing the juice out by having a horse or a mule walk around and around a large circle area. The juice is boiled down in a large iron pot until the syrup is done. The song is called "By And By" (mis-spelled by me on my 1998 CD as "Bye And Bye".) Whatever. Sorry! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: katlaughing Date: 14 May 01 - 10:08 PM Oh, shoot! Thanks, anyway, Art. Sorry for the CRS! |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: John P Date: 15 May 01 - 09:19 AM There is a Breton song called "Son ar chistr", which I'm told means "Song of Cider". I could dig up the lyrics if you have any use for non-English songs. John Peekstok |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Charley Noble Date: 15 May 01 - 09:43 AM Then there's the "Apple Picking Song" whose chorus runs "Hey, ho, feel so fine, Looking out across the orchard in the bright sunshine; Hey, ho, feel so free, Sitting in the top of an apple tree." Reminds me of that arcane discussion of how animals were loaded into Noah's Arc – you, know the one that states that all the animals came in pairs, all 'cept the worms who came in apples... |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,John Gray / Australia Date: 15 May 01 - 11:08 AM Charley Noble ; Dickens Cider is a wav file that was emailed to me. It goes for 90 seconds or so and is very funny. I don't know if there is a real Dickens Cider from Maine but this is a play on words, dick-in-side-her. With lyrics like, I make sure I have a Dickens Cider every day, and, My wife doesn't let me go a day without a Dickens Cider, it makes one think that if there is such a brew it would outsell Viagra. JG / F.M.E. |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,Karen Date: 15 May 01 - 11:17 AM Following on John P.'s note, there's a cider drinking song on Chieftains' Celtic Wedding CD called "Ev Chistr 'Ta Laou!". Is that the one you meant, John? |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Barbara Date: 18 May 01 - 01:10 AM There's a tune for that limerick. I've sung it as a round. Gimme a day or two and maybe I can write it out. There's also a verse of some Wassail, Somerset? that goes "bud and blossom, bud and blossom, bud and bloom and bear/So we shall have apples and cider all next year/ Apples all in bushel baskets, boxes, bags, and all/ And the cider running out of every gutter hole." DT calls it " Here We Come a-Wassailing" and it's right here. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Mr Red Date: 19 May 01 - 06:48 PM I saw the tape by Johnny Coppin yesterday - Edge of Day. Side 2 "First Taste of Cider" and it was inspired by "Cider with Rosie" by Laurie Lee. Hope it helps |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Allan C. Date: 19 May 01 - 07:38 PM "Well I ain't got no use for your Red Apple Juice..." is the opening line of a song called Red Apple Juice. I do not know of a source that is still "in print" for this song. It appeared on an album by a group called Hickory Wind on the Flying Fish label. I have been looking everywhere to find a copy. |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Stewie Date: 20 May 01 - 08:24 PM Allan C, that is the first line of 'Red Rocking Chair', a song that has only that incidental mention of cider. The Hickory Wind album was 'Fresh Produce'. I don't think it has made it to CD - however, I recall seeing somewhere on the Net that something by Hickory Wind has been reissued on CD, possibly their 'At the Wednesday Night Waltz' that was on Adelphi. Fine group they were. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Stewie Date: 20 May 01 - 08:45 PM Allan C, I found the CD that I mentioned in previous posting - it is a compilation of stuff from 70s called 'Lafayette's Retreat'. There is no track listing, but an email address for seeking info. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Sandy Paton Date: 21 May 01 - 12:48 AM Check out "In Old Pod Auger Times" in the DT. I can't seem to get to it tonight to make sure of the reference, but the version we sing, which was collected by Helen Hartness Flanders in Vermont, refers to cider in the final verse. Folks didn't have delirium tremens Nor perpetrate horrible crimes, For the cider was good and the rum was pure In old pod auger times. It's on an LP we made donkey's years ago which is now available only as a custom cassette from Folk-Legacy. (We, by the way, refers to me and my wife Caroline.) Sandy |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Dave the Gnome Date: 21 May 01 - 05:05 AM Not actualy about cider but the song that jumped to my mind has the lines 'We're all up from Somerset (Pronounced zumerzet) where the cider (pr. zider) apples grow.' in the chorus. If I remember rightly it's poking fun at the establisment and royalty in a nice sort of way. But my memory is sort of errm, thingy, nowadays. Dave the Whatsit (Probably too much cider....) |
Subject: Lyr Add: EVESHAM CIDER From: Mr Red Date: 31 May 01 - 03:13 PM EVESHAM CIDER (presumed Title)
My native roots are cankered along the Avon Vale
Unspeakable carouses that fill our hearts with shame
But in spite of church and chapel ungodly folk there be
But if my time suffices until my days are done
words written by Ted Amphlett
If you give me an e-mail address (via 'Cat personal messages) I might be able to put one verse into .MP3 format. I don't guarrantee that the folk process doesn't add to the tune! |

Subject: LyrAdd: Up Fron Somerset From: Nigel Parsons Date: 05 May 05 - 01:35 PM UP FROM SOMERSET Words Fred E Weatherly, Music Wilfrid Sanderson Oh, we came up from Somerset To see the Great Review, There was Mary drest in her Sunday best And our boy Billee too. The drums were rolling rub-a.dub, The trumpets tootled too, When right up rode His Majesty, An' says "An' who be you?" "Oh we'm come up from Somerset, Where the cider apples grow, We'm come to see your Majesty An' how the world-do go. An' when you're wanting anyone, If you'll kindly let us know, We'll all come up from Somerset, Because we loves you so ?" Then the Queen she looked at Mary, "An' what's your name?" she said, But Mary blushed like any rose, An' hung her pretty head. So I ups an' nudges Mary, "Speak up an' tell her, do!" So she said "If you please your Majesty, My name is Mary too!" "An' we'm come up from Somerset, Where the cider apples grow, Where the gals can hem an' sew an' stitch, And also reap and hoe. An' if you're wantin' any gals An' will kindly let us know, We'll all come up from Somerset, Because we loves you so!" Then the King looked down at Billee-boy, Before they rode away; An' what is he going for to be?" His Majesty did say. So Billee pulled his forelock, An' stood up trim and true, "Oh I'm going to be a soldier, Sir, For I wants to fight for you !" "For we'm come up from Somerset, Where the cider apples grow, For we're all King's men in Somerset, As they were long, long ago. An' when you're wanting soger boys, An' there's fighting for to do, You just send word to Somerset An' we'll all be up for you !" Subject: RE: songs about cider From: Jim I Date: 12 Jun 07 - 03:31 PM Not specifically about cider but there are the occasional references Twice Daily Now when Oi were a lad, Oi were so glad To go out in the hay-time With me fork an' a bottle an' a cork In the good old zummer day time And then one day amongst the hay I met young Lucy Bailey I said, "My dear, d'you oft come here?" And she said, "Yes, sir, twice daily." We had such fun in the summer sun. Lucy were so thrillin'. Sweet and pure, but Oi weren't sure That young maid were willin' Till one day among the hay We was workin' gaily, She ups an' zlips, an' zummat rips An' Oi went there twice daily. She said, "Oh! dear, Oi do feel queer. Think Oi ought to tell 'ee. 'Taint new bread," she sadly said, "The swellin' of me belly. Oughter go To Doctor Joe." Off she went so gaily. He gave 'er a dollop of gurt thick jollop. And said, "Take this twice daily." Now Lucy's dad were very mad, Chased Oi round the hay mow, 'E said, "My son, You've 'ad your fun. The time has come to pay now. My girl you'll wed," the old man said As he waved his shotgun gaily. "If you don't," he said, "Oi'll put some lead Where you won't go twice daily." Well, the very next day, in the month of May, We held the ceremony, Paid off the vicar with a gallon of liquor, Rode to church on a pony And the village folks for miles around Waved and shouted gaily, But there's no doubt, you'll get found out If you go there twice daily. Now, to Lucy's joy, she had a boy. What a little darlin', Round and fat as a Cheshire cat, Perky as a starlin'. Skin were smooth as a cider jar And they called him Buster Bailey, Fed un on swedes an' charlock weeds An' a pint of scrump twice daily. Now we'm old, our story's told, Been forty years together An' we often stray where we tossed the hay In that old-time summer weather. Kids, we got, full ten or more. We goes on quite gaily. Though Oi'm old an' grey, When Oi gets me way Oi still goes there twice daily. |

Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 13 Jun 07 - 07:59 AM By the way, the Crocketts' "Hard Cider Song," linked above, IS "Sweet Cider Time When You Were Mine." They retitled the record to avoid copyright restrictions. "Red Apple Juice" is a song originally, I think, introduced to the folk repertoire by North Carolina lawyer-banjo picker Bascom Lamar Lunsford back in the 1920s or 1930s. He probably picked it up while selling apple seedlings through the mountains, appropriately. Charlie Monroe later did a great version, which I believe is the source for the standard "Red Rocking Chair" mentioned above. Ain't got no use for your red apple juice, Ain't got no honey baby now, Lord, Lord, Ain't got no sugar baby now. And I ain't got a care for your red rocking chair … etc. "Sal's Gone to the Cider Mill" – another one by Riley Puckett You may also wish to google these lyrics, found on the net: "Cider Woman" by Man's Ruin – great gonzo lyrics "Woozy with Cider" – James Yorkston "Apple Sugar Cider" – Facing New York "I Am a Cider Drinker" – Wurzels "Cider" – Chaos UK "Apple Cider Reconstitution" – Rod Stewart "Cider Man" – Dirty Bird "Drink Cider From a Lemon" – Feeder |
Subject: RE: songs about cider From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 13 Jun 07 - 08:00 AM Try this chestnut with your cider -- from http://historywired.si.edu/detail.cfm?ID=381 "The Harrison Yankee Doodle," William Henry Harrison campaign song "The Harrison Yankee Doodle" from the recording entitled Presidential Campaign Songs 1789-1996, Folkways 45051, provided courtesy of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. © 1999. Used by permission. Melody: "Yankee Doodle Dandy;" arranged by Oscar Brand/TRO-Hollis Music, Inc., BMI Harrison's Presidential campaigns were marked by hundreds of songs. "The Harrison Yankee Doodle" magnifies his military accomplishments using a familiar melody and celebrates the very rural "log cabin and hard cider" the previous song makes fun of. Partial lyrics: "Come swell the throng and join the song Make the circle wider Join the round for Harrison, Log Cabin and Hard Cider With Harrison our country's won No treachery can divide her Thy will be done With Harrison, Log Cabin and Hard Cider …" |
