This is buried deep in the "blues lyrics" thread where folks are discussing blues language meanings:

Sorcha--

The one that starts out, "My Mama done told me, when I was in knee pants ....." ??

If yes, I used to know them; I'll have to ruminate. Ooops. Bad metaphor. Ohmigawd. I'll have to dwell on that for a while. Oh Hell, if not now, it's not till Thursday, so here goes. Forgive me if I screw up.

My mama done told me, when I was in knee-pants,
My mama done told me, son/hon
A woman's/A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing,
They'll leave you to sing the BLUES IN THE NIGHT.

From Natchez to Mobile, from Memphis to St. Joe,
Wherever the four winds blow,
I been in some big towns, and heard me some big talk,
And there is one thing I know: A woman's/A man is .....

[B Part] Hear that lonesome whistle, call across the trestle, oo-ee;
A-oo-ee, a-oo-ee;
Clickety clack, echoin' back the blu-u-u-u-ues in the night.

All right, there must be another verse. Damn. But that'll get you started and I'll have something pleasant to dwell on at my all-day digitalization conference tomorrow.

CC

PS. Hope that's the right song, cause I owe you one.

And a quick Google turned these up. e mail sent....even tho it's 3 yrs old.

"Blues In the Night"
Writer(s): Mercer/Arlen

My mama done tol' me, when I was in knee-pants
My mama done tol' me, " Son a woman'll sweet talk"
And give ya the big eye, but when the sweet talkin's done
A woman's a two-face,
A worrisome thing who'll leave ya to sing the blues in the night

Now the rain's a-fallin', hear the train's a-callin, "Whooee!"
(My mama done tol' me) Hear dat lonesome whistle
blowin' 'cross the trestle, "Whooee!"
(My mama done tol' me) A-whooee-ah-whooee
ol' clickety-clack's a-echoin' back th' blues in the night
The evenin' breeze'll start the trees to cryin' and the moon'll hide its light
when you get the blues in the night
Take my word, the mockingbird'll sing the saddest kind o' song,
he knows things are wrong, and he's right

From Natchez to Mobile, from Memphis to St. Joe, wherever the four winds blow
I been in some big towns an' heard me some big talk, but there is one thing I know
A woman's a two-face, a worrisome thing who'll leave ya to sing the blues in the night

My mama was right, there's blues in the night.

Technology wins again. Anyway you've got the song. Thanks for posting that, otherwise--wait, now I have to pay attention tomorrow. Oh, hell.
