Can anyone provide some biog info on the Donegal singer Bridie Gallagher. I have written to her record company and drawn a blank. In the 60s I thought she was "old fashioned", now I love her! What do other catters think of her? Thanks.

Can't help you there, but let's not let the thread slip off the table.

Yeah, I thought she was pretty hokey when I was a child. Now I like the 'lilting' quality, it's not heard much any more.

One of the earliest musical memories I have is of an EP of Bridie Gallagher which my parents used to play frequently. (EP = extended play, vinyl disc with four songs). I can't remember all the titles but "The Holmes (sp?) of Donegal" , was one. She had a very captivating quality to her voice, I can still hear her now if I close my eyes .........

Murray: numerous CDs are still available, Tower records will order.

Sorcha: thanks for that. I know that Bridie came from aound Creeslough(pronounced "Chreesla"), that she was still alive recently, is aged about 80, and had some personal problems with family and drink. Hope I live to read her autobiography

So, does that mean you know the words or tune to the song about 'they're cutting the corn down in Creeslough today'? Care to plunk 'em in the thread or the Digitrad? Longshot, but I have only a snip of that one and would love to see the whole thing if it's out there anywhere...

Hey it's me that looking for info!!!

CUTTING' THE CORN IN CREESLOUGH (From the Bridie Gallagher album "The Girl From Donegal" - traditional but sometimes attributed to Percy French (but I don't believe this). Supposedly based on an overheard actual remark on a transatlantic liner.)

Dear Danny I'm taking the pen in my hand, to tell you we're just out of sight of the land,in a big Anchor liner we're sailing in style, and we're sailing away from the Emerald Isle.

A strange sort of sigh seems to come from us all, as the waves hit the last bit of old Donegal, sure it's good to be you that is taking your tay (tea), where they're cutting the corn in Creeslough today.

Sure I spoke to the Captain but he won't turn around, and if I swam back I'd be apt to be drowned, so I'll stay where I am for the diet is great, and there's lots of combustibles piled on my plate.

Although it is sumptious sure I'd swap the whole lot, for the old wooden spoon in the stirabout pot, and Katie fornenst me a-wettin' the tay, where they're cuttin' the corn in Creeslough today.

There's a woman on board who knows Katie by sight, and we talked of ould times til they put out the light, I'm to meet the good woman tomorrow on deck, and we'll talk about Katie from here to Quebec.

Sure I know I'm no match for her, no not the least, with her house and two cows and her brother a priest, but the woman declares Kitty's heart's on the say(?) (sea?), while mine's with the reapers around Creeslough today.

Ah goodbye to you Danny there's no more to be said, for I think the salt water's got into my head, and it drips from my eyes when I call to my mind, the friends and the colleen I'm leaving behind.

And Katie herself when she bade me goodbye, had just a slight trace of a tear in her eye, And the break in her voice when she said "you might stay", but please God I'll come back to ould Creeslough today.

The Anchor line ships sailed from Moville. The phrase "emerald isle" was coined by United Irishman William Drennan in 1795 in his poem "Erin". Sorry I don't have the skills to post the tune, it's a lovely one, all the best.

It's called "The Emigrant's Letter".

big Anchor liner
big Allen liner

waves hit the last
waves hid the last

Creeslough today
Creeslough the day

so I'll stay where I am for the diet is great,
and there's lots of combustibles piled on my plate.
So here I must stay, Oh I've no cause to fret
The dinner was what you might call a banquet

Although it is scrumptious sure I'd swap the whole lot,
for the old wooden spoon in the stirabout pot,
and sweet Katie Farrell a-wettin' the tay,
where they're cuttin' the corn in Creeslough the day.

Here is a report copied last year form one of the Irish newspapers:

Bridie Gallagher was born in Ards, Ceesslough, Co Donegal, the second youngest of a family of ten. She recorded her first hit in 1956, *A Mother's Love is a Blessing. In July 1957 she recorded *The Boys from the County Armagh which launched her onto the world stage. She has performed in four continents, drawing a record 7,500 audience in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1959. She lived in Belfast for most of her life. In 1976 she lost her 21-year-old son in a motorbike accident. She thought she would never sing again. But she did sing in July 10, 2000, when Donegal County Council honoured her at a special ceremony. "She never really got over that (accident)," said her son Jim, "but she just kept going." "Bridie blazed thye trail for many artists who followed after her and I'm sure that many of them looked upon her as a role model as they started their careers in the music world," council chairman Charlie Bennett said at the ceremony.

When she played the Hanger in Salthill, she drew 2,500 people, the biggest crowd thery ever had.

My first girlfriend was Irish, from Dublin. From that and from my romantic nature grew a liking for Irish folk music, despite much of it recalling the first "Troubles" (how Irish to call Eire's war of independence "Troubles"). I built up a large collection of Irish music on tape and on disc.

I went to see Bridie live at a Glasgow theatre in 1960 and was so enthralled by her that I went back the next night for another helping of the same. And there I was introduced to the reality of show business.
All went well until she came to when she said she had been asked by a member of the audience especially to sing a certain song. That's right:
exactly the same explanation as the night before, and exactly the same song. All the magic went in those few words, and I saw someone doing a job, just as the man who raised the curtain was doing his job. For that
memory to stay in my mind for 48 years says something, doesn't it?
Sure, the humour is off me now.

She could have been asked to do the song on the second night by a different person. No need to get upset about it, IMHO.

Hi there,

Bridie is still living in Belfast but her last recordings were in the 1990s on the Outlet/Chyme lable in Belfast. She has now retired from showbusiness. Her biggest hit was "Boys from Co Armagh" but she also has many other fine songs and albums to her credit, the best to me are from the 1950s and 1960s although she did record right up to the 90s. The track "Cutting the corn in the Creeslough" was recorded in 1959 for the album "Mooonlight in Mayo" and was indeed written by Percy French.

Calm down Ard, it's all a matter of taste and perception. You like Liam Clancy whom I regard less favourably but I respect your right to like whomever the hell you like. The singing of BG reminds me of my rural Donegal childhood.

Basically though, this thread is about biography. 1930 sound about right. Source?

Tim Sorry if I upset you, but bringing Liam Clancy into the argument is sad, Liam is a real folk singer, one time you mentioned Lonnie Donnigan as your favourite singer of My Lagan Love, that`s like listening to Little Richard singing Nessum Dorma.

Brendan O`Dowda` singing of Gortnamona is the No1, and Percy French does seem to have been the writer or else his niece and Brendan O`Dowda are telling porkies.

I first heard and saw Bridie Gallagher at her St. Patrick's Day concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1959. This was my 16th birthday treat. I thought she was great and have loved her singing ever since. Saw her many times after that in London and various parts of Ireland.
She used to be a great hit at the Metropilitan Theatre in Edgware Road, London (sadly no longer there now).
I remember once at the Metropolitan she lost her voice due to a throat infection but still managed to come on stage. The orchester played and she got the audiene to sing along!

Guest, pat. What a coincidence. I was at the same concert on that evening. As I remember the whole place was packed to the doors. She gave a marvellous performance. You mention the Metropolitan. A group of us used to visit it regularly. One of the great items I remember was a session by the late great Joe Lynch. I'll never forget his version of "The 32 Counties". Happy days.

Hello Fiola. So happy to speak to somebody who was also at that lovely concert. Unfortunately, my dad had a bit too much to drink and left us, early in the concert, complaining about our seats, which where behind the performers. The next we saw of him was when Bridie came on. There he was down the front learning over the stage barrier, shaking his finger at Bridie and obviuously telling her about his problem with the seating! Happy days indeed.
I also loved Joe Lynch and, of course, many other Irish permormers; the list is endless.
I would love to tell Bridie how, afer all these yeas, she is still my favourite.

Fiolar & Guest PAT, did Hal Roach, comedian, also figure on that bill, on that particular evening ? and also perhaps Willie Brady ?
I believe that I attended that concert also. But, maybe it ran for a few performances.
BTW Did I read somewhere that Jimmy O'Dea the Dublin Comedian actually owned the METROPOLITAN at some time ?

I must add that talking of Bridie Gallagher reminds me of a night when some friends and I went to see and hear her perform at a rural dancehall in Co.Waterford. The place was packed and the attached bar did a roaring trade. One of my friends , much the worst for wear , after the interval, jumped on stage and with arms outstretched, advanced on Bridie swearing his eternal devotion......Two "minders" opened the nearest Exit door with his head ! But, he never felt anything only the pangs of love!

"Songbirds" is a project by Fil Campbell "The First Ladies of Irish Songs" which celebrates the songs of Delia Murphy, Maggie Barry, Bridie Gallagher, Ruby Murray and Mary O'Hara.

It is available as a CD and there is a DVD of the whole programme series which as well as a 25 minute programme about each singer with loads of archive material, has an introductory programme.

As well as Fil Campbell, Finbar Furey, John Sheahan and Phil COulter also contribute.

Hi Jim,

Great to see you on here. I am sorry to hear that Bridie your mom has not been well. However, I am glad that she remains in good spirits and is still enjoying music etc.
I have been a fan of Bridie's since I first started collecting Irish records when I was 17. My mum and dad who are from Mayo had her records from the 50s and used to go and see her at the Ardri Club in Manchester. I have been in correspondence with Bridie for some years now and I still possess a lovely signed photograph she sent to me in 1994 along with a letter saying she was very flattered I was a fan of hers, as at the time I was only 21. Perhaps your mum might have mentioned me at some time, I am Martin Foster and live in Manchester.
I enjoyed the Songbirds series and wondered if Bridie has any plans to complete her auto biography as she has mentioned this on various TV programmes and articles in the past?
Take care and God bless and best wishes to Bridie.

Ignatius (Carrickfergus)

Seen Bridie many many times all over Ireland
including Donegal with Patrick o.Hagan .She was there on opening night of RTE with Dermot o'Brian , there will never be another with that voice or player like Dermot either.Still listen to her I,m from Tyrone so I liked Eileen as well but Bridie was and will always be the true queen of Irish ballads.
God bless her on her 85th coming up soon I,ll be thinking about her she recogined me one time from the stage I'd seen her so often said I was from Carrick on Shannon but lord knows she performed for hundreds of thousands I forgave her for that , I was just another admirer I,ve lived in the USA for years now but often think about attending her shows , great in concert seemed to just glide across the stage.
God be with her and her family

Hi all

I have been doing my family tree and have been told that my G Grandfather, James Gallagher may be related to Bridie. My research on my G Granda has hit a brick wall when going to Donegal and I only know that his parents were James Gallagher and Rose Docherty.

Older relatives have told me that Bridie was a relative and used to visit my G Granda in Clydebank (or maybe Paisley) where he lived. James had 4 children who survived infancy: Hugh - my Granda, Donald, Mary and Rosie.

Full family tree details are on my website. If anyone knows how I can contact Bridie by letter or or email or can provide any further info then that would be really appreciated

Pull the other one - as the saying goes. I have friends in show business - and that is what Bridie is/was in - and I know what I saw, heard and, most importantly, felt. "Par for the course", my friends tell me. Sorry, Gulliver.

Great to read this thread and see the interest in Bridie Gallagher.

''Fil Campbell presents Songbirds'' features Bridies' biography amd music along with other Irish songbirds. Fil can tailor the show to emphasise a particular artist.
It's a lovely piece of enjoyable nostalgia.
Also features Tom McFarlane on percussion and Brendan Emmett on mandolin.

The show is available for Folk clubs and festivals, arts centres, etc through http://www.amandalynnemusic.com

There are links to songs and videos on my website and on my youtube channel

If you log on to youtube.com. and log on to bridie gallagher, you can listen and hear bridie singing some of her song.I have to admit that in her later years the voice was going downhill.I last saw her in the late sixys,in a local dance hall called the "the west end" just off charing cross in glasgow, and she wasent a patch on her old self,in saying that she was a great singer in her younger days

Hello,
I'm sorry to hear that Bridie is in poor health and hope she will get better. I worked with Bridie many years ago when she did a tour of the states for Bill Fuller who then owned "City Center Ballroom" in N.Y. as well as many other places across the U.S., Canada and Ireland. I worked for Bill at City center and he asked me to go on tour with her in the US.. Folks can say what they wish and whether you like or dislike her singing, she was considered an International Record artist back in the day when it was difficult for many good singers and musicians to get on a record. She was loved by many cacross the globe and always gave her best to her audience. A great singer and a great personality.. No matter what, the show must go on was what she used to tell me.. I later lost touch with Bridie and often wondered how she was getting on.
Jim,... If possible, please tell her Tom Fitzgerald (accordion player) was asking for her and wish her the best of health..

My late mother was from Creeslough and knew Bridie, I think Bridie was born in Ards just outside Creeslough, some of her relations still live there. They can be seen on U Tube {cutting the corn in Creeslough} I know a lot of people today would not appreciate this type of singing but older people like my mother loved her and were very proud of a local Creeslough girl doing well. It brings a tear to my eye when i hear Bridie singing and i think of my dear mother.

Hi to all on these pages. It is my grim task to have to inform you all that Bridie is at this time very gravely ill and I would ask you all to think of her in your prayers. I was just thinking of her and came upon this site. I could not answer you all but I would like to put the record straight that none of Bridies brothers,( Josie, John and Jim all deceased ) at any time had been a priest.

Just listened to a lot of Bridie's music and had a little cry. First listened to Bridie when I was 16, I'm 69 now. Says something, doesn't it? I really can't believe she's gone. RIP Bridie.

Used to see Bridie regularly in Bundoran during the Summer doing her show and also at The Astoria Balroom in the early 60's. She lit up the stage when she came on with her gait and her lilt. Saw her years later in Mullachmore with my son. She still was magic.

Met somone a few years ago in Bromley Kent who said he was a relation of Bridies. He was a singer under the name of Troy Lumpkin. Does anyone remember him??

RIP Bridie

I do hope a bio comes out before too long. There is surely enough information for one.

I'M really sorry that video of the UTV film about Bridie's life went off YouTube. I know there is a question of copyright but it must have been precious to many fans.
