Subject: UK: BBC Radio 2 Folk Website
From: Skipjack K8

Whilst whiling away lonely miles on the M3 in Hampshire last evening, I listened to Folk on 2 on Radio 2.

Mike Harding was going into meltdown about the launch of a Folk website that was, in his opinion, the most important development for folk music in the UK since ...... er, I can't remember.

It is being launched next Wednesday, so it should be worth checking out. There is a section that has Ian Carr and Karen Tweed (and others) playing favourite session tunes, for aspirant session players to hone their style, playing along with. He played the Silver Spear/Spire, and Maid Behind the Bar, as samples, both of which really rocked. Should be fantastic, when we get hold of it.

Also, he mentioned a link page, and I assume Mudcat would be a natural partner, so we'll see what gives, and give Mike a nudge if he hasn't spotted us. Maybe he's a silent 'Catter already. Hi, Mike!

He also played the full version of an Iris Diment number that is allegedly sampled on the site, among others.

Did anyone else hear it, and whaddya think?

Does that make you Skipjack K2 now then - or would that be demotion? And would you be the mountain or the lager?

Mark taped the show - I'll have a listen tonight, sounds interesting.

Kris

The current webpage is at:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/mikeh_show.shtml.  Almost anything would be an improvement on that, but the new site is being designed by Mel McClellan of Sheffield Hallam University, so we expect Great Things...

Is the fact that I have never heard of Iris Diment a good or bad sign for the website? Watching with interest. GB

It's ..... er ...... intoxicating. Good evening, Mike et al.

Ooh - many thanks for Malcolm Douglas' kind words (cheers, Malcolm!), but I'd best set the record straight. Can't take credit for the site design, I'm afraid, that's been done at the Beeb, and it's looking good. I'm content creator/editor, although I'll also have more web-based involvement after launch. We'll be getting a message board set up too, which I'll be hosting, so hopefully speak to some of you there soon. Cheers, all.

Mel

Iris DeMent wrote 'Our Town' and it is on the CD 'Infamous Angel', though you might have heard Kate Rusby sing the song Geordie Broon.
I have grown to love Iris deMents songs and heard a wonderful duet with John Prine played on Mike Hardings show.
