Subject: San Antone song from movie 'Rio Bravo
From: GUEST,boyo35@aol.com
Date: 17 May 01 - 02:59 PM

Looking for Sheet music and lyrics to great song in movie "Rio Bravo" 1959 directed by Howard Hawks. In cho. "Ah Ha San Antone" sung by Ben Johnson and Harry Carrey Jr. It could be called "Trail to San Antone"? Tried to find in John Ford's movie music but no luck. Thanks,Sam

Title is Aha San Antone, but it's in Rio Grande, not Rio Bravo. Still looking for sheet music.

Actually that was The Sons of the Pioneers doing the playing in that film and you may find A Ha San Antone if you search The Sons Of The Pioneers. Ken Curtis the prominent vocalist in Rio Grande was on Gunsmoke as Festus Hagan and was the lead voice with TSOP for some time. He may even have replaced Tim Spencer, I am not sure. I also think he may have been playing guitar on that song and adding a voice too.

Gene Autry and Dale Evans did it too. It might be in one of their songbooks.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: AHA SAN ANTONE (Dale Evans)
From: 12-stringer

From a Bob Nolan site, the lyrics as sung in "Rio Bravo" and with guitar chords in G as played by the 12-stringer:

[G] I want some black-eyed peas
I want some mustard greens
I want some cornpone on the [D7] side.
I want my chicken fried with a [E7] golden hide.
[A7] Aha, [D7] San Antone!

[C] When I was a kid I had a [G] locket
And [A7]inside was a picture o' Davy [D7] Crockett

[G] I know a gal named Ann that lives in TexArkan
Who loves a boy in [D7} Arkansas
But when they take a ride it's on the Texas [E7] side
[A7]Aha, [D7] San Antone!

There's more than this. I haven't sung it in a good while, but the structure is AABA, so you need another verse after the "blackeyed peas" and before the chorus. Two more verses I can remember, from the late 1940s 78rpm by Rosalie Allen:

To me this place is strange
Oh take me to the range
Where the blue, blue bonnets grow
Let me put my boots on
And my cowboy suits on [sic]
Aha, San Antone!

Don't you say I'm silly
Cause I like my chile
All over my scrambled eggs
Give me some enchiladas
And a big quesada (?)
Aha, San Antone!

There's also another variant of the chorus -- maybe 6 verses and 2 choruses, in all. I have a Real Audio of this, from the long-gone "Record Lady" juke box site, but it's on the hard drive of a dead computer and I can't see well enough to transfer it into a live one. (That "can't see well enough" is why the dead computer is dead, BTW.)

Here's a version by Roy and Dale from a 1949 radio show with quite a number of verses: http://www.archive.org/details/LouBrigOrchRoyRogersDaleEvans-SanAntone1949

Here's my transcription from the recording at www.archive.org. (See the complete link above.)

AHA SAN ANTONE
As sung by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans

[BOTH] I want some black-eyed peas. I want some mustard greens.
I want some cornpone on the side.
I want my chicken fried with a golden hide.
Aha, San Antone!

Now don't you say I'm silly 'cause I like my chili
All over my scrambled eggs.
I want to go to Dallas, see my cousin Alice.
Aha, San Antone!

I never was meant for the city,
And I don't like it one little bit.

I know a … stand.* It's by the Rio Grande,
Just across from Mexico.
I want an enchilada and a big tostada.
Aha, San Antone!

[DALE] I know a gal named Ann that lived in Texarkan'
That loved a boy in Arkansas,
But when they take a ride, it's on the Texas side.
Aha, San Antone!

I want a great big moon, a great big Texas moon,
Where the night is light as day.
I want a feller too, a big buckaroo.
Aha, San Antone!

[ROY YODELS.]

[BOTH] To me this place is strange. Oh, take me to the range
Where the blue, bluebonnets grow.
[ROY] Gi' me a gal that's true. [DALE] Gi' me a buckaroo.
[BOTH] Aha, San Antone!

[* I don't know what they're singing here, but you could sing "taco stand" and it would make sense.]

The scene in the movie "Rio Grande" shows Ken Curtis, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., and the boy who played John Wayne's son in the movie singing this song. The Sons of the Pioneers did do some songs in the movie but this one was not one of those done by the whole group.

In the movie they start singing a verse that goes something like -
"Well I want to go down to the Alamo,
Down where my daddy...."
and then they are interrupted by the arrival of Maureen O'Hara. Does anyone know that verse?

"Oh now I want to go
down to the Alamo

Down where my Grandpa bit..."

That's all there is in "Rio Grande"

I can't find the lyrics for this verse anywhere which leads me to believe that it was scripted to fit the movie scene and stopped as
Maureen O'Hara walks in. ...only 2 full verses in the movie which depicted a Cavalry post in the post Civil War West Circa 1870-1875.

The song was written by Dale Evans. Taco stands didn't exist in the 1800's or at least they weren't called taco stands back then... Probably called a "Cantina", up here in the states a "Bar and Grill".

here is Rosalie Allen's version ...for me too much yodeling and too many musical riffs.

but to each his own...
