Just back from the Yorkshire gathering. Full of bon homie and beer. Thinking about how mudcat bridges any gaps and I got infatuated with Anthony John Clarkes song "The Broken Years". It is originaly about the troubles in Belfast but can be applied to anywhere where there is opression or injustice. Sent shivers down my back and to lay it to rest I need to share the words of the chorus.

I want to eat at the same table
Break the same bread
March down the same streets
Hear the same bands
I want to sing the same songs
Say the same prayers
Together we can mend the boken years

The other one, in a totaly different vein, that I always think about when I am away from home is Spencer the Rover -

His children ran to him with their prittle-prattling stories
Their prittle-prattling stories that drive cares away<

Always makes me miss the little buggers - even though they are all grown up now! Anyone else got any spine tingling songs?

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Matt,

I envy you.

Believe me, as you get older, the real spine tingling songs get fewer.

Stay young as long as you can.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

I know it's not a song, although part of it was made into a song. But the whole symphony makes my spine tingle.

Uh - yeah. It's been a favourite of mine since I heard it on a Steeleye Span album (vinyl, no less).
Hey - nice shoes. How do you keep them in such good shape?

Diva, I love the Faure too, sensual music for lots of things wasted as a requiem, but perfect for sensual pleasures
, But the songs of the moment are Lagan Love..
"..No Life I own, nor Liberty
and Love is lord of all"

and " I Live not where I love"
."..singing sweetly and completely
songs of pleasure songs of love
my heart is with him all together
Tho' I live not where I love"
(This is also my current "squirrel song)
and the Beautiful fishing boat song that Ickle Dorritt sang at The Gathering.... shivers down the spine,
In fact many songs from the gathering.. and Bill/sables "Whitby Fisherman" and the tune Dark Island..

Ralph McTell - Jesus Wept is top tingle at the moment. It is true that tingle factor songs get less as you get older - or am I missing something?

This song from Carole Kings' album "Music" always gets me
Patrish

Whispering wind came uninvited, looking for somewhere else to go.
Here is a lamp I've left unlighted, aren't you someone I should know?
Memory's flame is soon ignited, lighting my lamp with amber glow.
Quietly friends are reunited, singing a song of long ago.

Cry, cry for someone, who just can't be happy,
And be glad you can feel enough to cry.

Younger than always...time descended, bringing me brand new seeds to sow.
Now that they've been a long time planted, what must I do to help them grow?
If it had been as I intended, I wouldn't have the peace I know.
Loving the people I've befriended, and singing a song of long ago.

As it began, so I will end it, singing a song of long ago.
Loving the people I've befriended, and singing a song of long ago.
