Subject: Bomber's Moon From: The Walrus Date: 23 May 01 - 05:17 PM Does anyone out there have the words to "Bomber's Moon" by Mike Harding? I used to have the lyrics (painstakingly copied from a TV performance) but, unfortunately my songbook went AWOL some time back (and I hadn't yet copied that particular song to disc). In case anyone has the lyrics, but knows it by another name, it starts
'44 in "Bomber County", It's driving me up the wall, can somebody please help. Thanks

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bombers' Moon From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 May 01 - 05:22 PM From the programme 'Goodnight Sweetheart'. Time traveller Gary Sparrow has travelled back to the 1940's, wartime London, and fallen in love with the landlady of the local pub (incidentally, Manitas used to deliver papers to that very same pub!!), and she has dragooned him into doing firewatch (standing on a roof, watching for fires). She hears the noise of an aircraft, looks up at the full moon and says 'Bombers moon'. Gary, a product of the 1990's looks at her and says 'do they really? How can you tell from here?' referring to the practice of exposing buttocks in the windows of various vehicles. The whole thing rides on the double meaning of moon, a meaning which I believe originated on the other side of the Pond...... LTS |
Subject: Lyr Add: BOMBERS MOON (Mike Harding) From: Eugene Judge Date: 03 Mar 04 - 02:48 PM Mike Harding has kindly provided me with the lyrics for his "Bombers Moon". Eugene Judge ____________________________________________________________________ Bombers Moon Mike Harding 1 '44 in Bomber County Young men waiting for the night, In the hedgerows birds are singing, Singing in the falling light. ~ And the captain says, 'Tonight there'll be a bomber's moon, We'll be there and back underneath a bomber's moon. A thousand bombers over the northern sea Heading out, out for Germany.' 2 Chalkey White stands at the dartboard, Curly Thompson writes to his wife, Nobby Clarke and Jumbo Johnson Are playing cards and smoking pipes; And over the hangers rises a bomber's moon, Full and clear rising, as the engines croon And the planes they taxi out on to runway five And sail off out into the silvery night. 3 Sandy Campbell checks his oil gauge, The Belgian coast is coming soon; Curly Thompson lifts his sextant, Lines up on a bomber's moon And waves are shining there beneath the bomber's moon. The Lancasters flying high beneath the bomber's moon Coming in along the Belgian coast A thousand silver-shrouded ghosts. 4 Flak flies up around the city, Jumbo Johnson banks the plane, Goes in low and drops his payload, Turns to join the pack again. And people are dying there beneath the bomber's moon, The city's a raging hell beneath the bomber's moon, And the planes head out towards the northern sea: Young men coming home from victory. 5 Over Belgium came the fighters, Flying high against the night; Curly Thompson saw them com~ng, Closing in before he died. And the young men shot them down beneath the bomber's moon, Shot them down in flames beneath the bomber's moon; Young men sending young men to their graves Saw them down into the North Sea waves. 6 Now it's '44 in Bomber County Mrs White dusts the picture and she cries: Chalky White in uniform Looking as he did the day he died. And for God's sake no more bomber's moons, No more young men going out to die too soon, Old men sending young men out to die, Young men dying for a politician's lies. For God's sake no more bomber's moons, No more young men going out to die too soon, Old men sending young men out to kill. If we don't stop them then they never will. No more no more bomber's moons No more no more bomber's moons. If I keep a green bough in my heart The singing bird will come Lyrics provided by Mike Harding BOMBERS MOON "Dedicated to the memory of my father, Flight Sergeant Louis Arthur 'Curly' Harding, a navigator in Lancaster Bombers, who died with his crew when his plane was shot down returning from a raid over Germany. It's also dedicated to the memory of my good friend Jurgen Boch of Cologne, who was a small child in a bomb shelter in Germany on the night my father died, and to my mother who was a bride, a widow and a mother within the space of a year." Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bombers' Moon From: alanabit Date: 03 Mar 04 - 03:18 PM Hi Eugene, I have just read the words to "Bomber's Moon", which you kindly sent in. I have always liked Mike Harding, but I didn't realise he got that good. It was of particular interest to me because Merle (8) and Jonah (5), my two (German) children, are sleeping peacefully next door as I type this from Cologne. In the twenty years I have lived here, I have learned quite a lot more about Cologne and its part in the war. I was also interested in the mention of the name Jurgen Bock. It could be spelt the way you spelt it, or it could be the chap I ran into some years ago. At the time he was a sound engineer and the producer of "Forces Folk" for BFBS. I went in and did a session there circa 1985. He also recorded a short live set of mine. He was a very nice bloke. He must be well into his sixties by now. I wonder if you could ask Mike Harding if we are talking about the same man. I haven't seen him since then, largely because the forces folk scene, which he was interested in, ceased to exist around the end of the eighties. Regards, Alan. |
