I remember reading a book when I was about 10 including the first verse of a hymn going "Alone yet not alone am I, yet in my solitude so drear..." and I thought of it recently, and wanted to know thes rest and maybe the melody because I remember I had thought it sounded nice. If anyone can help, it'd be very much appreciated.

A translation of a German hymn, Allein, und doch nicht ganz allein, it seems.  The story has become attached to several apparantly quite separate incidents.  See:
