Anyone remember that one? (AB, CD FEG? L, MNO FEG!)

Anyway, I am taking the issue out of the thread in which it arose... what is the Mudcat consensus on not spelling out words that sound like letters, as in where ru? I personally can't stand it, but I do remember reading CDB and them there books, and enjoying them... is this an etiquette question?

I remember CDB, too, but I loathe the current use of such things; it smacks of lazy semantics, to me.:-)

U 2, I never liked it either. some folks R just lazy. Sometimes U have 2 concentr8 just 2 no what was said. Y wood U do that? R U saving $ 4 using < Letters.No U R not. I really have a 8==8 2 pick wit those people.Every1 should take the time 2 rite in full words & sentences.It's BS!There R a # of reasons Y U shouldn't particip8 in such Bhavior, so stop it B4 some1 gets hurt.

I suppose it saves space if you're sending a message on a mobile phone, where the number of letters you can include may be limited, and maybe it's quicker when you're keying in letters on a tiny numeric pad.

But in a context like the Mudcat it is much much slower to read, which gets in the way of communication. That goes for most of the three letter acronyms as well. Instead of being able to read fluently you find yourself having to decode the stuff.

Also, I think it looks ugly.

Thank you all. I think the cell-phone thing is the likely culprit... and I'm glad I'm not alone in having a hard time with these when reading. Perhaps if you grow up using them, you can read them as easily as real words, but us old fogeys just can't seem to keep up...

And I'd forgotten about M N X... what a scrumtious breakfast!

Thread creep alert: you will sometimes see hemendeksz (pronounced hem end ex) on Hungarian menus, yes, it's ham and eggs, spelled phonetically into Hungarian. They also have dzsem - "djem" - for jam. Apparently these don't translate...

My kids went through a phase like that when Sinead O'Connor was popular. They seemed to think it was exceptionally cool to write "B4" instead of "before." They grew up, and now they think it's obnoxious.
I also thing all the Internet-speak acronyms are quite obnoxious, unless they are used very sparingly and only when their use is humorous. Otherwise, I think ROTFLMAO is about as tedious as a human being can get.
I see there's a thread name that begins with the prefix FR:. I wonder what the heck THAT means.....

I'll offer a comment about your kids - all kidding aside

The acronyms pre-date the Internet - they go back to the BBS days (and earlier) when you had to "byte" the bullet, and pay "real money" for every message that went "down the wire" (which it was then) - acronyms help conserve bandwidth.
