Well, I've had some turkey ideas for permathreads, but would a schedule of internet folkie radio shows be a good idea? You could read the schedule and click on a link to get the show.

Should it be part of "What's On?" I'd volunteer to maintain it, unless Bert WANTS to do it - we know he does a pile of work around here already.

Note that if the idea is approved, I'll eventually delete discussions and hope people submit names, URLs and brief summaries of what the shows are about (Irish, Spanish, newfolk, mixed, etc). I'll then stick the information in a table and delete the post.

What say you?

My first post as a member!

There are 3 stations available at www.renradio.com. There are three clickable links to folk radio, two are devoted to renaisance music, and the bands that perform at ren faires, the last is titled celtic world music.

I'm a brand new member so my vote doesn't count for much, but I think what you propose would be a great service. I would be very interested if anyone knows of any UK based folk stations.

Elffi/Diane, you're off to a great start - WELCOME to Mudcat! Thanks for your contribution! I know of the BBC website. and they have a few folk broadcasts. I think Mike Harding is on Wed nights, but I need to do some checking for exact times.

I started doing this based on Mudcat time. I'm not sure I shouldn't use Greenwich Mean time, since we have folks here from all over the world and mostly everyone can convert. If you have Windows and double click on the time, you can view your time zone and see a "GMT +/- X hours." Hopefully, folks will tell me what they'd like.

Excellent idea, Jeri. Assuming this project is embraced universally, I've taken the liberty of seeding the pot with a couple of links for starters:
CKUA has:
A Bluegrass State of Mind - Sunday Mornings @ 1100 (I'm listening as I type)
The Woodsongs Oldtime Radio Hour - Sunday Mornings @ 1000 - I think this is syndicated from WUKY in Kentucky.
Folk Routes Sunday Aft @ 4:00
The Celtic Show - Friday Nights from 6-8

CJSW
University of Calgary radio has:
Folkcetera Thursday night from 6-8,
Tombstone After Dark (Spaghetti western) Monday nights from 7-8,
Blues Witness Wednesday nights 6:30-8:00

Both stations operate out of Alberta, all times MST.
Cheers, Bardford

Excellent idea, this. Here's some from the links page on my website (jeremiah.ca) (Now there's a subtle yet shameless plug!)

The Free Wheeling Folk Show - Radio station CFMU in Hamilton, Ontario.
Saturday mornings from 10 to noon. FM 93.3 locally. On the internet type: cfmu.mcmaster.ca into the URL (no www's or nothing): it'll take you to the site, then click on "Live Feed".
Jim Marino is the host, researcher and chief cook. Jim is a tireless booster of an impressive array of local talent. His show features live performances as well as recordings. His reputation is such that the annual CFMU fundraising concert, with the quality of performers that he attracts, has become one of the best bargains in concert-going you'll encounter anywhere.

The Acoustic Workshop - Radio station CIUT in Toronto, Ontario.
Monday evenings from 7 to 8. FM 89.9 locally. Internet: www.ciut.fm
Rick Fielding hosts (lotsa live music & jamming) and Heather Fielding produces, corrects Rick and kibitzes.

Back To The Sugar Camp - Radio station CIUT in Toronto, Ontario.
Thursdayevenings from 6 to 7. FM 89.9 locally. Internet: www.ciut.fm

Just Us Folk - Radio station CKPC in Brantford, Ontario.
Sundayevenings from 6 to 7. FM 92.1 locally.
Internet: http://www.ckpc.on.ca/features.html
Host Jan Vanderhorst. Recordings and interviews. (And so convenient for me - just the time when I'm travelling to the White Oak Folk Club in Oakville.)

WUMB Radio - Boston 91.9 FM. Internet feed - wouldja believe 24 hours a day of folk and roots music?
http://www.wumb.org/

A Sign of the Times - Radio station 6X-FM in London, Ontario.
Almost every Sunday morning from 9:00 until 11:00 with host Alistair Brown keeps you up to date on the traditional folk music scene.

Jeremiah - that was perfect!

OK, hows about this. I need as a minimum:

1. The name of the show
2. The time it's on.
3. What time zone it's in.
4. URL - address of a website I can link to.
If you have the address of the actual broadcast, it would be nice, but I can figure it out.

It would be nice to know what types of music they play as well. Trad, new or both; music from all over the planet, or mostly Irish, Scots, Canadian, etc.

Radio frequencies and location would be good, just in case someone actually wants to listen on a real radio.

Thank you all for the information you already have and are planning to give me!

Jeremiah writes concerning WUMB " Wudja believe 24 hours a day of folk and roots music ?".

Well, no Jeremiah, I wouldn't believe it. I would believe 24 hours a day of wannabe singer-songwriters warbling instantly forgettable self-penned compositions.

For folk and roots music, somebody might give a link to Archie Fisher's Radio Scotland show.

I will have to give myself a plug (that sounds painful!!)

I host a Celtic music program called TRADITIONS on WFDU-FM - Sunday mornings at 9am Eastern Time - at www.wfdu.fm.

My long-running folk show is TRADITIONS, co-hosted by Bill Hahn, which can be heard Sunday afternoons from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time at www.wfdu.fm.

Guaranteed traditional folk, with little interference from the singer-song"whiner" - just good songwriters!!

Abby - aya carumba!

Time Zones! I can figure out Toronto is Eastern Time, because I've been there. I don't have a clue about some places, like...
] Alberta, what time zone
Can't you hear me call?
I'm a thousand miles away from you
And I got no clue at all.

Ahem.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this. One big table would be really nice, but it would be too big, and folks would have to scroll. I have a feeling that premium times, like Sundays, would get jammed. What I've done is started a table for each day of the week. You click on a day, and go to that schedule.

I haven't got everybody's links added yet. It will take some time to get all the initial info in there. I may put up what I have so far just to have something, and so folks can comment on it.

Formatting isn't necessary, nor does it save me any time so you needn't worry about making clickies. Simple addresses are great.

Again, thanks for the contributions so far, and keep 'em comin'!!!

Jeri,

Alberta is on Mountain Standard Time.
9 0 'clock Eastern is 7 O'clock Mountain Time. So if I'm listening to John Prine, for instance, here in Alberta, it's actually " ten o'clock before I realize I'm havin' no fun". Also the High Noon shootouts in our town always happen at ten.

"I get a three o'clock shadow
A twenty-two hour flu.
If it weren't for the leap year,
Don't know what I'd do."

Looks like MST is three hours away from the Mudcat clock. I'm sending this just past 7 PM local time.

Thanks for your work on this project, Jeri. It's gonna be a good one.

Jeri, assuming you have Windows, double-click the clock in your sys tray (bottom-right corner) then click the time zone tab. Up & Down arrows will cycle you through the zones & major cities & hours away from GMT. Be sure to 'Cancel' and NOT 'ok' to leave it so you don't accidentally reset your computer.

Hey Mike! Caught you speaking French this week in the show prior to yours. :-)

For me, here in the dessert, these shows are a FINE thing and my only live contact (other than PalTalk) to the real folk world. I thoroughly enjoy shows as Mike's and Pablo's & listen regularly. That's why I have so many links & why I figgered out how to open them direct from the Scheduler. (RealPlay told me this couldn't be done.) I also much enjoyed Ron's show but find it much harder to pick up with Windows Media Player than RP casts.

Thanks Abby. I tried the clock thing, but there are only a few cities listed. I probably could have figured out Alberta, but thanks to Bardford for making sure that I do it this year. (Two hours Eastern time is as far east as you can get in the US, but I think there's another one farther east in Canada called "Atlantic.")

I'm probably not going to put the Scheduler settings in the table I'm doing because we have folks using different versions of Windows, Mac, Linux and who-knows-what-else. I, for example, don't have a c:\internet\ folder, which is where your Real Player is located. It's good information to have, though. I'm sure a lot of folks don't know they can have their computers automatically start playing the shows.

I'm not quite sure what to do with the syndicated shows such as Prairie Home Companion and Thistle and Shamrock. I don't really want to have links to those shows on multiple radio stations. Then again, it would be good for folks to know when it's on in various places so they can choose when to listen. I may wind up with a separate table for these shows.

I have a prototype mostly done, and I'm just entering the shows in the right day/time slots. It should be up in a day or two.

I will eventually delete messages after I enter the data. If anyone objects to this, please let me know. I could start a separate thread for the schedules. It might not be a bad idea to do that anyway so we keep a record of discussion, but I may just be being anal about making things disappear.

Just wondering if you should put 'permathread' into the thread name, either this one, or the separate thread if you create it.

For PHC you could link to it's WEB site since archives are available there: PHC. I could not find an archive of Thistle & Shamrock so a separate table showing times & links just for it might not be a bad idea.

Jeri, Whatever you think is good. I'd at least list the direct URLs with the note that they are usable in Windows as 1) icons/shortcuts or 2) from Run or 3) from the appropriate media Player (Ctrl-L, usually). Non-Windows machines will have their own systems but would still need the direct URL. It's faster, easier and does not require you to waste resources opening the web browser. The link for IvanB's WKAR seems to be http://wkar.org/metafilz/wkaram.ram

Hugh at About.com put together some extensive work. The definition of "folk" is extremely liberal, though. http://folkmusic.about.com/musicperform/folkmusic/bl_radioschedule.htm

He also notes that my noting the direct stream URL may have a problem for some: note: it is a copyright infringement to publish direct links to audio streams. These links take you to station pages that link to the stream. Where, BTW, they can get a little advertising in, of course.

Eagle's Whistle (celtic trad) http://www.kazu.org/sun.html

Webcasts live on Sunday 8-10pm (GMT) don't know the USA time but the website has schedules etc.

UK Bradford Community Radio has a show by Tim Moon on Monday's from 8pm to 10pm (repeated after midnight)and I've caught it going on longer than scheduled anyway. It is webcast on www.bcb.yorks.com

Can recommend the Eagle's Whistle on KAZU but its usually on 7pm - 9pm on Sundays in the UK. One of the presenters "yr Lancashire Lad" is currently in the UK and has been spotted playing his concertina at both Whitley and Flyde. It will be interesting to hear his comments when he gets back on to the show in October.

If you download Spinner.com and bookmark it, you'll have a 24 hr. folk radio station. I've heard both Rick Fielding and Art Theime played on it. They have many genres of music you can choose from ie; Motown, Celtic, Rap,etc. I have this on my computer all day at work, but that's between us.

What a fantastic idea!!! If somebody (with more computer ability than me) could knock all this into shape and keep it as a permathread, I think we really could have hit on something.
Apart from Archie Fishers amazing Travelling Folk Thusday nights on Radio Scotland, theres a programme by Iain Anderson weekday afternoons on the same station and he plays a nice mixture of Scottish folk and decent country music. Here´s the link (I hope)http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/listen.html
hmmmmm.......not very blue, is it....
