Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Jeri Date: 03 Jun 01 - 12:07 PM Well, I've had some turkey ideas for permathreads, but would a schedule of internet folkie radio shows be a good idea? You could read the schedule and click on a link to get the show. Should it be part of "What's On?" I'd volunteer to maintain it, unless Bert WANTS to do it - we know he does a pile of work around here already. Note that if the idea is approved, I'll eventually delete discussions and hope people submit names, URLs and brief summaries of what the shows are about (Irish, Spanish, newfolk, mixed, etc). I'll then stick the information in a table and delete the post. What say you? |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: elffi Date: 03 Jun 01 - 12:42 PM My first post as a member! There are 3 stations available at www.renradio.com. There are three clickable links to folk radio, two are devoted to renaisance music, and the bands that perform at ren faires, the last is titled celtic world music. I'm a brand new member so my vote doesn't count for much, but I think what you propose would be a great service. I would be very interested if anyone knows of any UK based folk stations. Diane |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Jeri Date: 03 Jun 01 - 12:59 PM Elffi/Diane, you're off to a great start - WELCOME to Mudcat! Thanks for your contribution! I know of the BBC website. and they have a few folk broadcasts. I think Mike Harding is on Wed nights, but I need to do some checking for exact times. I started doing this based on Mudcat time. I'm not sure I shouldn't use Greenwich Mean time, since we have folks here from all over the world and mostly everyone can convert. If you have Windows and double click on the time, you can view your time zone and see a "GMT +/- X hours." Hopefully, folks will tell me what they'd like. |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 03 Jun 01 - 01:08 PM Excellent idea, Jeri. Assuming this project is embraced universally, I've taken the liberty of seeding the pot with a couple of links for starters: CKUA has: A Bluegrass State of Mind - Sunday Mornings @ 1100 (I'm listening as I type) The Woodsongs Oldtime Radio Hour - Sunday Mornings @ 1000 - I think this is syndicated from WUKY in Kentucky. Folk Routes Sunday Aft @ 4:00 The Celtic Show - Friday Nights from 6-8 CJSW University of Calgary radio has: Folkcetera Thursday night from 6-8, Tombstone After Dark (Spaghetti western) Monday nights from 7-8, Blues Witness Wednesday nights 6:30-8:00 Both stations operate out of Alberta, all times MST. Cheers, Bardford |

Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Geoff the Duck Date: 03 Jun 01 - 02:09 PM Great idea to gather such information all onto one place, so that we don't have to rely on chance happenings and surprise clickies in passing threads. Quack Quack Quack!!!! |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 03 Jun 01 - 02:19 PM Excellent idea, this. Here's some from the links page on my website (jeremiah.ca) (Now there's a subtle yet shameless plug!)
The Free Wheeling Folk Show - Radio station CFMU in Hamilton, Ontario.
The Acoustic Workshop - Radio station CIUT in Toronto, Ontario.
Back To The Sugar Camp - Radio station CIUT in Toronto, Ontario.
Just Us Folk - Radio station CKPC in Brantford, Ontario.
WUMB Radio - Boston 91.9 FM. Internet feed - wouldja believe 24 hours a day of folk and roots music?
A Sign of the Times - Radio station 6X-FM in London, Ontario. |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Jeri Date: 03 Jun 01 - 02:29 PM Jeremiah - that was perfect! OK, hows about this. I need as a minimum:
1. The name of the show It would be nice to know what types of music they play as well. Trad, new or both; music from all over the planet, or mostly Irish, Scots, Canadian, etc. Radio frequencies and location would be good, just in case someone actually wants to listen on a real radio. Thank you all for the information you already have and are planning to give me! |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Night Owl Date: 03 Jun 01 - 03:57 PM Great idea Jeri!!! Jeremiah already included my favorite local folk/blues/celtic station: wumb 91.9fm They also broadcast some music festivals and concerts. |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Murray MacLeod Date: 03 Jun 01 - 04:04 PM Jeremiah writes concerning WUMB " Wudja believe 24 hours a day of folk and roots music ?". Well, no Jeremiah, I wouldn't believe it. I would believe 24 hours a day of wannabe singer-songwriters warbling instantly forgettable self-penned compositions. For folk and roots music, somebody might give a link to Archie Fisher's Radio Scotland show. Murray |

Time Zones! I can figure out Toronto is Eastern Time, because I've been there. I don't have a clue about some places, like...
Ahem. I haven't got everybody's links added yet. It will take some time to get all the initial info in there. I may put up what I have so far just to have something, and so folks can comment on it. Formatting isn't necessary, nor does it save me any time so you needn't worry about making clickies. Simple addresses are great. Again, thanks for the contributions so far, and keep 'em comin'!!! |

I host Folk Roots/Folk Branches every Thursday morning on CKUT, 90.3 FM in Montreal. CKUT's RealAudio feed is available from the Folk Roots/Folk Branches site at

Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Abby Sale Date: 04 Jun 01 - 09:40 PM Jeri, assuming you have Windows, double-click the clock in your sys tray (bottom-right corner) then click the time zone tab. Up & Down arrows will cycle you through the zones & major cities & hours away from GMT. Be sure to 'Cancel' and NOT 'ok' to leave it so you don't accidentally reset your computer. Hey Mike! Caught you speaking French this week in the show prior to yours. :-) For me, here in the dessert, these shows are a FINE thing and my only live contact (other than PalTalk) to the real folk world. I thoroughly enjoy shows as Mike's and Pablo's & listen regularly. That's why I have so many links & why I figgered out how to open them direct from the Scheduler. (RealPlay told me this couldn't be done.) I also much enjoyed Ron's show but find it much harder to pick up with Windows Media Player than RP casts.

Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Jeri Date: 04 Jun 01 - 10:17 PM Thanks Abby. I tried the clock thing, but there are only a few cities listed. I probably could have figured out Alberta, but thanks to Bardford for making sure that I do it this year. (Two hours Eastern time is as far east as you can get in the US, but I think there's another one farther east in Canada called "Atlantic.") I'm probably not going to put the Scheduler settings in the table I'm doing because we have folks using different versions of Windows, Mac, Linux and who-knows-what-else. I, for example, don't have a c:\internet\ folder, which is where your Real Player is located. It's good information to have, though. I'm sure a lot of folks don't know they can have their computers automatically start playing the shows. I'm not quite sure what to do with the syndicated shows such as Prairie Home Companion and Thistle and Shamrock. I don't really want to have links to those shows on multiple radio stations. Then again, it would be good for folks to know when it's on in various places so they can choose when to listen. I may wind up with a separate table for these shows. I have a prototype mostly done, and I'm just entering the shows in the right day/time slots. It should be up in a day or two. I will eventually delete messages after I enter the data. If anyone objects to this, please let me know. I could start a separate thread for the schedules. It might not be a bad idea to do that anyway so we keep a record of discussion, but I may just be being anal about making things disappear. |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Burke Date: 05 Jun 01 - 05:45 PM Just wondering if you should put 'permathread' into the thread name, either this one, or the separate thread if you create it. For PHC you could link to it's WEB site since archives are available there: PHC. I could not find an archive of Thistle & Shamrock so a separate table showing times & links just for it might not be a bad idea. |

Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: IvanB Date: 06 Jun 01 - 04:56 PM Jeri, I had a brainfart when I listed the programs for WKAR above. Saturday 8pm's program is actually 'American Roots,' IMO nowhere near as good as Mike's program which I catch online whenever possible. |
Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Abby Sale Date: 06 Jun 01 - 07:59 PM Jeri, Whatever you think is good. I'd at least list the direct URLs with the note that they are usable in Windows as 1) icons/shortcuts or 2) from Run or 3) from the appropriate media Player (Ctrl-L, usually). Non-Windows machines will have their own systems but would still need the direct URL. It's faster, easier and does not require you to waste resources opening the web browser. The link for IvanB's WKAR seems to be http://wkar.org/metafilz/wkaram.ram |

Subject: RE: Internet Folk Shows From: Abby Sale Date: 08 Jun 01 - 08:34 AM Hugh at About.com put together some extensive work. The definition of "folk" is extremely liberal, though. http://folkmusic.about.com/musicperform/folkmusic/bl_radioschedule.htm He also notes that my noting the direct stream URL may have a problem for some: note: it is a copyright infringement to publish direct links to audio streams. These links take you to station pages that link to the stream. Where, BTW, they can get a little advertising in, of course. |
