Subject: RE: What do u listen to? From: GUEST,SDShad Date: 06 Jun 01 - 10:22 PM John--John Prine wrote "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness," and sings it with Nanci on "Other Voices, Other Rooms," a marvelous album that inspired me to add three particular songs to my repertoire: Kate Wolf's "Across the Great Divide," Townes Van Zandt's "Tecumseh Valley," and Woodie Guthrie's "Do Re Mi." But I ain't done yet--got my eye on learning Ralph McTell's "From Clare to Here," too.... Thanks, Matt. But hey, the way I see it, it's not that I don't acknowledge some (very fuzzy, overlapping) boundaries between musical genres. It's just that I see no reason not to cross them. Enriches one's cultural experience, I say. Oh, yeah, and I forgot Iggy Pop, the Who, the Clash, Queen, Toots and the Maytalls, and John Renbourn. Chris |

A random list of favourites would include Waylon Jennings, The Clancy Brothers, polyphonic music from Georgia and Corsica, and Bryn Terfel's Welsh album, We'll Keep a Welcome. I became a member of the Mudcat just a couple of months ago, and have been introduced to artists I would never have heard otherwise: The Boarding Party, and Janet Russell, a singer I know nothing about other than that she sings what one of the best rendition of a traditional ballad I have ever heard, The Dowie Dens of Yarrow on Fyre and Sworde: Songs of the Border Reivers. I will definitely be buying as much of her stuff as I can my hands on. Fyre and Sworde is my current favourite CD - every single song is superb. CET |

Man, the crazy stuff that ran thru his brain that summer! This includes a version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" with totally different, and funnier lyrics and perhaps his greatest unreleased song "I'm Not There (1956)." (If you're familiar with this song maybe you can answer me this - What's the 1956 about?) Subject: RE: What do u listen to? From: mack/misophist Date: 05 Jul 02 - 02:31 PM Right now I mosty listen to: Lord Buckley The Clancey Bros Celia Cruz Finbar Furey The Chieftans But, like many people with a record collection that's too big to actually listen to, I could say I get as much or even more satisfaction from running my eye along the spines of the records and cd's and remembering the music in them. Memory may pale beside actual listening, but it can nevertheless be VERY good.

Subject: RE: What do u listen to? From: C-flat Date: 06 Jul 02 - 03:07 AM This week I've been all over the place (musically speaking). I've been listening to snippets of the forthcoming "Counting Crows" C.D. which led me to dig out some of there old stuff (I love "August and everything after), Then I was listening to David Bowie being interviewed this week and that brought back so many memories of my youth that I had to listen to "Hunky Dory".A tape in my car of our very own Jerry Rasmussen (my favourite-"Handful of songs").I've also listened to a bit of Django and, on the express instruction of my daughter, Abba, followed by Kylie Minogue! If it's done well, I'll listen to it! |

Subject: RE: What do u listen to? From: Socorro Date: 06 Jul 02 - 01:28 PM For pure voice quality, it's hard to find Patsy Cline's match, IMHO. BTW, if anyone is deep into obscure artists who rarely recorded - I LOVE the voice of "Baby Ruth" Davis of the Davis Sisters. From Philadelphia, they recorded in the early 50s, I believe for Gotham. The feeling in Ruth's beautiful voice beats anything i've ever heard, including Mahalia. I also like Clifton Chenier, Slim Harpo, Professor Longhair, Larry Williams, Spiritual QCs with Williams Bros.(no relation to Larry), Solomon Burke, Yeska, Iris Dement, John Prine, Hank Williams (no relation to...). Gosh, there are so many more; if this thread lives much longer, maybe i'll return and not let my favorites be neglected! |
Subject: RE: What do u listen to? From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 06 Jul 02 - 03:45 PM Depends on my mood. Those in heaviest rotation are anything by Mr. Stanley Turrentine, Gene Harris, Stan Getz, Carmen MacRae, Los Lobos, Mark Knopfler with or without the rest of Dire Straits,The Swan Silvertones and the Harmonizing Four, a mix of rhythm and blues groups like the Penguins, the Del Vikings and the Moonglows, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry and for folk, I always end up going back to the stuff recorded in the twenties... Charlie Poole, Mississippi John Hurt and almost everything off the Anthology Of American Folk Music. Mix in Reverend Gary Davis, Leo Kottke and Jerry Lee Lewis and simmer until done. Season to taste. :-) Jerry |
