Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,ClumsyReverend Date: 19 Dec 21 - 09:11 PM Willie the Spider became part of my family’s lore. I fell recently and was telling my sister about it. She asked, “Did you fall with a CRASH when you tripped on a lace?” ?? ? I’m 64 and she’s 59. Like others on this thread, I’d love to hear that song and others from the Rainy Day album. |

Subject: Lyrics for ‘50’s kid song “Daniel the Spaniel” ? From: GUEST,Ukantseme Date: 04 Oct 18 - 06:57 PM Daniel the Spaniel - I loved this song in the early-mid ‘50’s - Had the record and played it till it my mother hated it. All I can recall: Bow wow, meow, Oh no, no, not that It’s Daniel the Spaniel and he’s after the cat. There goes that runaway loafer Back to his hideaway Under the sofa. Something about a new hat; chasing a car or a mailman? . . .but I’ll have the last laugh On Daniel the Spaniel ‘Cuz it’s time for his bath I would love to sing this to my grandson, but cannot find the lyrics lost in my memory and time. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Sohmageek Date: 13 Aug 17 - 10:01 PM My wife just talked about hearing these songs from her childhood. I was searching for a way to acquire these songs. I was looking at amazon, then searched youtube... I'm coming up with nothing, not even the 78 archive on archive.org.... Has anyone converted it to digital? Gary do you have he rights to the songs and can redistribute? I'm willing to purchase the album, I just don't have a record player, so digital is always preferred. :) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Tony H Date: 02 Feb 17 - 07:44 AM I stumbled on this Site as I was looking for words to some songs. I still own "Tops in Pops" (orange giraffe) and "Folk songs for kiddies" (yellow giraffe). Santa gave these albums to my two brothers one sister and me back in the 60's. Still have them. Well worn but as I now have a 9 month old grandaughter, We will not lose great songs to this new aged yuppy stuff that is supposed to nurture but I think is ridiculous. The innocent songs on these albums, that I heard and still hum to my grandaughter, will not die off and be lost. Still can't find the written lyrics to them on the internet but I stumble through what I remember until I get a Record Player set up in my new home. I love that Gary, Scotty's son, found this Site. Internet is wonderful! "The Little man" "Animals went to the Park" "The bell that went ting-a-ling-a-ling" Good times... yeah I gotta get the record player set up. |

WILLY THE SPIDER Little Willie the spider wouldn't get out of bed. He Yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head. He had so many legs that it gave him the blues. All he did the whole morning was put on his shoes. By the time he got up and had tied every lace He was so tired & weary it shone in his face When the last shoe was tied up the whole day was done And willy the spider did not have much fun He woke up one morning when it was still dark And tied all his shoes on just for a lark. Subject: ADD: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Guest - The Version AV Pinski sang to his f Date: 04 Mar 15 - 08:22 PM As part of celebrating my Dad's life - I am compiling the lyrics to all the songs he taught and sang to his children and grandchildren. It is interesting to see the "real words" to some of the songs that are so near and dear to my heart. Willy the Spider indeed was an all time favorite. To check my memory, I read through the threads from all the people who posted bits over the past years - thank you! Below is the version that my family sang and will continue to sing, happily, joyfully, and faithfully. Willie the Spider – Pop's Version Little Willy the Spider wouldn't get out of bed. He yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head. He had so many legs that it gave him the blues. All he did the whole morning was put on his shoes. Oh Willy the spider had too many legs. He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs. He got up one morning while it was still dark, He tied all his shoes on just for a lark. He ran down the stairs with a smile on his face, And CRASH he landed when he tripped on a lace. Oh, Willy the spider had too many legs. He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs. So, my little friends, here's a lesson for you: Don't grumble each time that you put on two shoes. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,JT Date: 22 Jun 12 - 09:13 PM It is currently 6:30 PM 22 June 2012 and SOMETHING made me suddenly say to myself "Go on the internet and see if you can find "Willy the Spider" so you can listen to it". Well this thread is the only substantial reference I found and it's interesting to see how many persons have responded. The bizarre thing is -- I only ever heard this song ONE SINGLE TIME. I did NOT have the record when I was a kid. Yet somehow that one hearing was enough to make a big impression on me I never forgot about it. The latter fact and the many replies here indicate it must be a composition having qualities of a caliber beyond the norm ... I heard it one single time on TV. And this was not when I was a little kid. This was later like maybe when I was in college in the early 1970s. I am also 61 years old and it's interesting to see that GUEST of 8 March 12 of my same age listened to it as a preschooler. If this is the case it must have been around some time before I heard it. Yes that's the other question. Exactly when and where I heard it. Yes I think I was no longer a kid. I think it was likely on Captain Kangaroo I happened across one morning killing time. When did he go off the air ...? I remember "Willy the Spider had too many shoes". I didn't remember "tripped on a lace" -- but did so whenI read it here above. The thing I liked most about the song was the rhythm -- a powerful three beat drum between verses. A great song. Maybe relatively hard core for a kid's song. Yes a quality piece of music! So can anybody put it on YouTube?! Enjoyed finding and reading this thread. JT |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Tim Keenan Date: 02 Feb 11 - 03:41 PM I have a copy of "Bob Hannon Sings for Children" on vinyl. I loved the record as a kid, and my children loved it too. I don't know what its copyright status is, but I would be delighted to make MP3's of it available to anyone who is interested. The vinyl is by no means pristine, but it is listenable as far as I remember. "Willy.." may have appeared on other recordings too, but this is the one with "Daniel the Spaniel", "Little Red Caboose", "Bimbo", and "Goin' to Boston" on it. The band on the record was really good, too,as I remember--very cool clarinet and guitar parts. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Willy the Spider (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Gary Date: 28 Jun 09 - 01:01 PM Steve - Scotty MacGregor (Irvine T.) was my dad and as you can imagine, reading about the impressions the lyrics to one of his songs had on you growing up is quite emotional. Willy the Spider was just one of many children's songs my father wrote during the years my brother and I were children ourselves. I am nearly 62 and my brother is 67 and until this very moment I never really fully appreciated the significance of his work. To me, he was always "doing his thing," writing, playing the guitar endlessly and trying to earn a buck. Many of his greatest song-writing accomplishments barely paid the bills, even though at the time performers like The Four Aces, Rosemary Clooney & Oscar Brand were using his material. My father was the consummate example of performers of his time and perhaps today as well. Right up until his death at the age of 92 years old, he was still writing his ideas on paper napkins, the margins of the daily newspaper and any other scrap of paper at his disposal. Incidentally, his inspiration for the name Willy, my uncle Bill, the youngest and last surviving member of my father's family of 5 brothers and sisters. Here's a few other tidbits about my dad that you might find interesting or simply obscure. He and my mom are buried in Tyrone, PA where my mother, Virginia grew up. My dad and Lorne Greene (yes, Bonanza fame) MC'd the Macy's Parade on CBS in the early 50's together. Many of his songs were regularly featured on Captain Kangaroo, as was he himself. He had his own show on CBS called Sergeant Safety, and one of his proudest compositions which never was published was a song he wrote shortly after President Kennedy was assassinated called - I'll Wear That Hat On Monday. Finally, as I recall the chorus to Willy the Spider went like this: Little Willy the Spider wouldn't get out of bed. He yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head. He had so many legs that it gave him the blues. All he did the whole morning was put on his shoes. My brother and I have an extensive array of publications and records that my father did over the course of his life and I'm pretty sure "Willy" is among them. I would be happy to give you a copy or another one of his songs if I can't locate it. Feel free to contact me at gbmac22@aol.com and thanks for keeping my father's work alive. Regards, Gary MacGregor |

Subject: Lyr Add: WILLY THE SPIDER (Scotty MacGregor) From: GUEST,Peg Baker Date: 04 Feb 09 - 09:54 PM WILLY THE SPIDER (Scotty MacGregor) Little Willy the spider wouldn't get out of bed. He yawned the whole morning and scratched on his head. You see, Willy the spider had too many legs. He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs. Well, early one morning while it was still dark, He tried all his shoes on just for a lark. He ran down the stairs with a smile on his face, But he fell with a crash when he slipped on a lace. You see, Willy the spider had too many legs. He had dozens of shoes neatly hung up on pegs. So, my little friends, here's a lesson for you: Don't grumble each time that you put on your shoes. I believe a Jack Harmon sang this and others back in the early 60's or late 50's. He also had a song on the record "Daniel the spaniel" about a mischievous dog.
