There is a musical celebration of Jack's life taking place at the Vernon Arms Spondon Derbyshire on Tuesday 15 March. Organised by his daughter Jody and the local folk club.

Just heard the sad news last night. What a tragic loss of a great singer and friend of over 50 years. We never had a cross word.
This morning his Epiphone Texan is on the settee next to me and will be
played as I remember the great man.

Sorry Al, no idea. I know he had a heart condition, so I’ve assumed it was something to do with that - could be wrong though and, as you say, you can’t help but wonder…

Anyone know what killed Jack? He was a very vociferous anti vax person up until a few months ago.

You can't help but wonder....

Take care yourself, Al - if you need to talk about your diabetes any time, just PM me or send me a FB Messenger. I’m no doctor, but I’ve picked up some info this past fifteen years!

A moving tribute to him by his daughter on the FB page Jody Chowler. I remember Jack telling me he had called her Jody after the Kristoferson song, Jody and the Kid.

Take care Backwoodsman - that's another of us gone!

Jack was a man of very firm convictions, and he didn't mind telling people what his convictions were, even when he was far out of step with popular opinion. But I guess that's what made him the man he was. And his musical talent and knowledge was immense.

Are you still in touch with Tony and Una, and 'Capo di Monty'? I don't know how to get in touch to check if they've heard the sad news.

Thank you very much whoever posted this.
Although Jack and I enjoyed many hours of friendship - lately his various opinions about Covid and god knows what else made chatting with him a bit of a minefield.

Loved the guy though and his music.

That is such sad news. Saw Jack many times before he disappeared from the folk scene, and we booked him several times for our local folk club back in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s. I kept in touch with him through FB until a few years ago.

Jack was a fine writer, guitarist and singer - one of the finest voices, if not the finest voice, to grace the folk & roots scene here in the UK. Sadly, his style of music fell from favour in UK folk clubs during the Trad take-over of the late-‘70s and ‘80s, and his huge talent never got the chance to take him where he deserved to be. I still do several of his great songs, ‘She Likes To Go Walking’ and ‘Driftwood and Nails’ to name but two, and they are always well received.

RIP Jack, for me you were one of the Greats, and you will be sadly missed.

I have Jack's email address, but I'd rather not give it out to people I don't know personally - hope you'll understand.

2014 request

Could you help me contact Jack Hudson? I used to produce and present a radio programme in the 70s called Gentlefolk on BBC Radio Birmingham. I'm now doing a webcast called Gentlefolk2 and I would like to play a track Jack recorded for me back then but I'd like to contact him first. Any help gratefully received. The webcast is www.gentlefolk2.co.uk
Played Curly by Rod Felton in the February edition...
Thanks

Just wondered if anyone knew weather Jack still does live gigs. I'm a new fan and have been loving his "Elvis is alive and well" album. I'm from Chesterfield in Derbyshire and I understand Jack is fairly local to me. This forum has been a great read and I can fully understand why so many people have a great love for his music and respect for the man himself. Thanks in advance folks.

Regards to Jack's Epi Texan,I bought it from him about 6 years ago.Jack has many fans but none greater than me.I'd like to think we have been friends for over 40 years, from when I used to book him for Ludlow folk club.
The Texan now lives in Worcestershire, and doesnt go out too often (I use mainly a Wootton,a Brook Torridge and a 1934 Martin 0-17)but is one of my most treasured possessions and well cared for.I got Brian Willoughby to play it for me a couple of years ago.Brian was with Jack in the Jack Hudson Trio who did a lot of late night work on radio back in the seventies.I had many late night drives with them on the car radio.Happy days

Thanks for mentioning this Jonti.
Always good to hear Brian and Cathryn as well.
There are many "Folkies" who have fond memories of Jack and a great respect for his contribution to the folk/americana scene over many years.
His songwriting is second to none!Half decent guitarist too!

That was a good night at Gainsborough, Malcolm - The Maestro was in exceptionally fine voice! And no, I'd be ashamed of myself if I didn't include at least one of Jack's great songs!

Have travelled many a mile to be at his gigs over the years. From Eastbourne to Gainsborough and points in-between!It was always a real privilege.
No set would be complete without a JH masterpiece would it BW!?

From the dark recesses of memory.....It must have been late '79/early '80 when I stood in for him since I vaguely recall travelling up from Milton Keynes.....I think Jack must have been seriously ill at the time so that somebody (Keith Kendrick??) quickly organised a group of stand-ins for him.
I've looked at his YouTube vids- a couple of tempting songs there.....Ahhh, that voice......

Oh I remember Jack from the days of Derby's 'Peasmouldia' FC- Residents The Lonesome Travellers. 'Rambling' Jack Hudson seemed to have suddenly apeared from nowhere- a couple of floor spots and the next you knew he was gigging. I've still got his 10" first LP somewhere- sold under plain white cover like a bootleg! Sometime back in the '70s I seem to rtemember depping for him at a club in Ilkeston(?). Quite how they hit on me to do the gig is lost in the mists of time but I felt it was an honour.
Keep up the good work Jack. Deserving recognition and getting the recognition you deserve is often a bugger!

Don

It's my favourite too, Jody - so much so that it's in my set-list (along with 'Driftwood and Nails' and 'Alive and Well').

Jack's such a huge talent, it's shameful how he's been ignored by the self-elected Folk Cognoscenti for so long. When you're talking to him next, pass on my best wishes from Gainsborough please.

BTW, was that his old Epi he was playing in the vid?

I wondered about that too BW.
Does he know they are there?
I seem to remember him saying that one of his early LPs was re-released some years ago. It had an entirely different cover and was without his agreement or knowledge. The peeps that published it held the master-tape and he apparently didn't receive any royalties.

"Jack is a member of the EFDSS Board of Directors"

Excellent! Sometimes the best jokes are the ones made innocently (I'm assuming it wasn't a deliberate faux pas, Mitch?).

I hope Jack saw it, I can imagine his comments, not to mention the look on his face!   :-)

Well done Mitch! You caused a certain amount of innocent hilarity.

All Jack's mates were going - ah! yes that would be back in the days when Jack used to stick a trombone up his bum and play the flight of the bumble bee to mass applause. But you know how touchy he is - one night someone said - Jack, its not really folk music...!
