Sorry, Bill/Sables, I missed your report in the other thread, so I have moved it to here:-)

Subject: RE: CATSPAW - GOOD NEWS!!!
From: bill\sables
Date: 21-Jun-01 - 12:32 PM

I've just heard from Connie. Spaw sat up for 1 hour today and had his hair washed with some sort of gel in a bath cap (I wonder if there is some sort of bath cap for his arse) Things seem to be going very well. (looks like he will be around pretty soon. Bill

Here's my initial post to this thread:

The other one was getting long! Anyway, still good news. Here is the latest from Connie:

Just got off the phone with K.
bottom line is he is much improved
the parts to that are:
Schwan-Gantz removed
arterial line removed
vent off by 8a

left central line in
plan to remove chest tube tomorrow
he's hurting, but on good pain meds
sat up for over an hour this a.m.
got his hair washed

On this point K was amazed and impressed. Seems that now they have a shower cap looking thing with some sort of gel in it. They pop it in a microwave, work the gel around a bit, plop it on his head and scrub away all the blood and yuk in his hair from surgery. cool huh

gratefulness to all!
Connie

Good pain meds, huh, while we are all sleepless on pins and needles!! **BG**

Keep up with being a good patient, Spaw, the pretty nurses will be along soon!

Thought this was most apropos in light of the prayers and good wishes we've been sending Spaw of late:

June 18, 2001 (Ivanhoe Newswire)

Clinical studies continue to show prayer heals. Dr. Larry Dossey, author of "Reinventing Medicine" and Prayer is Good Medicine," revealed the results of a second phase study at Duke University on the power of prayer. Dossey was keynote speaker, Saturday in Boulder, Colo. at the annual conference of ISSSEEM (The International Association for the study of Subtle >Energies and Energy Medicine).

The MANTRA project at Duke is headed up by cardiologist Dr. Mitchell Krucoff and nurse practitioner, Susan Craven. The results show that heart patients who receive prayer have 50 percent to 100 percent fewer side effects than those patients not prayed for.

If patients agreed to be part of the study they were randomized and the "prayer" patients' names went to prayer groups around the world. First names only were sent via e-mail to Buddhist groups in Nepal, Hindus in India and Jewish groups in Jerusalem. Catholic nuns, Unity Village Missouri and Protestants in North >Carolina also participated.

The full report on the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the American Journal of Cardiology, according to Dossey. It will be the first time a heart journal has published a study on the effects of "distance" prayer. Dossey also noted hundreds of other studies on the power of prayer that, until now, have been mostly ignored by the allopathic, or traditional medical community. However based on the Duke study Dossey concluded, "There's no going back. This is a huge transition in medicine. Medicine will not be able to retreat from the impact."

So keep those prayers, chants, mantras and good thoughts a-comin! It's doing more good than we may know!

If you're talking with Pat, tell him I have the tennis court booked for 9:15am on Saturday. If he can get over from Ohio in time I can guarantee him a spot in the vistors parking lot which is only a half mile walk from the court.

Very happy for the good news.

All the best,
Dan

LOL, I will pass on your message, Dan, via email. I probably won't speak with him until the end of the week or next. He will love it.

Mountain Dog! Thank you for that article!! My sister used to work as a Telephone Prayer Worker at Unity in MO and has many stories on the power of prayer. She is a Unity minister, now. I will pass that, along with all of the other message to Connie, via email. I think I'll tell her she should buy a ream of paper out of the Spawfund for all these she is printing out for him!

Thanks,

Rick, don't worry. "Schwan Gantz" is OK to remove...It's a "Ganz Scwhantz" removal that would land him in the John Bobbit Addadictomy Recovery Wing. (Thank goodness for my high school German; that post-op report had me worried, too)

I wrote a song last month or so for Larry Dossey, on the subject of Alternative Therapy! -- he's a senior editor on the board of a publication in these parts on the subject -- and it had him ROTFL. So it's only fair he should provide inspiration back to Catspaw! :>

It starts out (to the tune of "In the Jailhouse Now"):

Wal, I knew a nurse named Susy;
She used to be a floozy,
Until she learned about the laying on of hands....

Well, anyway, Larry Dossey loved it.

I thought I'd heard with the traditional type of open heart surgery there's a lot of post op chest pain. My step brother was given a huge pillow to clutch to his chest to help the pain when he had to cough or laugh.

I'm worried that all you people trying to make him laugh are going to cause great pain.

Here's hoping that new DaVinci guy makes it OK to laugh sooner than the old way did. Keep getting better!

Well, he's moved into a new room, has called Connie, and Karen has crashed for some much needed rest. He has a lot of pain in the op site, which is the right side, but is eager to get back online. He and Karen send their love.

I've sent all of the messages, from all of the threads. Connie is still printing, Karen was reading them before she went to sleep. She will take them up to him next visit, so then you all will probably get an earful.

BTW, he and Karen have not been told about the Spawfund. It's a bit delicate, plus Connie wants him to feel more up to par, so she's waiting a few days for the right moment to tell them. By my reckoning, we've got about $900 pledged and the checks are coming into Connie as of today's mail. Thank you all so very, very much. I know it, along with cards and your messages here, plus all of your prayers, mantras, mediations, etc. have been a very important part of how this went for them. We are an incredible community, you know it?! I'll bet even his surgeon could feel that halo of love!

And now for some COMIC RELIEF, a very appropriate joke about a car mechanic, which our Spaw once was, and a heart surgeon. Connie just sent this to me:

A mechanic was removing the cylinder heads from the motor of a car when he spotted in the shop a famous heart surgeon who was standing off to the side , waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his car. The mechanic recognized him, because he had operated on the mechanic's mother.

The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hello Doc! Please come over here for a minute."

The surgeon, surprised, walked over to the mechanic. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked argumentatively, "So doctor, look at this. I also open hearts, take valves out, grind 'em, put in new parts, and when I finish this will work as good as a new one.

So how come you get the big money, when you and me is doing the basically the same work?"

The doctor leaned over and whispered to the mechanic "Try to do it while you keep the engine running."

I have been away for most of the last 12 days with only occasional moments at the computer. No 'Catting time, which sucks by the way. I did manage to send Spaw an E-pistle before he went in. I came in today and read all the updates and all I can say is ...............wheewwwwhhhh. I am glad that it is looking better. Connie has been keeping me informed and I read them all at once. Talk about a harrowing 20 minutes while reading them in order.

Awwwwrrriiighhtteee then, Spaw..........git that woman and them rugrats in the car and come on up to Barry County, Michigan............I will race you across the lake swimming............Wait, no fair.........you got bionics,.................you swim, I will take the Viking with the 150 horse............just to even things up...........and you damn well better be ready on time for FSGW............

Go Spaw Go!! Now, if you can get Karen to stick a couple of those hair-washing bags in her purse, I've got a great business opportunity for you -- Bubbly Butt Bags for your favourite pouch or pussycat -- No muss, no fuss, no hoses, no smashed up toeses -- just pop it in the 'wave, and then on the butt of your fave mammal -- Oh dear, on second thought, this might not bode well for our small furry friends . . . Nope, never mind, I can just hear those gears grinding in your kinky 'magination . . . Oh geezus, what have I done -- the ideas that must be blooming in your wicked, saggy assed mind . . . Forgive me, dear gerbils of the world, I knew not what I did . . . ;-)

Hugs and snogs to you and Karen and the kids, Áine

(and if there's a really cute male nurse that happens to wander into your room, give 'im a squeeze for me, will ya?)

Sure. Just spin that tune from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"'s soundtrack, pump up your spiritual vibes and sing along with me....

A Better Way

Well, I knew a nurse named Suzy

Well, she found her patients healing

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

Now that surgeon, Billy Kazer,

He was handy with his razor.

He would operat e on organs, bones and toes!.

But he did some conscious growing

Found a whole new way of knowing

Now he straightens out their energetic flows!

He's found a better way.

He's found a better way.

With his powers of perception,

He succeeds without deception

He's found a better way.

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

I knew a pharmacist named Sam,

He didn't give a damn.

He used to think that drugs could make you well.

Then he finally got the word

And he started learning herbs,

And he told those druggy salesmen, "Go to hell."

He found a better way

He found a better way

Now he hands out astaxanthin

And the old folks take up dancin'

He got a better way.

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

There was a shrink named Slatter,

He thought people were just matter,

He'd say, "You know, it's all inside your brain."

Then he stepped outside his body

It made the universe look shoddy

And he found out what's behind those funny pains.

He found a better way.

He found a better way.

No more Freudian condemnations,

Now he asks about creations.

It's a better way.

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

There was an old GP named Harry

He used to be quite scary.

He'd hand out pills to everyone in town.

Then he had a revelation.

And he learnedcommunication

Now the patients come to see himjust to hang around!

He found a better way.

He found a better way.

And they think the world of him,

Although his nurses look quite grim,

He's found a better way.

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

There was a candy striper, Nancy

Well, her uniform was fancy

But she thought that giving shots was much too hard,

Well she had an inspiration,

Started practicing mediitation

Now she cures them through their auras

From over fifty yards!

She found a better way,

She found a better way!

When those fields get undistorted

They just heal, she has reported,

Its a better way.

Yodelayeee, yodelaaye, yodeloooooo!

Now I know a doc named Larry

He is far from ordinary

He always knows what goes on behind the scenes.

And he says with some effusion,

There is only one conclusion:

The ghost is twice as big as the machine.

He's found a better way.

He's found a better way.

So if you're going to treat the whole,

Don't forget to see the soul,

'Cuz it's a better way.

It's a better way

it's a be--ett--er wa---yyyy!

CamiSu was not the only person to notice that bit about "blood and yuk in his hair." Nosiree! They were supposed to operate on his heart! Question: is he acting particularly nice? Has he made any jokes, even semi-incoherent ones about passing gas? I'm concerned.

Please keep a close eye on him. If, once the meds wear off, he still drools more than usual or says he wants to learn the banjo, I'd be worried that they snuck in a bit of unplanned minor surgery. That DaVinci thing sound awful sneaky, and it would be too easy to go in through a nostril and...oh, it's too horrible to think about!

(Love ya, Spaw. Heal fast!)

You can email them to me Mary and I can pass them on via Connie, but I don't think he's up to snuff for jokes quite yet. This is the latest from Connie:

Just talked to P again he fell asleep on the phone mid-sentence. The op site hurts but he says he can tell a difference in the way his chest feels --not so "big".

He is not recooped yet but i think he is doing real well for about 30 hr post op.

I'm so glad to hear that all's well. My brother's been through two "valve jobs" first one was pig, the second mechanical. Wet fone lines here = bad lines = static = getting knocked offline every 3 minutes... so I just keep praying, and . . . just remember, da Vinci or not, healing from surgery and being in the hospital is a big job.... to hold that all that love and concern without letting worrying creep into it is a tall order but then, this IS the Mudcat.

I very happy to hear the continuing good progress and best wishes to Pat, Karen and the 'Spawlings.

It's just as well that it was Pat's cardiovascular system rather than his digestive system. Specially as there's a big heart beating there. There are (yes it's really true folks!) several instances of operating theatres being wrecked when the surgeon's cauterising tool or laser scalpel came into contact with an endogenous source of explosive gas from the patient.

Just one worry, I hope it was the DaVinci device the surgeon implanted and he didn't pick up the DiCaprio by mistake!

For when you're able to laugh Pat:

Q. What's the difference between a haemotologist (sorry about the European spelling!) and a venereologist?

A. A haemotologist just pricks your finger!

We miss you 'Spaw

To me that means he is healing............LOL. I asked him if he wasn't taking this "Layabout" thing just a little too far.

Seriously, he sounds like he is hurting, but very happy that he had this done. The prognosis is good, it looks like the operation was successful, and soon we will have our irrascible and lovable Catspaw back with us again. And if all goes well, he will be at FSGW in the fall. You won't want to miss that one. Now...............I can breathe.............I have been very, very nervous over all this. I do love this man........Good friend.........They are so hard to come by. Well, you ole saggy assed tortoise, I don't know whether it was all them cute lil beating hearts or your own tough, lovable self that inspired me; but, here's a lil song I wrote jus' fer you . . . ya buggah ;-)

It's In His Heart
(words by Áine Cooke)

How do we value a man, after all?
Why do we love him, and answer his call?
Oh, where do we look for the mark of his worth?
Or the reason that he is here, walking this earth?

It's in his heart,
It's in his heart,
There's no other place to start,
It's in his heart.

Can you sum up a man by the coin that he holds?
Or whether he's young, whether he's old?
Have you ever pondered the compass that guides
him to follow the straight path, wherever it lies?

It's in his heart,
It's in his heart,
There's no other place to start,
It's in his heart.

(Bridge)
Oh, look in his eyes, they're bright and they're true,
No matter what colour, they're looking at you,
And what do you see, when you look deep inside?
A man full of love, honour and pride.

It's in his heart,
It's in his heart,
There's no other place to start,
It's in his heart,

It's in his heart,
It's in his heart,
A soul that cannot be torn apart,
It's in his heart.

I love you, 'Spaw -- Áine

Aine! That's two in two days! I am running out of tissues, womon!! Beautiful, just beautiful!

I just spoke to Connie. Told her about the beating hearts. Here's the latest; I cannnot believe modern medicine...he may actually go home, at least as far as Connie's, by Sunday!!!

Here ya go:

Drs. have been in they believe pain is from chest tube; need to leave chest tube in longer as there is still enough drainage to warrent it.

P on 2 different pain meds; they will begin staggering the doses so that he can even out more on pain and alertness...basically right now if he's not hurting he's sleeping and if he is awake he is hurting but then he can't go back to sleep because he is hurting until the next dose.

K says he looks so much better - skinny ankles, good color in face and lips.

It is possible, depending on how the next 2 days go that he COULD be discharged from the hospital as early as Sun. 24 jun 01

Connie's email hung in there during the fast and furious critical time, but yesterday it locked up on her and now she is not receiving any email, though I've received what she has sent out to me. She says it will do this, then the next day she'll get two or three days worth, all at once. So, I am still sending your messages and Karen had taken a big batch up and read them to him. Here's what she said about that:

K took the messages up last night and started reading them to him, which he enjoyed very much. He was quite touched with your kind words. K is so touched by all your concern and all that you are doing.

So, I am giving thanks for his continued improvement, a great lessening of pain, and an easy transfer to home, BUT MOST OF ALL, I give thanks that he made it through!!

I'm going to try and draw this image which came into my mind this morning as I lay in bed thinking about the 'Spaw family situation.

So just picture this as a cartoon strip:

[Frame 1] A rear view of a man in a backless hospital gown, walking along a hospital corridor.

[Frame 2] A close-up rear view of the naked behind. Two burly policemen have suddenly appeared, looking straight at it. One says: "I'm gonna bust your ass!". The other one says: "Anything you say can and will be used against you in court."

[Next frame] Close-up view again of the naked behind: "BRAWWWMMMPPPPP!!!"

What do you think? Don't give up my day job? Oh, well, okay then.

Ah, kytrad, that is so sweet, he'll love that.

JP, I talked to him right after your call, so there is no rest for the windy!:-) He sounded really good. He did say a lot of the pain comes from the fact that they cut through muscles instead of bone as when they crack the chest open. I can sympathise; muscle pain hurts more than a break in my experience.

Karen was there, too, so I got to speak with her. She sounded good but a little worn-out. She and the four boys, their two and Connie's and Wayne's slept out in the camper last night, but didn't actually go to sleep until 4am, as they sat up telling bawdy jokes, guy stuff and they loved her joining in. I'll let her tell you about Mr. Balzac, when she gets a chance. They were having such a hoot, Connie had to holler out the window at midnight to pipe down! Lot of nervous energy to let go, I'll bet.

She said everytime the surgeon comes by he is just really pleased. Today, Spaw has shown dramatic improvements, almost by the hour. She said his colour was better the minute she first saw him in ICU and just keeps getting better.

They are restricting his fluids as a routine matter, getting rid of all the junk circulating from surgery and they have him on low-fat, low-sodium diet, which he is not happy about. He told me he couldn't eat in there!**BG**

Anyway, if he does go home tomorrow, it will be to Connie and Wayne's, as C&W have decided they need to keep an eye on him and help Karen out just a bit more before he tackles the more stairs at home and stuff. So, could be a few more days before he gets back online.

He said to tell everyone hello, thanks very much and he loves us. Karen says the same.

Phew! Something about actually hearing his voice, makes it really seem true; this wonderful science and the remarkable people associated with it have saved him. WOW!

I've been out of town and am just now catching up here at MUDCAT. Great news! Keep up the good (and hard) work, Spaw! May your healing be swift!

Wow! What a picture this is....All these people, from all over the world, most of whom have never met face to face, joining together for Spaw's healing. Spaw, KNOW that you are loved! KT

Amos Amos Amos! Trying to put Spaw right back in the ICU!? Spaw... Law school put about 60lbs on me, that and middle age spread, I looked in the mirror and quoted Alexi Sales ("Who's that fat bastard!") My clorestral was up, blood pressure up, and I was headed for troble. I came up with a great diet, tea and frute salad for breakfast and greek salad for dinner, soups that were the equivelant of greek salad in the winter and for a change, lost 90 pounds in about 4 months and have kept it off for years now. I feel great, and am wearing clothes from when I was in High School, Fact is, what ever pleasure you get from a big steak, the cost in feeling like hell out wieghs it real soon. Nice spicy salad, low fat proteens, low carb diet and you'll feel like a teenager again.
Take care of yerself! Get your kicks off music and other less distructive vices, so we can keep you around and sinning, old chum!
RABBITT FOOD! The wave of the future!
Larry

When he gets home you can give him some of that mouth to mouth resuscitation, good for the country, good for the nation, nothing quickens your respiration like a little old bit of that sweet sensation that mouth to mouth (gasp) resuscitation... Glad to hear you're going home, bud! Beat a heart for me, wouldja, O elf?

You'll get used to the low fat, low sodium crap diet Pat! (I had to, blood pressure through the roof six months ago probably largely due to ultra-stress job bollix nonsense according to my cardio but thankfully back to normal now). Trouble is a lot of this rabbit food makes you fart even more! Does Karen know about this?

Glad to hear things are improving rapidly and hope to see you back here before too long. We miss you.

All my very best,

mooman

Pat,

I (we) just got home from a week in the woods on a lake on the Ohio/Michigan/Indiana border. Rained the whole time except for two days that were over 90 degrees. On the hottest day, the old saying "SHIT HAPPENS" became a profundidy when the holding tank on the trailer self-destructed. Ten gallons of Chlorox later (and after a deluge lasting 24 hours) I thought it best that we come home. The aroma is with me yet and I suspect I'll remember it whenever I need to do that. I just deleted 49 spam e-mails and printed out the one personal note from Dan Keding.-----------And now I find out about your problems.

Fell good soon !!!!!

Charming story, Art. Thank you for sharing! And I thought I had it bad when Ed the cat got jealous of the pregnant Alice and urinated on my couch. At least I could just pitch the couch - 12 years and multiple teenagers, it's days were numbered anyway. Yes, Spaw. I took in another stray and this time got took. Little bitty kitty is full of little bitty kitties. I am a nervous wreck but she took my mind off you for a few minutes every day. I am so relieved that you are well again. Miss you, guy.

Hey, Spaw, glad to hear you're getting better! But just be not to pinch too many bottoms...unless it belongs to Karen of course....or else she might want to keep you in the hospital.....

BTW I'll be thinking on you when I go see Emmylou Harris next weekend.....

Has anyone heard if 'Spaw is indeed going to leave the hospital today? The fact that anyone even thought it remotely possible still has me in wonderment. Our modern medicine is such a difference from what we had even ten years ago!

Haven't heard anything, yet, Banj. I think whichever of us does, probably ought to start a new thread, though!**BG**
