Subject: Lyr Add: WHITE DRESS (Swarbrick/McTell) From: Noreen Date: 24 Jun 01 - 07:00 PM Here you are, Eric, courtesy of a friend's CD. WHITE DRESS (Swarbrick/McTell) Feel how the wind blows, December despair. Bring me a ribbon to tie back your hair. You stayed by my side, you've gone where I've gone. Don't cling to the past, love, while time's moving on. CHORUS: Come and kiss me; it's gonna be all right. Put on your white dress and I'll take you dancing tonight All of my sorrows are none of your cares. Come from the window; tread soft on the stairs. While life is in us, let's love all we can. If you'll be my woman then I'll be your man. CHORUS And if you get weary, I'll sing you this song. And if you feel lonely, I'll show you you're wrong. The night's in your face, the sky's in your eyes And the morning's before us; lets dance 'til sunrise. CHORUS As sung by Ralph McTell on 'A collection of his love songs' CD NK |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHITE DRESS (Dave Swarbrick) From: Noreen Date: 24 Jun 01 - 06:51 PM WHITE DRESS (Dave Swarbrick)
Feel how the wind blows, December despair
Chorus:
The night's in your face, the sky's in your eyes
Come from the window, let's climb the stairs
As sung by Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention, recorded on "Rising For The Moon" (Island ILPS 9313), September 1974, released as a single 1975.
'White Dress'… is Swarb the writer at his most tender and poignant. This beautiful recording is very economical, with Sandy's vocals lovingly embellished by the song's author on viola, mandolin and autoharp. (From notes accompanying 'Fiddlestix' compilation CD, the best of Fairport 1972-1984) NK |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McTell version of White dress. From: Eric the Viking Date: 24 Jun 01 - 12:17 PM Yes, according to various bio's McTell and Swarbrick co-wrote the song. It is on the album love grows and also a collectors edition of "Ralph McTell, a collection of his love songs". Thanks for trying Cheers Eric |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McTell version of White dress. From: Noreen Date: 22 Jun 01 - 02:34 PM Where is that info from, Hazel? The original song appears on Fairport's "Rising For The Moon" (Island ILPS 9313), recorded September 1974, attributed to Swarbrick http://www.musikfolk.com/expletive-delighted/45-whitedress-tears.htm (the officially sanctioned Fairport site). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McTell version of White dress. From: nutty Date: 22 Jun 01 - 02:27 AM The information I have is that the song was co-written by Swarbrick and McTell in 1975 and recorded by McTell on Slide Away The Screen in 1978/9 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McTell version of White dress. From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 01 - 08:52 PM And I can't find the McTell words anywhere, sorry, Eric. I tried Google, but no use. Maybe someone has a recording? All I can remember is "I'll take you dancing tonight." Noreen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: McTell version of White dress. From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 01 - 07:14 PM I couldn't find it in the DT, Eric? I think it should be posted here if it isn't already. Nutty, that link is to the original lyric, written by Swarb for Sandy Denny, and the one Eric already has (they are incorrect in attributing that to McTell). Ralph McTell loved the song and wanted to sing it so changed the words to be from a man's perspective...don't know them though. Noreen |
