Vectris, as promised I'm posting the version of the song that I sang at the Wellington (apt eh!) in Seaford on Friday.

THE SKIVVY

When I was a skivvy at the Wellington Hotel,
The master and the missus they treated me right well
Till alng came a sailor, a sailor from the sea
And that was the start of my misery,

He asked me for a candle to light him to his bed
He asked me for a pillow to rest his weary head
And then he said jump in and keep me warm
An I jumped in thinkin he meant no harm
Early the next morning he gave me a five pound note
Take that me darlin for the damage I have wrought
Take that me darlin for the damage I have done
If it be a daughter or if it be a son

If it be a daught er then bounce her on your knee
If it be a son send the bugger off to sea
Dress him in a suit of white and navy blue
Teach him to climb the rigging as I have done with you

Down came the piss-pot upon the sailor's head
Take that you bastard for doing me in bed
Take that you bastard for doing what you done
And your "if it be a daughter or if it be a son"

Now all fair maidens let this a warning be
Never let a sailor get an inch above yr knee
Cos if you do he'll never never rest
Till he's ruffled all the feathers in your old crows nest!

Nice to see you in person at last
Jude

If you put #319 in the blue DigiTrad search box, you'll see we have 6 versions of this song - but this version is quite different. the version I'm familiar with is "Home Boys, Home. Jude, where's this version from?

It's a track from a recording of the Song and Ale weekend (which is still going) about 10-15 years ago. A friend played it to me thinking (correctly) that it was a song that I might want to sing. As soon as I heard it I had to learn it. Jude

Thanks Jude have got that extra verse which will fit into my version nicely.
Nice to meet you at last, see you in the Middle Bar in August.
Was it the Pennymoor Song and Ale or another one?
Hope you enjoyed the night. If you did come down and visit us again next year.

Mary

No it was the Whittlebury, up near Silverstone Racetrack. And yes I enjoyed the evening, and must make the effort to come back again sometime. Although when is another matter as it's an hour and a half or more drive which is a bit much for an evening out.

Forgot to mention The Song and Ale is run by Tom and Barbara Brown. They have recorded all the sessions in the barn for the last 20 years or so and each year select about 4 dozen songs from the weekend, edit them together and put them on a couple of tapes. They have a list of what's on all the tapes from past years and you can buy what you want - if you want an older tape they may need some warning so they can record you a copy from their master. All the singers are told that if for some reason they don't want their perfomance to be on the sale tapes let Tom know and he'll ensure it's exclusion. There are no paid performers, those who go are both the singers(unaccompanied) and the audience, everyone is assigned a task (something like peeling potatoes or a couple of hours on the gate) It's been going a long time, it's fun and seems to work. Sounds like fun. I'll bring a candle or two to stick on the cake.
