Subject: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 26 Jun 01 - 02:40 PM For some time I've fantasized about having my own website, but held off because of costs and (lack of) programing expertise. Help is at hand! I ran into a service that provides 50 megs of space for nothing. Sure, there will be advertising on it. You didn't think it would be FREE (as in no quid pro quo) free, did you? You can, for a low fee, sign up for advertising-less space, and you can, again for a low fee, get more space. AS to the programing expertise, they provide a site builder program that simplifies all that. And if you have HTML competence you can design everything yourself or modify what their site builder does. Oh, and you don't have to pay for a domain name. I'm looking forward to building the site over the next weeks (and probably months). It will have pictures of me and my instruments, possibly tablature, sound clips, a guest book, a coming-events calendar for me and for folk music stuff around Indianapolis, and who knows what else I'll think of? Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 26 Jun 01 - 04:21 PM Sounds good. 50Megs is a new high. Most of these services are a lot less. The most I had heard about up to this notice, was 10Megs. Good for you, Dave. Can't wait. |
Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: katlaughing Date: 26 Jun 01 - 05:00 PM I wish I'd know you were looking, Dave. Tripod has been offering 50mgs FREE for quite a long time. I learned about them from Jon Freeman and have had several sites up on there for about a year and a half. They've got the ready-made, too, as well as do your own with html. I look forward to seeing yours. kat |

Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: Bill D Date: 26 Jun 01 - 06:52 PM well, Fortune City offers 100megs, but they 'have' been slow...(the old original Mudcat album is still up there. I keep thinking I'll use the space for something |
Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: pavane Date: 27 Jun 01 - 02:33 AM I have had various free sites, but there were problems. One site added pop-ups which stopped my MP3's from being accessed (don't know why), and my replacement site had problems with download of more than 200kb. So be warned! |
Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: IvanB Date: 27 Jun 01 - 11:15 AM I guess I could say that I subscribe to the BillD theory of web site development. I've had a site at fortunecity for about 8 months, and I do the minimum to keep it active (at least one access every 60 days and a file changed now and then). My first thought was to put up music from Mudcat concerts if the performers agreed, but it became obvious that with our travel schedule some would get slighted and I dropped that idea. I keep thinking I'll use it for something one of these days. It's certainly not in a state where I'd invite lookers. Fortune City seems to load fast enough for me. My main problem is that, although they state 5mB is the size limit for a single file, my files seemed to mysteriously disappear if they even approached 4mB. When you've uploaded a file that big on a 45K connection, it's just a bit irritating to have it take a powder. |
Subject: RE: Gonna have a web site--FOR FREE From: GUEST,Knappo Date: 27 Jun 01 - 12:47 PM A web host a friend of mine uses is from Doteasy.com 20MB storage, unlimited e-mail, no banners, but you do need to accept a e-mail ad or some such thing from them every day. $18.00 to registar domain name. I am also looking into doing a web page for our trio and don't know jacks--t about how to do it. A web search seems to offer a number of choices. Hopefully, this thread will help to narrow down the field. Good luck and let us know how it turns out the address you end up with. Knappo |
