I've been working on a birthday program for Woody Guthrie for Saturday July 14, at 4:00PM EST on the Toledo Folk Music Group on Paltalk, with recorded and live music and comments and stories on Woody's life. Also plans for a Pete Seeger tribute are going forward with four people from Mudcat joining me. Anyone else interested E mail me at [e-mail] and give me a list of songs you would like to sing. One of the events at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival this year will be a workshop tribute to Woody and Pete with Sarah Lee Guthrie (Woody's grandaughter), Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (Pete's grandson), Johnny Irion, Anne Hills and Rik Palieri.

Here's an idea whose time has come. Let's make July 14th, Woody Guthrie's Birthday, an UNOFFICIAL national holiday. Let's not bother with acts of Congress or Presidential proclamations. Just take the day off from work. And if anyone asks why why, tell the truth. I'm taking the day off because it's Woody Guthrie's Birthday. Maybe we can even turn this into Folksingers' Day, the way George Washington's Birthday evolved into Presidents' Day.

July 14th is also La Fête Nationale de La France (Bastille Day), all the more reason to take it off. Et M. Regenstreif à la Belle Province de Québec, Woody Guthrie's Birthday can be an international holiday. It need not be confined to the USA and France. The whole world can take the day off. So go ahead and tell the boss "Vive l'anniversaire Woody!"
