Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 10:53 AM Sheila - I'm not very good at "hearing" sol fa notation - but if anyone hasn't identified this for you by the time I get back from the sixteenth century I'll take a shot at this... |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: SharonA Date: 06 Jul 01 - 10:59 AM What do the Roman numerals mean? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Matt_R Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:00 AM I believe they are chord symbols, I IV V, pretty much standard chord structure for a song. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:02 AM she is giving us the notes, then the rhythm, then the chords for each line |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: davidg Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:11 AM What degree of the scale is "ta"? Also - major or minor mode? Is it in 3 or 4 or some other meter? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Mrrzy Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:13 AM At least it's in do re mi, and not EGC or something. I can do this, but I don't recognize the tune... any lyrics? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Matt_R Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:14 AM Aren't "ta" and "ti" vocables for a sixteenth-note rhythm? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:39 AM Thanks for such speedy responses. It's 3/4 time, major key. The roman numbers are the chords. In the key of C, it would be: e e (12 3) g a (12 3) c g, (12 3) a, c (1 23). Ever hopeful, Sheila. Another way to write the melody would be 3 3/ 5 6/ 1 5,/ 6/1. Am I making any sense? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:04 PM here's what I get...(which could be wrong...)

Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:13 PM Would Jc's experimental page find it by putting in the first few bars as ABC? Or if you translate more of it to notes (C will do) then it might be recognizable Roger |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:23 PM Here's what jc's suggests. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:33 PM Hmmmm, its the first time I've tried it and I got the same MMario - not sure exactly how it picked them??? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:42 PM I wanted to have a look at the music but I am getting an error when I copy the ABC you posted MMario so I knocked the last bit off and I can open it now - still don't know the tune though sorry |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 12:45 PM for some wierd reason it gave 11/2 for the last note the end should be E6|| |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 01:48 PM I am SO impressed! This is all quite new to me and far beyond my capabilities. From I can figure out, what is X? T=title? M=meter? Q=? K=key? Letters=notes. numbers=beat value? Small c (if key=C)= "do?" I agree, last E should =6 if not 12. It's all repeated with the final note on "do." What are all those red numbers in columns? Is there a guide for computer dummies in plain SIMPLE English??? Ever hopeful, Sheila |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 06 Jul 01 - 01:52 PM Sheila, I listened to the midi MMario posted and I don't recognize the song. I wish I could help you with the Midi2TExt Program, but I forgot how I started with it! I think if you click on the link above, you can figure it all out. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:00 PM Sheila - if you go the the Newcomers guide and FAQ - (top thread on the forum page - it will link you to stuff about the ABC format. it is a good way to transmit tunes in text (up to a certain complexity) theres lots of other stuff in there as well. *grin* even (some of ) those of us who have been around quite a while admit to using it as a reference the red stuff is miditxt - which is a way for us to transmit midi files via text messages - and the link that is built in will explain how to use it. I don't think anyone can really "read" the miditxt. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: mg Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:13 PM if the high tech stuff doesn't work, can you leave it as a message on your answering machine and selectively give out your phone number as pm's to interested parties. mg |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:26 PM Mary, what is "pm's?" (I am VERY new to all this.) |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:34 PM OK, "personal message?" I'm reading the FAQs. Should have done that before. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: MMario Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:47 PM yeah - there's a lot of stuff here...a great deal to absorb quickly - a great deal to absorb slowly as well! And to be perfectly honest, some stuff you'll probably just want to scrape off your shoes before you track it into the house. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Jul 01 - 02:57 PM I've heard Burns' Ae Fond Kiss sung to pretty much that tune, though it's not the usual melody (Rory Dall's Port). I rather think it's Hi Oro 'S Na Horo Eile... |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Jul 01 - 03:29 PM Keith Norman MacDonald (The Gesto Collection of Highland Music, 1895) prints a set of Hi Oro 'S Na Horo Eile, with two variants of the tune. With the first he gives, beside John MacLean's Gaelic, the text of Burns' Ae Fond Kiss. Ossian recorded the song with that melody, though they finished on a rather than f (as in your example, given that mine is in f and yours in c), giving it a more melancholy feel. Donal Óg is sung to a variant of the same tune. Click Here for a midi of the tune as printed in Gesto: see what you think. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 08:12 PM Dear Malcolm, It's amazingly similar tho the ending is different. Also, I remember it being much slower. Is Ossian a group with recordings? What is Donal Og? Might this song have been used in some film? I heard no lyrics. Ever hopeful, Sheila |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Jul 01 - 08:46 PM Ah; when people say "song", that usually means to me a tune with words; I gather that "song" is often used to mean "tune" in some places, though. Ossian was a Scottish band, active originally in the '70s and 80s; Ae Fond Kiss, the tune of which I suspect you would recognise straight away if you heard it (it's very slow, and ends on an unresolved note as I described), was on their first album, Ossian (Springthyme SPR 1004, 1977); it's available now on CD, and the band itself is back together and working again. Presumably, then, it was an instrumental version of the melody that you heard? The tune, in various forms, is as I said used for a number of songs in Scotland and Ireland, for example: Ae Fond Kiss The tune given with the file is the one Burns set it to, Rory Dall's Port, which, though it seems to be related, is not quite the one that we're talking about. Donal Og Text; one of a number of translations into English. Donal Og A midi of one version of the tune. Hi [H]Oro 'S Na Horo Eile Text only, but it goes with the tune I linked to in my last message. All this doesn't tell you where you heard the thing, of course, but it may help someone else to put their finger on a film, or whatever. And if not; well, at least you know things you didn't know before! Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 06 Jul 01 - 10:41 PM Malcolm, I know a LOT more now, and I think the MIDI of "Hi Oro" you blue clicked is close enough to assure me I didn't make up the whole thing. Gratefully, Sheila. Do you think it might be available on a CD anywhere? |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 06 Jul 01 - 11:41 PM Try this brief soundclip : Ossian: Ae Fond Kiss |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 07 Jul 01 - 12:37 PM Malcolm - I tried the sound clip but it didn't come through. Thanks a heap for trying, and to all you others for responding. I don't know where I ever heard this but I'm glad to know it's there. Thanks all. If you ever have any enlightenment, I'll always be appreciative. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: GUEST,Sheila Date: 09 Jul 01 - 09:10 AM THANK YOU! all for helping. You set off a light bulb, Malcolm, and I dug up a tape I made a few years ago from a 1959 Scottish Broadcasting Co. tribute to Robt. Burns, "Immortal Memory" which was aired by Robert Sherman on "Woody's Children." There it was, "Ae Fond Kiss" sung by either Kenneth McKellor, Ian Wallace, Peter Mellon or Alistair McCard. Are these well-known Scottish singers? I still don't know the melody, probably it is "Hi Horo..." but I will explore that Ossian CD. Thank you again and again. Sheila |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 09 Jul 01 - 09:35 AM Certainly Kenneth McKellar (very well-known indeed in his time, and by no means forgotten) recorded Ae Fond Kiss in 1959, so it was probably him. |
Subject: RE: Haunted by a song From: Noreen Date: 09 Jul 01 - 10:42 AM Interesting. Malcolm, the Ossian clip above uses the only tune I've ever heard to Ae Fond Kiss. I heard it first from Bobby Eaglesham with 5 Hand Reel. Any chance of submitting this (Hi Oro 'S Na Horo Eile) to the DT, to add to Ae Fond Kiss as an alternative tune to Rory Dall's Port? |
