Shoulda known... Apparently most of the Popeye characters were based directly on real people that the writer of the comic was acquainted with! That was a surprise. He modeled Wimpy on his boss, and Popeye on a local tough guy who was small and wiry, but a very formidable fighter even against much bigger opponents. How about that! - LH |

He also used to sign off his very funny magazine feature column with "copulator" which sounds like an Oz-ism, "cop (i.e. catch) you later". Helen |

I liked Wimpy....a real hard nose scrounger of the first order...my kind of guy. I'll tell you this, but don't let it get around...........I think I am one of only 9 people on the entire planet who admits to like that gawdawful "Popeye" movie. Talk about your complete tripe!!!! But for some odd reason I enjoy that stupid movie, especially the first 45 minutes. I think it's related to some genetic malfunction where out of the blue you like something when all of your senses tell you to run screaming into the night. I hate kung-fu movies and Schwarzenegger type action flicks and yet for some unfathomable reason, I'll tune in on that complete asshole Steven Seagal ANYTIME! I can't believe it myself and I have no idea why I watch! I think ol' Neil Young is tied up in the same problem. I really don't care for him and will tune out on acoustic stuff, but I can't resist watching him as a rocker. I can never figure out whether he's playing that Les Paul or screwing it! Spaw |

I consider it one of the neatest movies of all time. And I'm not sure why, but I do think the gal that played Olive Oyle (was it Shelley Duvall?) was just amazing as that character, and the rest were pretty darn good too. I also loved Howard the Duck! I went to see it 3 times! I have never met anyone else who even admits to having seen it. This is not so weird as you may think. I have loved comics all my life, and I knew the Popeye comics and the Howard the Duck comics (by Marvel) very well. This naturally gives me an angle on the movies in question that someone else may not have. Steven Seagal? Get the barf bag...BLUEEUUGGHHHHH! I like Schwarzenneger. - LH |

It was at 6:00 on WFIL-TV, Channel 6 in Philadelphia. The host was Sally Starr, a blonde in a cowgirl outfit, who I later found out was often soused on the set. (Fortunately, as a 6-year-old I didn't have a lot of experience with alcoholics, so I never figured that part out.) I LOVED those Popeye cartoons! Except for the Goons, those big guys with the long noses and fur around their wrists and ankles.....they really gave me the creeps! The movie? Guess I'll have to give it another try. I think what makes the Popeye movie fascinating (not necessarily good) is they went back and tried to capture the flavor of the original comic strip. The early Fleischer Brothers, black and white Popeye cartoons were the best with the great animation and funny dialog. The one-plot Popeyes of the fifties and sixties were criminally bad. |

Wellington Wimpy. Back when the mists of antiquity, when I was listening to the late afternoon radio serials (Jack Armstrong, Captain Midnight, etc.), there was a short lived attempt at Popeye, and the voices stuck in my mind. Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall were spot-on with their characterisations, but the actor who played Wimpy didn't get the character at all. Much too rough around the edges. The voice and style of expression I remember on the radio and in movie cartoons was a dead ringer for W. C. Fields (it may even have been Fields doing a voice-over). After all, Wimpy did make an attempt to come off as a cultivated gentleman. He was just suffering a long bout -- a very long bout -- of finacial embarrassment. I found the portrayal of Wimpy in the movie -- well -- fruskerating! Don Firth |

The movies that really frustrapate me are the ones which are utterly unfaithful to the original in an attempt to pander to the presumed present styles and tastes of North American 13-year-olds...like Disney's Jungle Book or Winnie-the-Pooh efforts, for example. Did you know that the premise that spinach made you strong was based on a printing mistake. A publication, maybe a newspaper, printed a list of sources of iron in foods and added an extra digit to the spinach amount, so instead of a small amount like 1.x, it ended up being something like 21.x. So the whole idea of Popeye and his spinach was based on one little typo. I like the "I yam what I yam" philosophy too. I'm really fond of the Roger Rabbit movie too - yes, I know it wasn't based on "real" cartoon characters, but I love it. Drop Dead Fred is another cartoony-movie that I love, too. Helen |

She said it was the shoes.As soon as she put them on she went straight into Olive.She hadn't rehearsed the part and had no idea what she was going to do.Once the shoes were on she went with the flow and got the part.
