Subject: Lyr Add: WIZARDS (Alfred Noyes) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Jul 01 - 04:52 PM Well, you'll find Alfred Noyes' poem in any number of anthologies. I haven't checked how far Phil Ochs modified it. Not much I think.
Here's another poem by Alfred Noyes, which isn't so well known, but should be. I stuck a tune to it and it makes a good song.
Wizards
There's many a proud wizard
There's many a magician
There's many a crafty alchemist
I think the way the poet evokes a homecoming from a sea-voyage in those last four lines, all in pictures, not a single verb or direct statement - it is absolutely miraculous. I can't think of anything to touch it.
1880-1859, poet, playwright, novelist and anthologist, who held violently anti-Modernist view on literature." (Oxford Companion to English Literature)
Good man!
