Subject: Jones and Leva - Go see 'em From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Jul 01 - 05:23 AM You yanks have a lot to answer for - CocaCola, McDonalds, Baseball caps... But I forgive you coz of one export in particular, namely Carol Elizabeth Jones and James Leva. I should have posted this on Tuesday beacuse they were on at our club on Monday night, and what a night we had! Old-timey country with skill, precision and FUN. Both play guitar very well. Both sing brilliantly and provide wonderful harmonies. James adds the icing by playing fiddle as well. I would even go so far as to make them honorary Lancastrians;-) They are in the UK for a while - Darn sarf for a while I believe and then back oop north next month. Managing the tour is Irishman, currently resident in Lancashire, Donal McGuire. If Donal is with them and does a 'spot' it makes it doubly good - coz he's pretty damn good himself. Do it - find them! If anyone has the tour details perhaps they could post them in the 'whats on' thread? Cheers Dave the Gnome |
Subject: RE: Jones and Leva - Go see 'em From: Bluebelle Date: 12 Jul 01 - 08:48 AM I discovered Carol Elizabeth Jones last year on a cd with Hazel Dickens and Ginny Hawker, called Heartsingers. It's a wonderful cd!!!! Then, I discovered Jones and Leva. Both of their writing, picking, and singing is awesome. Leva seems to be able to play anything with strings and Jones is a wonderful rhythm guitar player. My favorite Jones and Leva cd is Light Enough To Find My Way. I've not had the pleasure of seeing them live and look forward to the day. |
Subject: RE: Jones and Leva - Go see 'em From: chip a Date: 12 Jul 01 - 10:47 AM Saw them in Dahlonega, Georgia this spring. They gave a little workshop on old time music. Also a concert. They're worth going far out of your way to see! Not only are they talented, they seem to be awful nice folks. Chip A. |
Subject: RE: Jones and Leva - Go see 'em From: BanjoRay Date: 12 Jul 01 - 06:29 PM For me, they were the stars of the Conwy bluegrass festival last weekend. James Leva's fiddle playing is very reminiscent of Tommy Jarrel and the other Round Peak fiddle players - but I'm a banjo player, what do I know? They made beautiful harmonies on traditional old time and also self-penned tunes. They gave me the impression that I was listening to the real thing, and not many can do that. They did a workshop about their style and methods, which was well worth seeing - the stories about old-timers were great. Cheers |

Subject: RE: Jones and Leva - Go see 'em From: GS Date: 12 Jul 01 - 07:12 PM Sounds darned good - does anyone know if they have a website (which would presumably include tour info)? I know they were playing (unless my imagination has been playing overtime) out at Hale End tonite - which unfortunately I missed :-( |
