Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: bobby's girl Date: 19 Jul 01 - 07:58 PM In the Royal Navy, there is a particular rank - I think its Petty Officer - which has an anchor as a badge of office. Consequently they get known as killicks because thats another name for an anchor. Hence the killick of the mess is the petty officer in charge of the mess |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Brían Date: 18 Jul 01 - 11:50 PM Yeah, Jeri, I concur with Naem'. That melody sounds about what I remember Tom singing. 'course that goes way back to the Swedenborgian song swaps we had donkeys ages ago.Good work all of you. 'catters never cease to amaze me. Brían. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 18 Jul 01 - 04:42 PM Jeri, it's pretty close. Some notes are slightly different but that's to be expected. For Jenny, it's sung with enthusiasm and verve! Lots of both! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: ChanteyMatt Date: 18 Jul 01 - 03:44 PM The song is a big favorite at the song circles here in Puget Sound, especially aboard schooners and square riggers. That might have something to do with the fact that Tom Lewis performs regularly here. Jeri, your tune sounds as close as needed until you get a chance to buy the CD. Yes folks, buy the CD to support the artist. Then, steal the song :-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: MMario Date: 18 Jul 01 - 10:50 AM Jeri - it sound like the melody as I've heard it. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Jeri Date: 18 Jul 01 - 10:37 AM Like I said, anybody who wants to see if I got the tune right, click on the link to the midi in this message. Feel free to critique it here or by PM to me. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Naemanson Date: 18 Jul 01 - 10:16 AM Jeri, your midi is pretty close to the way I know it. I'll sing it at the Press Room next Friday and you can chime in with some harmony on the chorus if you like. All I can say about the hammock line is... OOPS! I guess maybe I learned it right but over the years it has somehow changed in my head. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Jul 01 - 09:56 AM I heard this at the DC Chantey sing, so I have the tune in my head, which is unfortunately (pun intended) not of much help to anyone. But it is a great song. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: GUEST,Celtic Soul Date: 18 Jul 01 - 09:54 AM I know it. And if you're local, I'd be glad to sing it for you. Unfortunately, I do not read or write music or chords. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: SeanM Date: 18 Jul 01 - 12:15 AM Sorry... forgot to say that the version on his site has the "sonar/loran" verse. As to tune... The versions I've heard have all been acapella. I'd imagine sheet would reflect that. M |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: SeanM Date: 18 Jul 01 - 12:13 AM Also... It's a Tom Lewis Original. His lyrics, as posted on his site (www.tomlewis.net), are pretty much the definitive source. Variants will be variants, but them's the lyrics "from the source", or as near as you can get without having him walk up and correct them personally. M |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: GUEST,Mike Date: 17 Jul 01 - 09:37 PM Killick.......2 meanings a: an anchor.B this is the reference i the song:- The Mess Leader |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:58 PM sounds pretty damn close there Jeri... Like there's maybe one or 2 notes that I sing differently, but not by far! ;-) But basically, the version in the DT should be yanked fast, trashed, and replaced with one that's RIGHT! LOL!!! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Jeri Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:49 PM You folks who know the tune better than I do - does this sound close? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Jeri Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:27 PM Nope - "Swinging from the deckhead or lying on the floor?" See Tom Lewis's version of the lyrics. (Aw, what does he know anyway.) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Naemanson Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:19 PM Somewhere I have yet another verse for this that Tom wrote fairly recently. He taught it to me at Mystic one year. It includes LORAN and SONAR. I will dig it out. The version in the DT does not conform to the version I know. I believe mine may be more accurate. I learned it from Tom. The line "We've nearly got a mess. He says we have it soft." should be "The killick of our mess..." Killick is a British Navy slang term but I'm not sure of its precise meaning. Also the line "Swinging on the deckhead or lying on the floor?" should be "Swing it from the deckhead or lay it on the floor?". Sorry but no help with the dots. I learned it by ear. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:12 PM Ya... that song SHOULD be called "The Last Shanty"... NOT "A sailor ain't a sailor"... Tom named it what he did for a reason, folks... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: GUEST,Nick Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:10 PM We know our codes and cyphers but what's a semiphore? A bunting duster dosen't dust the bunting any more! Yep Last Shanty is the name, but I have looked for penny whistle music for it to no avail I do have it on a CD from a band I saw in Nova Scotia called Boys next Door. Nick (NicksterNM@aol.com) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: MMario Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:03 PM well - I mean this one |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Jul 01 - 04:01 PM Do you mean "The Last Shanty" by Tom Lewis? As in...
"Don't haul on the rope, don't clim up the mast
That one? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: MMario Date: 17 Jul 01 - 03:58 PM This is one of the "missing tunes" - if anyone has it -= please include me. |
Subject: A Sailor Ain't A Sailor From: GUEST,Jenny Date: 17 Jul 01 - 03:56 PM Can anyone let me have the tune/dots for A Sailor Ain't A Sailor please. Its the usual thing - I know the tune to the chorus but not too sure of the tune for the verses. Cheers. Jenny. |
