I don't know if any of you can help but here goes. My son has a problem sith his pc. Every time it boots up a pop up window opens with the message "windows registration has detected an error please click ok for windows to fix" once rebooted the graphics drivers have been deleted yet the problem still occurs. The problem also persists unless the hard drive is full formatted at which point the problem does not reoccur until AOL (any version) is reinstalled. He is running windows me.
He had recently changed the bios on the graphics card from the creative 3d blaster savage 4 to the s3 savage 4 ( because he had been told it would be faster and more compatible). It will now not go back to the creative blaster one and is running slower and is less compatable.

I hope someone out there understands this and can help

Jude

Jude -- I would recommend going to SoundBlaster's web site to see if they have a download that will reinstate your son's PC prior to the s3 savage install.

Windows ME is a very good OS. I have it on one of my systems. You should be fine with it. However, once you take care of the bios problem, it would probably behoove you to back up all the important data files, then format the disk and reload the OS.

Reloading the OS is quite easy -- especially if your son's PC was purchased with pre-installed software. The manufacturer will have provided recovery CDs. Piece of cake. Of course, you will have to reload all of the application software that was added later.

A fresh start will do wonders.

A good site to check for help and info is

http://www.cnet.com

Hope this helps...dmp

ME is ok...what you might try to do is go to start and then run and type in msconfig.....you can restore the OS to a previous configuration from there....by clicking on launch system restore...

I am not a WindowsMe user, but I do try to keep up on new issues with PCs. I understand that WindowsMe incorporates some "NT" features, much like the Win2000 that I use.
There are some problems with "backward compatibility" in that some older programs simply do not run well on the newer operating systems. Mickeysoft has apparently decided that they have to "sacrifice" some of the older stuff in order to get all the "newandmodernimprovements" that they want you to have.
If you seem to be having a problem with a particular program, one of the first things you should do is check out whether "the uSoft gods" know about issues with the program, and whether they think it should run.
If my "clicky" works, you should be able to get into something that might help here:
WindowsMe Support
(Just in case of "clickyfailure" that's:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/support/default.asp)
The click is to an opening site where you can see what information is available. It looked like there might be information that would be helpful here, and this site should(?) lead easily to a place where you can look at their "approved/ceritified" software and lists.
If you find that you have problems with trying to run something that makes WinMe belch, you can look at uSoft for driver updates, and/or contact the people who made the software to see if they have a fix.
At the least, knowing that there is a recognized problem with a specific program can save you a lot of time you might waste just "poking things" and hoping it will get better.

Good Luck.
John

Afterthought
The simplest thing that will cause boot warnings about registry is improper shutdown.
All Windows programs make continual changes to registry files during operation. Some of these are held in memory until you shut down the machine.
When you do the "Start - Shutdown" thing (I think it's still the same procedure for WinMe), any "open" changes are written into registry files, so that everything is up to snuff before the power shuts off.
If you just "hit the switch," instead of doing the normal shutdown, WinMe will remember it, and will punish you when you restart.
It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but sometimes it's easy to forget the simple stuff.

John

Hey! Win98SE is pretty good! And win3.x (OR '95) still doesn't know it's now past the year 2000...
