Only recently I had some contact with Maeve's daughter Tara and she is still seeking out any memorabilia that people might have. I'm so glad that Tara contacted Me on messenger on the off chance that I might be able to help in some small way otherwise I would never have came upon this thread. I have searched high and low over the past few days trying to find out anything about Tara's Mother Maeve. It was lovely reading all the comments, the names of familiar and not so familiar artists and the venues they frequented. It looks like Maeve and Butch were the real deal. This is gold dust and we will never see their likes again

Very fun to stumble across this thread! Both Maeve and Butch's passing was so sad to hear about. I grew up listening to them in Holyoke, with my parents Jean and Bill Dean and of course Larry Chesky of Rex Records. He produced quite a few of their later records. He also passed away some years ago.
Tara, I don't know if you remember me, but we met back when you were about 16 I believe. We were at an amusement park where your Mom was playing and we kept each other company!

Hi! I came across this when I was googling Maeve's name. I am sorry to hear of Butch and Maeve both passing. Like many others on this thread, it was my first exposure to Irish music. But just to throw a twist in here, I heard them at Ryan's Pub in New Orleans back in the 80's. I'll never forget that night. I was visiting my best friend who is an Irish nun and she asked if I would like to go hear some Irish music that night. I kinda thought that was strange because at that time I didn't connect New Orleans with Irish music! I totally enjoyed their music.

In the early to mid-'70s, Butch and Maeve were the highlight of the summer on Cape Cod. They appeared every season at the Century Club in Falmouth where Jan and Jim Campbell provided Irish entertainment from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Grand times they were.
Many a night, Butch and Maeve wound up at our cottage on Round Pond where we all saw the sun come up. Often, everyone took a nap before driving them to their place on Route 28.
they were warm and wonderful people and dear friends to all who crossed their path.
They are with a lot of the lads now.

I met Butch and Maeve at the keg room in Springfield Ma. Travelled with them to the cape, Conway NH, and Matt Kane's in Washington DC. I sang on the Night at the Keg room with our friends album. I remember when Rory and later Tara were born. I remember meeting you Tony when they lived just outside of Springfield. I cannot tell you how sorry I was to hear that they had passed. They were wonderful friends, and they are truly missed.

Maeve is also on an old record called "An evening of Ballads and Blarney at Clontarf Castle" along with the Dragoons Folk Club, John Roche, Shane Redmond and several others.
Maeve sings Arbour Hill, Robert Emmett and Sergeant Baily on this 1966 recording.

I grew up and continue to live in Alexandria, Va. I have fond memories from the 70's when my parents and grandparents used to go to Matt Kanes in Washington DC to see Butch & Maeve. I was only 10 years old, but remember them coming home late at night very happy. Family lore is that one night my grandmother, who was from Lietrim, got up and danced an Irish jig. I've dug up the old copy of "A Night at the Keg with Our Irish Friends" album, digitized it, and have been listening to it daily. My young kids of 4 & 6 love it! A tip of the hat and a drink to you, Butch & Maeve--your work continues to bring joy on earth...

I remember Maeve singing in the Grafton Cinema (Dublin) midnight concerts
c 1963/64. There were very few if any solo female ballad singers then.
Mention above of Yamaha (guitar) stirred my memory, Maeve also raced 50cc motor bikes. I may be wrong but ballads & bikes where my main interests then.
Butch was deputy sheriff, Worcester County, Mass from 1990 until his untimely death.

And meave combined and individually helped to shape my musical tastes from a very young age. They were greatly admired in my house. Mom and dad were quite friendly with them and they played at their 50th anniv. Butch was a truely kind and wonderful person and meave was truely his equal. i remember butch and maeve so well. i became good friends with them along with the Bards. i was so disheartend to hear of their passing. i met them at the keg room in springfield, ma. i sent them a note on a napkin saying i only had 6 months to live could they play a song. bad way to do it but i got my song. they were so upset and i felt so bad. i went up during a break and spoke to them about it. they forgave me and we became great friends. did the same thing to the bards. and we became great friends. followed them both to matt kanes in wash. d.c. they were all the best people

I have recently been left a large collect of Vinyl records, everything from the wolftones to the ballad of the green berets. The one album that stuck out in excellent condition was Maeve Mulvaney - Rebel Balads, her voice is hauntingly beautiful. I would like to see this album but am not sure what it is wort. I was in the Army's Old Guard in DC from 1975-1979 and was introduced to my Irish music heritage by an Army buddy. We went to Mate Kane's in DC and I have very fond memories of Butch and Maeve performing. Butch was very friendly and outgoing and all of the guys I knew had a crush on Maeve. And what a beautiful voice she had! They were a wonderful couple and will live forever in the hearts and memories of people whose lives they touched.

Many years ago we were invited to a pub in Springfield, MA, to hear an Irish duo, and that began a love of listening to Butch and Maeve. They played frequently at The Piccadilly Pub in Southbury, CT, but we went all over to hear them. We have one album of Butch only, and had all of their 8-tracks, which have disappeared.

No one answered if there are any existing recordings available. Obviously there are some of us who would love to have them.

Tara and the Moore/Mulvaney family -- Butch and Maeve were wonderful performers, and had a knack for remembering the names of their fans and making us feel special. Fabulous people who are missed in their sphere.

The very first time I walked into "The Locker Room" in Holyoke, with my friend Eric (who would later be part owner of the "Parting Glass Pub"), Butch & Maeve were playing.

It was my first exposure to Irish folk music. I was a bartender at another joint in Holyoke at the time, and I was just stunned at how everyone at the LR was *so* into the music. Clapping, singing, blah, blah.

Then Butch launched into "Walking the Streets in the Rain", and I turned to Eric and said "Holy - can this guy sing!!".

Went to see them many times after that. Every night was a ton of fun. They were great entertainers. I miss 'em.

I remember Butch and Maeve singing at my father's Pub "The Irish Club" in Worcester, Ma (Div. 36 AOH). My Dad , Tommy Bowen was friends with them, since the 70's. We spent many the night at the Parting Glass Pub in Millbury (even brought an old girl friend there, and introduced her to Irish Music). So sorry to hear of both thier passing's. Pulled the old Signed LP out of the footlocker and Song a round of the "Parting Glass" Loved you both !!! You made our lives and the world better for being a part of it ! I am so glad I came across this site as it brings back many happy memories of my time in Dublin. We used to go to a ( non alcoholic) ballad session every wedensday night in a club near the Four Courts. it would have been in the very early sixties aprox 1961. Many of the big ballad names of that period got there start there. I especially remember Maeve and tommy Makem who were great hits at that time.

Wow, how nice to hear all the memories surrounding mom and dad (Butch and Maeve), some of you I remember myself and it's so very interesting to read all the comments.... there is some clips on youtube of Butch and the film O'donahues opera with mom in it... I must post some of them together if I ever figure out how!! little clip of the Capitol showband in 84' also.

My friend, Jerry Downs, passed away almost a year ago. I have been helping his siblings find homes for his belongings, as he was a lifelong bachelor with no children. We came across an autographed album "A Night At The Keg With Our Irish Friends" by Butch & Maeve noting 'Holy Cross 84'.

This album is in pristine condition, has probably never been played. Jerry graduated from Holy Cross, so Butch & Maeve must have had a gig on campus back in 1984. Is anyone interested in purchasing this album (all monies earned are going to a local non-profit for children that Jerry was involved with)?

Maeve was famous in the folk scene in Dublin long before she and Butch got together, she sang on a weekly basis for about 5 years in the Embankment in Tallaght For Mick McCarthy (where I worked bar in in the evenings from 1965 -1970), the old Sheiling in Raheny for Bill fuller, Slatterys of Caple st to name but a few, always singing Irish rebel and freedom songs which were rapturously received whereever she went, often appearing on the same bill as Dolly McMahon and Bob Lynch. A very pretty girl, she kept herself to herself quite a lot but a wonderful singer. Id love to have some of her songs on dvd, Sgt William Bailey was a classic and always brought the house down. I was so saddened when Butch died, she wrote to me with photos of herself and the children and then within a very short time she too had died suddenly, such a pity.

I remember the wonderful days of Matt Kane and how I would always go with my husband Bill (who always had a crush on Mauve) They were alway the best people. I just now found out about them and I am so sorry for the family loss. I will cry tonight thinking about all the good times we had and how they always made everyone feel so special. I know they are in heaven with Bill playing the music I long to hear.

We were regular customers of "The Parting Glass Pub" and spent many a nite having fun with Butch and Maeve. They were more than entertainers to us they were friends. We watched their family grow up.

(Try again sorry.) I'm ashamed it took so long for me to find out the news of Butch and Maeve. A group of us from Delaware made many trips to Matt Kane's Bit of Ireland in Washington DC to see these fantastic performers in the '70s. They ALWAYS got to our requests and thankfully never played the unicorn song (as I recall). Butch would advise,usually at break, "We got tausands of requests...Tausends and tausends...and we're gonna get to every one of them!" There was always a friendly wave, smile and hug whenever we came to town, and Maeve always remembered my girlfriend's (and my) favorite, "Only Our Rivers Run Free." God bless and keep them both. What a lovely legacy to have made so many feel so joyful and special during and between performances. RIP

I thought Maeve was one of the finest female ballad singers I ever heard. She performed at one Festival of Kerry at least, around 1966 or 1967.

That short firm '0'Donoghues Opera' was shown to night on TG4. It will be repeated on next Sunday (1st March 2009) at 7pm. It was lovely to see Maeve and Ronnie Drew singing in the film. I never knew it existed.

Butch and Maeve were friends of mine from the many Friday and Saturday nights that the played at Kelly's Lobster House in Holyoke, Ma. I knew that they both had passed and I miss them to this day. They were both fine entertainers and great people. I am proud to have known them and prouder to say they were friends. My condolences to Tony and the rest of the family. I tried to search Youtube in the hopes of finding a clip or two but to no avail. I am sure someone out there must have some video of them in concert and it would be a great tribute to their memory to allow their fans and friends to see them again. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this site! I grew up with Butch and Maeve singing in Worcester, MA. My uncle, Jim Sullivan, was very close with the couple. I made my first (and last) singing debut 19 years ago, at the ripe old age of 6 with them. We all sang Puff the Magic Dragon. I can recall them telling my mom they didn't know the song, but for me to start singing and they would join in. I will never forget that or them.....May God Bless.
