Does anyone know the words to "The Memory Song". I don't know who it was written by, but Mike Fleming and New West sing it.

First line is "Looking for my wallet and my car keys"

Richard Wright

hmmm. According to this site, New West has only 2 CD's out and it's not on either of them. Is this a new,3rd CD? Lyrics to most of the songs on the first 2 are at the above site. You might want to check there. There is also a "contact" button for e mail.

Sorcha;

It's going on their next CD. I just heard Mike do it at a festival but was not able to record it or write the words down fast enough.

A friend of mine sings this and I have it on a CD, which I won't be able to access until next week. The songwriter's last name, I think, is Waters or Walters, but don't quote me on that. If no one else gets you the lyrics and attribution by next week, email me to remind me, and I will get them for you.

Richard, I have not forgotten "Memory." I have a call in to my friend who sings this song and knows who wrote it. I hope I can post the info for you very soon.

If you already have it, I may post it anyway, since it's such a great song. (Something like, "I'm looking for my wallet and the keys to my car, And if I could find my glasses, I could see right where they are.")

Richard, The Memory Song was written and recorded by Steve Walters, who used to be based in Denver but now lives, I think, in N. California. The guy I heard sing it learned it from a sound file posted on the website of Chuck Pyle, aka " Zen Cowboy."

I don't know his current web address, but maybe some other catter does.

If all else fails, I will find and play my CD of it and transcribe the words myself for posting.

Genie, I've located the web-site for Chuck Pyle/Zen Cowboy

Unfortunately, I don't see that song there.

Richard,
I seem to have lost my "Memory Song." (misplaced the CD, anyway--just like in the song!)
Thought I'd refresh this and maybe refresh some other catter's memory of the song.

No, Margo--at least not by name.
Wait. Does he sing with his wife at second Saturday song circles*? I may know him just as "Bill."
By all means, if you can get the lyrics, post them.

*Good tongue twister: sings songs with his spouse at second Saturday song circles.

That's funny, Genie! I've emailed Bill, but haven't heard back yet. Yes, he and Sandy attend song circle, and have hosted second sat circle as well. She sells sea shell by the sea shore, Margo

In response to a request thread, I am posting The Memory Song. I learned this song from Mo Mack in Portland, who got it from Chuck Pyle. It is a sort of talking blues -- a simple C-F-G(7) progression.

THE MEMORY SONG
(Steve Walters)

[I'm] looking for my wallet and my car keys--
Well, they can't have gone too far,
And as soon as I find my glasses
I'm sure I'll see just where they are.

[I'm] 's'posed to meet someone for lunch today
I just can't remember where
Or who it is that I am meeting ...
It's in my organiser somewhere.

I think I left it on the counter
Or maybe outside in the car. ...
Last time I remember driving
Was to that memory enhancement seminar.

What's that far off distant ringing
In that strangely familiar tone?
Must be the person I am meeting
Calling on my brand new cordless phone

I think I left it under the covers
Or maybe outside on the lawn
I've got just one more ring to go
Before my phone machine turns on

"Click"

[spoken]
"Hi, this is Steve and your call means a lot to me.
Please leave a message
and I will try to remember to call you back when I get home."

"Beeeeeeeeeep"
[Tearfully spoken]
"Steve, this is Bambi,
and I am trying not to cry,
but I've been waiting for over an hour!
I thought you loved me! This is goodbye!

[Play a bar or two without singing, then:]
The voice it sounds familiar...
and the name, it rings a bell ...
Now let's see, -- where was I?

[Play a bar or two without singing, then:]
Oh, well....

[Brief instrumental break]
I'm looking for my wallet and my car keys--
Well, they can't have gone too far,
And as soon as I find my glasses
I'm sure I'm ...
[Finish instrumentally]

^^

BTW, When I sing the song, here is how I do the voice message part:

... "Click"

[spoken]
"Hi, this is Genie and your call means a lot to me. Please leave a message and I will try to remember to call you back when I get home."

"Beeeeeeeeeep" [Angrily spoken]
"Genie, this is Joe, and I am trying not to yell, but I've been waiting for over an hour! This is goodbye, and you can go to...
"Beeeeeeeeeeeeep" "I am sorry but you have exceeded the maximum message length..."

Enjoyed reading the exchange and particularly liked the lyrics. Reminds me of someone....let's see...oh, my husband....and me. Another great memory song, if you're into the genre, is Billions of Brain Cells Ago done by Left Field. Never fails to break me up.

I've been thinking that Tom Rush wrote the Remembering Song. He has a great version of it on You Tube and it's had over three million hits! Watch it and roar!

The FAQ page of Tom Rush's web site says:
What's the name of the song about losing your memory?
"The Remember Song", is about a guy who can't. Steve Walters wrote it. Tom recorded it on his own album "Trolling for Owls", and a concert version is on the Judy Collins Wildflower Festival CD (not the DVD). Both are available from our store.
(I believe the video at YouTube was made at this festival.)

However, in the track list of Tom Rush's album "Trolling for Owls," the same song is called "REMEMBER?"

It's the same song that's called THE MEMORY SONG above.

I sure wish people would be consistent!

But maybe even the author doesn't remember what he called it.

The author?   That would be Steve Walters.
Has Steve ever recorded it with a title other than "The Memory Song?"

According to Bitmunk.com, THE REMEMBER SONG, written by Steve Walters, was recorded by Chuck Pyle on "Keepin' Time by the River," 2001.

According to CowboyPoetry.com, THE REMEMBER SONG, written by Steve Walters, was recorded by Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail on "Red Rock Moon."

According to CowboyPoetry.com, THE REMEMBER SONG, written by Steve Walters, was recorded by New West on "Buckaroo Dream."

Those are all the recordings I can find (besides Tom Rush's).

Google turns up lots of people named Steve Walters. If the songwriter has his own web site, I haven't been able to find it, or any information about him.

The Remember Song makes my wife laugh, though I can't think why.
