Subject: RE: re:I'LL TWINE 'MID THE RINGLETS(wildwood flr) From: Bill D Date: 18 Jan 98 - 06:24 PM that phrase was the subject of a LOOOOOOOONNNNNGGGG thread in rec.music.folk many months ago....it seems that there are 20 or more interpretations of what exactly what the original phrase was...'pale & the leader', 'pale Aminitas', 'islip so blue'...etc. botanists have joined the fray, trying to identify possible flowers...the final answer seems to be that no one can really tie it down...suggestions cheerfully welcomed... |

Subject: RE: re:I'LL TWINE 'MID THE RINGLETS(wildwood flr) From: GUEST,Q Date: 20 Mar 03 - 08:41 PM See thread 4074 for speculation about the flower names. Names of flowers were often local, and we have no way of knowing what plant is meant by any of the flowers named in the song, original or mangled by mis-hearings. See: Midst the ringlets |
Subject: RE: re:I'LL TWINE 'MID THE RINGLETS(wildwood flr) From: GUEST Date: 29 Aug 04 - 09:42 AM I'm so happy to know that I'm not the only one who's been confused by the lyrics of The Wildwood Flower. I have the Carter Family version on LP and Mother Maybelle is definitely hard to understand. I have heard so many versions of "the pale emenitus and eyeslip so blue". I never realized that there were so many others inquiring about the original words. I suppose it will remain an unsolved mystery. I believe that Maybelle Carter was truly a down-home lady who simply sang the words she thought she heard. |

Subject: RE: Re: I'll Twine 'mid the Ringlets (Wildwood Flower) From: PHJim Date: 12 Nov 13 - 06:05 PM Maybelle (and many who've learned it from her) sings: "The pale and the leader and eyes look like blue," which makes absolutely no sense. |
