Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: SINSULL Date: 13 Aug 01 - 08:40 PM The really big question is "Will he agree to allow the Holy Grail and Gail to accompany him?" Inquiring minds want to know. If you need a bed or a meal, add me to your list of willing proprietors, Micca. Don't know for sure where I will be but where ever, you are welcome. Mary |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Jeri Date: 13 Aug 01 - 09:23 PM I still would like to hear abouthow the Holy Grail made it over here the FIRST time. That was never quite explained. I think the UK folks should just charter a plane...(Sorry Charlie, Bill, et al - British Invasion 2001) |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Jeri Date: 13 Aug 01 - 09:25 PM Oh, and while they're at it, they might as well stop off in Germany, Iceland, Australia, and a few other places, and pick up a few more folks. |

Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: GUEST,Sledge Date: 29 Aug 01 - 05:09 AM Not sure that a visa is needed for UK citizens going to the US, I have only ever filled out a card while on the plane under something called the Visa waiver scheme, a mutual protocol between the UK/US. So you might only need the gateway ticket, enjoy. Cheers Sledge |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Big Mick Date: 29 Aug 01 - 08:44 AM This is going to be a helluva Getaway! I can't wait to get back to see my FSGW friends. This one is going to be huge...............EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH. Mick |

Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: SharonA Date: 29 Aug 01 - 06:53 PM Third weekend in October, you say? (brrr) Are these unheated cabins? Electricity or no? Is there anyplace to gather and play besides outside? (heated hall?) I'd love to come but I'll need to know how much warm clothing to pack... and if I need to get campin' stuff, I'll need to do so while it's still in the stores. Gotta talk to the boss about a day off, too... What time does this thing start on Friday? |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Bill D Date: 29 Aug 01 - 07:42 PM the Getaway is a roll of the dice...last year the days were lovely, but a couple of the nights were a mite chilly...We are the very last group to use the camp in the fall, and we take our chances. No 'heat' except what comes from the kitchen in the dining hall. I am looking at bringing several electrical space heaters for late night sings, 'if' they will allow it. There are also some elegant little non-electric heaters that are tip/spill proof available, but I have not tried them. But the answer is...have warm clothes & bedding available. Yes...is sure WOULD be nice to be able to schedule/afford the camp(or another camp) on Colombus day, as we used to...perhaps next year. |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Barry Finn Date: 29 Aug 01 - 09:36 PM Hi SharonA, the answer to one of your questions. There are a few places to get together & play/sing in large groups & these numbers dwindle as the night goes on & then late in the cabins you might find smaller groups (at least in the one I was in) but there's a good amount of music that goes on, I'm a newbee only being there the last 2 times, others should be able to bring you more up to speed.
Hi Mick, just to let you know, I got a PM from chanteyranger, he did say that Pam was coming but didn't say about Dave one way or another. Sing you there |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Linda Kelly Date: 30 Aug 01 - 06:01 PM Micca, if you wear the same hat you wore at Towersey, there is no way they are going to let you into the country....... |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Peg Date: 30 Aug 01 - 06:29 PM why don't any of these damn folk festivals allow campfires? That is just ludicrous to me.
|
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Ferrara Date: 31 Aug 01 - 05:31 PM Oh, the Getaway location (Camp Ramblewood) allows campfires, and we have singing around the campfire. But they are quite unreasonable about lighting campfires INSIDE the cabins to keep warm.... I think Dani has offered to do a Saturday late-night scarey story and campfire sing.... but the indoor venues are NOT heated. Bring electric blankets if you have 'em. (For sleeping, but maybe we'll need to wrap them around ourselves while we sing?) Also we can't use the fireplace in the dining hall. Since it was built many years ago and is not up to code. One house on the place is actually old enough to have been a known way station on the Underground Railway. (Not relevant to the campfire question, but neat anyway.... |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: catspaw49 Date: 31 Aug 01 - 05:51 PM Attorney I know here that did a lot of pro bono work for Children's Services just died yesterday up in Canada from 80% third degree burns. Seems that one of those old chimneys being used in a hunting cabin caused a problem with the stove and it exploded. Best to follow the camp's instructions........... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Charlie Baum Date: 04 Sep 01 - 02:32 AM Regardng SharonA's question about when the Getaway starts on Friday--some of us will be there by mid-afternoon to start setting things up. Many people arrive dinner-ish (it's a pot-luck)--sometime after work between say 4 and 9 pm. Others arrive later--much later. One year Big Mick arrived at 3 or 4 am on Saturday morning. One year, I got there at 1 am on Sunday morning. So come when you can. Music usually gets going by 8 or 9 ish on Friday, and stops sometime in teh wee hours of Sunday turning into Monday morning, though admittedly the music sometimes gets sparse between 3 and 7 am. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Fortunato Date: 04 Sep 01 - 10:02 AM Micca and I will be arriving at the Getaway on Friday afternoon, I think. I've asked the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton, Maryland (suburb of DC) to let us have an informal music session on Thursday night to welcome Micca to the US. All you DC and passing through Mudcatters please join us. If you need directions, request them here and I'll post them. Please RSVP here, call me, or PM or email me to let me know how many folks to expect so I can set up the rear of the pub for us! Let's give Micca a warm welcome. Chance Shiver |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Peg Date: 04 Sep 01 - 10:46 AM re: campfires. I would not refer to an INDOOR fire as a "campfire." Unless there is a well ventilated and functioning fireplace or stove an indoor fire is just kinda asking for trouble (sorry about your freind, Spaw; that is horrible)...not unreasonable at all...many "campers" do not actually know how to build or maintain fires properly (I have seen people out at Brushwood toss some logs on the grass, douse them with lighter fluid, toss a match, watch it burn for two minutes, scowl when it goes out, and continue to pour lighter fluid on it so it will flame an additional two or three minutes (or as long as their lighter fluid held out). Unbelievable. I was surprised to see that Old Songs, which is on a very rustic campsite, did not allow outdoor fires. It made no sense to me. Dharmabum had a little charcoal grill he built a "fire" in one night! We sang around it.
|
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Bill D Date: 04 Sep 01 - 03:47 PM ummm...no one is suggesting indoor fires. There IS no place to have one(This camp usually doesn't TRY to function in borderline off-season...we are being accommodated ..just the 'possible' idea of space heaters in case of chilly nights. Of course we'll defer to camp policy...I am simply looking to maximizing our options and planning ahead. *IF* little heaters are ok, we'd be silly not to bring a couple. (The not-so-bad option is lots of accapella singing while dressed warmly) |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Ferrara Date: 05 Sep 01 - 05:01 AM Whoa, Fortunato, what a grand idea to have a Royal Mile evening on Thursday! Have they agreed to let us do it? I plan to be there. (I've always wished that we could make the Getaway a day or two longer anyway... this is a good start.) |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: GUEST,micca at work Date: 05 Sep 01 - 06:56 AM Chance, I LIKE the sound of the Thursday night thing, if it can be arranged. Does the Royal Mile have cider??? Grail LIKES Cider!!!!Peg, I will have some time between Wed and Saturday, is a visit feasible, preferably with a chance to sing, I have to fly home from DC on Sunday, and would aim to get back there Saturday, Nothing is fixed yet, PM me if it looks likely, |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Fortunato Date: 05 Sep 01 - 08:46 AM Yes, Ferrera, we're on. Let's try to round up a good crowd. Micca and Susette and I will get there early for dinner and get it started.
Micca it's all arranged, Yes they have Bulmer's Woodpecker Cider on tap as well as Guinness Stout, Bass Ale, Newcastle Brown Ale, Tetley's English Smooth Ale, Pilsner Urquell, Harp, Sierra Nevada, Killians Irish Red Ale, Rolling Rock and lotso stuff in bottles. And any single malt scotch you'd care to name.
Grail can wet his whistle without doubt! |

Mike Seeger founded it, and this year is a tribute to him. I'll be back on Sunday. Greatly looking forward to your visit and the Getaway. All the best. chance |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: SINSULL Date: 14 Sep 01 - 06:31 PM Good news, Micca. The Getaway seems impossibly normal and extraordinary today. |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Bill D Date: 14 Sep 01 - 07:32 PM perhaps by late Oct, we'll be more in the mood....(a local group did simply meet and sing for awhile the other evening....did us good) |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Sep 01 - 08:02 PM Yeah.....Time passes and though I doubt we forget, we adjust. But hey Micca.......I see Chance gave you some info, but check this out for the Royal Mile Pub Spaw |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Micca Date: 14 Sep 01 - 09:40 PM Thanks Spaw for the info, and Sins, yes, " The Getaway seems impossibly normal and extraordinary today." it does seem impossibly so, but thats how we keep going, by not letting the savagery deflect us or change our plans or way of life, in fear, or hate, for if we do these people who commited this atrocity win, not once but twice.. they kill, and then force us to be other than what we are or to be deflected from the orderly paths of our lives. Of course we are hurt, but we carry on anyway, because we can. I will look forward with renewed hope to meeting and greeting ,in a spirit of International, frontierless , friendship the many Mudcatters I have heard /seen on threads and Paltalk in the flesh.

Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Fortunato Date: 17 Sep 01 - 12:58 PM Thanks, spaw for the link to the Royal Mile . Who knows what stumbling blocks we shall encounter, but this Getaway will be one long remembered for the attendance of Micca and other 'catters from afar, and also for the fellowship and unity we come to share in the wake of sadness. Cheers, all. I'll put up a thread about our session for Micca, with times and details, nearer the arrival of our dear friend from across the pond. Keep singing, friends. Chance |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Sep 01 - 01:14 PM Well, I was saving this, but since White Tuesday, our plans have changed. I had found some very inexpensive tickets and was getting ready to buy them and make arrangements for getting there from the airport, etc. Then, Tuesday came. Now the tickets are doubled in price and we will not be able to make it. I know it sounds selfish, but I am really angry/sad 1)that I didn't buy the tickets the minute I found them, 2)at the far-flung effects of the heinous actions of terrorists, 3) most of all, that I will not get to see you all. This time it was really going to happen. Guess I'll have to practise my astral travelling and meet you in the wee hours of the night. Micca, I am so glad you are still going to make it. Be careful, luv. kat |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Fortunato Date: 17 Sep 01 - 01:46 PM I'm sorry, kat, that you won't be coming. We'll hope for next year. namaste. Chance |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: Charlie Baum Date: 17 Sep 01 - 06:38 PM Kat-- don't despair yet.. if the current lack of fliers keeps up, I predict that airlines will have dirt-cheap sales on tickets very soon to fill up their planes which are flying half-empty now. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Micca at the Getaway? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Sep 01 - 07:09 PM Charlie, I had not thought of that. I will keep checking. Thanks for the encouragement! Namaste, Chance, thanks to you, both. kat |
