I am a pretty little Dutch girl
As pretty as pretty can be
And all the boys around the block
Are crazy over me, me, me!

This is a little ditty that my Mom used sing us, her children, fifty to sixty years ago!
Don't know where it came from, but most likely someone sang it to her when she was little too!

I recall when I was small
A cozy nursery
With pretty pictures on the wall
As grandma sent to me.

A little Dutch boy and a little Dutch girl
Sat dreaming on a hill.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl,
"When will you say 'I will'?"
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

Down in the valley,
Grandma used to tell,
There was a chalet
With a quaint old wishing well.

So the little Dutch boy built the little Dutch girl
A chalet on the hill.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill

is it this one? said the little dutch boy to the little dutch girl "when will u say 'i will'"

Think you are all talking about this song that my dad used to sing to me when I was a little girl.

I went on to sing it to my children when they were small :)

Okay, I am 57 and we sang a Dutch girl song that is in no way similar to anything I have read so far. I was doing a search for it, and found this page and comments. Mine is totally different. We also did hand motions to it, and I now I have the tune/melody stuck in my head. Here is the version I know:

I am a little Dutch girl
I lived across the sea
I fell in love with a rubba-dub-dub
And left the USA
He took me to his castle
And there he made me stay
First he gave me peaches, and then he gave me pears
And then he gave me 50 cents and kicked me down the stairs.

Warped, right? But I swear this is what me and my elementary friends used to sing. I have NO idea where this odd version came from.

Here is the link. Follow the instructions. Make sure you select the free version. You are allowed to listen to 20 hours of streaming per month, with the odd advert.

The Spotify link didn't work for me. Do you have to download something first? Or subscribe to something? Anyway, I was able to find a couple of other samples, plus there's another recording here by Sammy Kaye. Although the sound quality was very poor, I think I was able to get all the lyrics. (Note: the Sammy Kaye recording uses the present tense: "Tick-tock, tick-tock goes the funny old clock, and the little old mill goes round and round," etc., but I have used past tense to be consistent with the Joe Loss version.)

THE LITTLE OLD MILL (WENT ROUND AND ROUND)
Don Pelosi, Lewis Ilda, Leo Towers
New York: Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., Inc., 1947

I recall when I was small
A cozy nursery
With pretty pictures on the wall
As grandma sent to me.

A little Dutch boy and a little Dutch girl
Sat dreaming on a hill.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl,
"When will you say 'I will'?"
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

Down in the valley,
Grandma used to tell,
There was a chalet
With a quaint old wishing well.

So the little Dutch boy built the little Dutch girl
A chalet on the hill.
"Tick-tock, tick-tock" went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

[There was a Danish version called DEN LILLE RØDE MØLLE.]

This comes rather late, but...

I think the song in the original question is The Little old Mill by Don Pelosi, Lewis Ilda (= Irwin Dash) and Leo Towers. It can be found in Spotify.

Originally, I know this song from its Finnish translation Pieni mylly (= Little Mill), sung by Olavi Virta, the greatest Finnish popular music singer.

I remember a version very similar to the one in Bert's 0/09/04 post as a primary school playground game in the 1950s in North London. It was done by two lines of children, mostly girls, rather than by two individuals, and the boy was alleged to have stolen a long list of items. Eventually the two marry, die, and go to heaven as angels.

The tune was a version of O du lieber Augustin, or Balls to Mr. Banglestein if you prefer.

My mother used to sing about this same subject but all I
can remember goes like this or sort of like this:

The little dutch boy. the little dutch girl
were playing down along the brookside
La la la, la la la la Jack and Jill
Heard it form the little brook that couldn't keep still
La la la he kissed her.
La la la la la la la la
la la la he kissed her.
la la la la la.

I would sure like to know more of this little song.

A little Dutch boy and a little Dutch girl sat dreaming on a hill
Tick tock tick tock went the merry old clock
and the little old mill went round and round
and round went the little old mill

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl,
'When will you say I will?'
Tick tock...

Down in the valley, Grandma used to tell
There was a chalet with a quaint old wishing well

So the little Dutch boy built the little Dutch girl

this is the one we use to sing as a little kid except the 2nd line was who sat dreaming on a hill, and we sang down in the valley where Grandma use to dwell, the rest is the same, Dave Bird from the UK now in Australia

There was a little Dutch boy and a little Dutch girl,
In a chalet on the hill.
Tick tock, tick tock went the funny old clock,
And the little old mill went round and round and round
Went the little old mill.

Down in the valley
Where Grandpa used to dwell,
There was a chalet, with a quaint old wishing well.

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl,
When will you say "I will"?
Tick tock, tick tock went the funny old clock,
And the little old mill went round and round and round
Went the little old mill.

Hie
How about these snippets of a hand-clapping song I learned in Canada?

"I am a little Dutch girl
as pretty as can be
My boyfriend's name is Jello
and he's a cute little fellow
With pink pink toes
And freckles on his nose
And that's the way my story goes!"

"Oh Mary Mary Mary
You ought to be ashamed
To mary mary mary
A boy with such a name
J-E-L-L-O
Jello!"

A LITTLE DUTCH MILL
Words, Ralph Freed. Music, Harry Barris.
As sung by Bing Crosby with the Jimmie Grier Orchestra (1934)

Far across the sea in Holland,
In the land of wooden shoes,
There's a story nearly ev'ryone knows.
You may never be in Holland,
So I know you will excuse
If here and now I tell you how it goes.

There's a little Dutch mill,
On a little Dutch hill
Where the little Dutch stars shine bright.
Now, a little Dutch boy
And his little Dutch girl
Fell in love by the mill one night.

Up above, the Dutch moon
Made the scene complete.
They both had so much moon
That it was a real Dutch treat;
So the little Dutch boy
And the little Dutch girl
Bought the little Dutch mill
On the little Dutch hill,
And they've added the touch
Of a little Dutch family.

Up above, the Dutch moon
Made the scene complete.
They both had so much moon
That it really was the real Dutch treat;
So the little Dutch boy
And the little Dutch girl
Bought the Dutch mill on the Dutch hill,
And they added the touch
Of family.

Subject: Lyr Add: TULI-TULIP TIME
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Sep 04 - 10:38 PM

Copied from http://www.williambernthal.com/_wsn/page12.html, where it was printed without line breaks. I have inserted line breaks where they seem plausible, but I haven't heard the song.

TULI-TULIP TIME*
Jack Lawrence and Maria Mendez Grever

Picture a little Dutch boy, a little Dutch girl in Holland.
Picture a little windmill upon a Dutch hill in Holland.
There's a yellow painted moon above them; a Dutch moon; too much moon.
Guess what the little Dutch boy, the little Dutch girl are doing?
Just from the look of things, would you say they're billing and cooing?
Well, if you would like to know exactly, they're dreaming, just dreaming.
He said, "This is tuli, tuli, tuli, tuli, tulip time."
She said, "Yes, it's tuli, tuli, tuli, tuli, tulip time."
Then they talked about the weather
But their heads were close together.
They agreed it's tuli, tuli, tuli, tuli, tulip time.
He said, "Are you truly, truly, truly, truly mine?"
With a kiss, she sighed, "Forever."
You can hardly blame them -- you would do the same in tulip time!
"If not for tulip time," said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl,
"Our love, it would never be, not that I could see."
"What, no, never?" "No, never."
"What, no, never?" "Hardly ever."

[Recorded by Horace Heidt & His Brigadiers, 1938; by Willie Farmer & His Orchestra, 1938; and by The Andrews Sisters.

[*On some lists, the title is spelled TU-LI TULIP TIME.]

I Have tried & tried but I can't remember the first verse, so starting from verse two, I recall it as this:-

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl
When will you say 'I will'
Tick tock, tick tock went the funny old clock
And the little old mill went round and round
And round went the little old mill.

Down in the valley, Granpa used to tell,
There was a chalet with a quaint old wishing well

So the little Dutch boy built the little Dutch girl
A chalet on the hill
Tick tock... and all that stuff again!

There are hills in Limburg -- the area around Maastricht. That's definitely not typical of the Netherlands, though. And depending on when and where it was written, "Dutch" could be a euphemism for "German." Aren't the "Pennsylvania Dutch" really German?

I can remember singing this as a kid at school - we did hand motions to it. The chorus went:

Tick-tock, tick-tock went the funny old clock,
And the little old mill went round and round and round
Went the little old mill.

The verses were very simple ie:

A little Dutch boy and a little Dutch Girl
Were sitting on a hill.
Tick-tock etc

Said the little Dutch boy to the little Dutch girl
"Now will you marry me ?"

And finishing:

So the little Dutch boy and the little Dutch girl
Got married on the hill

The mention of HILL makes me think that the author was not ver well aquainted with Dutch topography !

This site called American Music Classics says that Buddy Clark recorded a song called "The Little Dutch Boy and the Little Dutch Girl" and they are offering a cassette of it.

Buddy Clark was actively recording songs in the 30's and 40's, but other than that, I have no confirmation that this is the song you are looking for. I couldn't find the lyrics.

I vaguely recall something about:

Said the little Dutch girl to the little Dutch boy,
"When will you say 'I do'"

and another line:

And the little Dutch mill went 'round and 'round,
And 'round went the little Dutch mill.

Could this be the right tune?
Or does it jog anyone's memory?

Could it be this one, which appears to be a variant of the "pretty" one?

I am a pretty little Dutch girl,
I live across the street,
And all the boys
Around the block
Are crazy over me.

I have a boyfriend, Patty.
He comes from Cincinatti,
With forty-eight toes
And a pickle on his nose
And this is the way my story goes

One day as I was walking,
I heard my boyfriend talking,
To a little girl
With a strawberry curl
And this is what he said to her,

I L-O-V-E, love you,
I K-I-S-S, kiss you,
I K-I-S-S, kiss you
On your F-A-C-E, face.
