Haven't found much. Apparently, it was recorded by Mary Coughlan on her "Tired and Emotional" CD, and on her "Best of" collection. An alternate title for the song may be "Delaney Gone Back on the Wine." apparently, the song was written by Johnny Mulhern.

That's the singer Mary Coughlan. Fantastic blues voice. Thanks Joe it's a start. I'll try your title suggestion.

I have the CD. If I get a chance this week, and if nobody else posts them first, I'll post them here.

Subject: Almost a Lyr Add: Delaney's gone back on the win
From: Brendy

Ok, folks..

I have only been able to listen to this song on the car CD player, so far... and, much like using hand-held mobile phones, I don't like to fiddle around rewinding and fast-forwarding, while a prisoner of the white lines of the freeway...so there are a few gaps in the text.

I would have to sit down properly and go through it: for instance the first set of question marks (in the first verse) refers to something in Eyre Square (more than likely). The second bit that's missing is obviously the line that I reckon is deliberately put into songs by some songwriters to confuse the hell out of people.
I have listened to it so often now, that I am sure I can pick out 'Paul is dead' wafting out of the saxophone, at the crucial moment.

The chords are beautiful, though, and although fairly straightforward 'jazz' progressions, there's some nice wee turns in it.

When I get a bit of time....can't promise anything soon, though...I would love to have a go doing this song, and that would obviously involve working out the proper words, as well as the chords.

When I get all of that done, I'll post it in this thread (I've a trace on it)

I have been listening to this song...and Mary Coughlan in general...for years. Just never got around to learning it.

I'll never forget the day that she threw a pint of Heinekien over Frankie Gavin's head!! (fiddle player with De Danann)

Anyway...here goes. Feel free to add your corrections.

DELANEY'S GONE BACK ON THE WINE
Johnny Mulhearn

In a rundown little tavern, back in old Galway Town,
Where the boys and me would practice every day.
Over in the Square ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ??
Big George Delaney's mandolin held sway
Occasionally he'd drop in, to buy another bottle,
Until the day he joined in our strange song.
Since then we've been together, one-night-stands and stormy weather.
And after all the souped up cocktails,
This is all that's left to say.

CHORUS
Delaney's gone back on the wine.
Too many years spent marching in time
Now he's like all the other bums:
Sorry, but so glad to be alone.

He didn't move out right away
Spent a few evenings just tearing out his hair
While all the kids just stared.
And we moaned about who really cared.

And when ?? ?? ?? ?? ??
All good friends lapping up our style
But now, the blitz has hit town,
There's nobody around,
there's nobody around

CHORUS
Delaney's gone back on the wine.
Too many years spent marching in time
Now he's like all the other bums:
Sorry, but so glad to be alone.

Delaney's gone back on the wine
In a few years it wont seem like such a crime
So, farewell lounge bar blues
Sorry, but so glad to be alone

B.

Brendy you are a star. Thank you so much for all the trouble you have gone to in getting these words together. Cheers

I've been curious about the lyrics to this one for quite a while too. Here's what I hear (I'm not saying it's necessarily correct, of course):

3 line: Over in the Square amongst his cronies there
4 line: ...big Joe Delaney (not that it matters)
18 line: and when we were starry eyed

Don't laugh if this is off, I'm notorious for hearing lyrics completely incorrectly.

To my ears, what Dave in lux hears is spot on.
