Most folk or folk-style performances are posted in the FSGW newsletter. If you're out of town, check their web site at www.fsgw.org. There's almost always a lot going on around DC.

Does this help, or are you looking for something specific?

The Amoskeag Players will be performing a benefit concert in Frederick, Md on October 20th. We will be in the historic Weinberg Center for the Arts.

The concert , The Music the Shaped a Nation, will be completely composed of music from the mid-19th century done on period instuments played in the period style. Should be a fun show.

I'm playing at Pat Troy's in Alexandria on Sunday September 9th. It's an early show, starting at 6.00 pm. (It's Grandparents Day!).

I'll be visiting the area in Oct; at the FSGW gathering Oct 19 to 22 and then playing at Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance Coffee House located at the Sotterly Plantation (301-862-1928 for concert info) on Thu Oct 18.

You will want to check out Mudcatter, Seamus Kennedy who performs in the DC area pretty regularly. His calendar is here.

As Rita says above, as a Mudcatter and DC area music lover, you will also want to check out the Folk Society of Greater Washington (FSGW) and the FSGW Getaway that is happening in mid-Oct. There will be many Mudcatters there.

This clicky will get you to more updated info on the Getaway than the previous one.

There are several dozen Mudcatters who live in the DC area.

And beyond the names, there's a lot of good home-made music going on around here. FSGW may be your link to finding the music-makers among us, in whatever genre most amuses you.

Just confirmed!

A Foklore Society of Greater Washington Special Event...

WOODY REDISCOVERED
an Exploration of Woody Guthrie's Lesser Known Songs
with Steve Suffet and Anne Price

Saturday • September 30, 2006 • 8:00 to 10:30 PM
at the home of Kathie Mack • 7208 Maple Avenue • Takoma Park, MD

3 blocks from the Takoma Park Metro station. Suggested donation: $15.

There are more than 3,000 songs in the Woody Guthrie Archives, and Woody recorded well over 300 of them. However, only about 30 are well known today. In this musical workshop Anne Price and Steve Suffet will introduce you to a few of Woody Guthrie's other 2,970+ songs. Some were recorded or published in Woody's own lifetime; others were discovered among his effects after his death. All deserve to be recognized as the gems that they are. Come prepared to learn some new old songs!

Steve Suffet is best described as an old-fashioned folksinger. His repertoire is a mixture of railroad songs, trucker songs, cowboy songs, union songs, old time ballads, blues, ragtime, Gospel, bluegrass, topical-political songs, and whatever else tickles his fancy.

Anne Price is a versatile and gifted singer born and raised in New York City. She sings a wide variety of traditional folk songs and many songs from contemporary songwriters, as well as songs she has written. Her wide repertoire includes Appalachian ballads, Irish and Scottish songs, country songs, songs of the sea, cowboy songs, songs about work and the labor move-ment, feminist songs, and love songs.

Both Steve and Anne have been Woody Guthrie fans since childhood.

For reservations, information about space availability, or directions via Metro or by driving, please contact Kathie Mack via e-mail (click name) or 301-270-5367.

For additional information about the performers or FSGW, please contact Charlie Baum via e-mail (click name) or 301-589-6855.

Be there!

--- Steve

It's now September and time to refresh this thread!

In addition to our performance in Takoma Park, MD, on September 30 described above, Anne and I will be presenting Woody Rediscovered in New York City on December 17. The time and location still need to be confirmed, but the venue will likely be an apartment in lower Manhattan and the time will probably be in the late afternoon, making it a pre-supper Sunday house concert.

We also are working on plans to take Woody Rediscovered on the road in 2007. Meanwhile, we hope to see a lot of DC area Mudcatters at Kathie Mack's house at the end of this month.

--- Steve
