I've been trying to locate an old thread, (1-2 years old), that had the subject of patter between songs while other instruments are re-tuning. Damn, I wish I'd traced it. I've searched everything I can think of, from "Patter", to "Tuning Between Songs", to "Jokes", to "Humor" and "Humor Between Songs", and I just can't find it. Can anyone help me find this thread?

Our band changes tunings from time to time. In fact we arrange our sets around tunings, and dead air just ain't cutting it. I realize that an innate ability to talk to the crowd is the ideal, and perhaps that will come in time. But it's not innate yet. Any suggestions? Thanks, BlueJay

Blue Jay--

I've started doing this too. Fortunately not everybody changes at once. So while I'm off retuning banjo (longest 45 secs in the world), my two guitarists are doing ragtime instrumental fillers.

Thanks, Jeff. That's the one. Good advice in that thread. CC- Isn't it hard tuning the banjo while the other folks are playing ragtime? Perhaps I'm naive. Thanks, BlueJay

Go watch and listen to Vin Garbutt as much as possible! His tuning sessions are hilarious.

One of the Limeliters, assigned the job of "covering" the tuning, said something like this:

"While my partners are tuning, they've asked me to fill in the time with a little wit, humor, philosophy. I do it with enthusiasm. Or I did. Some of the audience said, 'We'd rather listen to them tune up!'"

Dave Oesterreich

A couple of my favourites:

"We tune because we care, folks."

"Damn! It was in tune when I bought it."

"It was in tune when I nicked it" usually gets a laugh.
