Calling all Devon Mudcatters....

Ned & I are supporting Kate Rusby Trio at the Yealmpton Centre, Stray Park, Devon, UK. September 4 Now we all know the Kate Rusby Trio are going to go down very well, don't we? Brilliantly, I should think. I mean they are only one of the hottest acts in the UK at the moment. Gulp. That set me to wondering. Would any Devon Mudcatters care to come along and cheer Mad Rush too, just a little bit...?

We have been rehearsing.

This is definitely even more stressful than the time I (and 4 others) shared a dressing room with a famous TV comedian, and he was wearing only a string vest and trousers. Strewth, thank God it wasn't only string underpants!! Still, I have to say he was a perfect gentleman and guess what? He told us jokes.

Cheers Deni

We felt similarly overawed when asked to be the support act for Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick at Holmfirth.
We arrived for soundchecks , suitably early, only to be told by the soundman to wait outside. We carry no instruments -- only our voices --- so obviously looked like a group of middle - aged fans wanting to be in the front row.
In the end it was a lovely evening

This is terrific. Wish I could hop across the puddle to come cheer you on. I just got the Poozies CD and have been enjoying listening to that (late to the game, I know), and "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" and "Bold Riley" are two of the songs I like best to sing.

I'm hoping you'll report back to us after the event ...

WyoWoman (who's been missing in action so long neither of you may know me)

Oh, Congratulations! What a thrill! I got to hear Kate and the band live for the first time this summer in Vancouver. Enjoy every second! (I'd come to cheer in person if this was happening in Canada).

Wow! Deni this is fantastic, I think Kate Rusby is spot on. I like singing her new one 'lullabies'.

Have a great night

Firstly, Good luck with the gig.
Secondly, the whole band are lovely to work with, and if brother Jo is doing the sound all will be fine.
He's a really great FOH engineer.
Big Smiles and "GO FOR IT!!"

WYSI
Sad UK term for the first act in a concert, whose only purpose in life is to warm up the audience, prior to the main "Turn" !!
Thankless job, mostly, but...just occasionally, the "Support" outshines the "Turn"..!!

Ah, thank, I see. In the US that's the opening act, as in "I'm opening for..."

A lot of the greats started by opening for someone else.

Sometimes it's a big tour with one act booked to open for the whole tour, and sometimes the main artist has a say about who it will be and exercises a bit of patronage about it, bringing someone new to the fore and sharing a number with them.

Whatever!

GO DENI!

Deni ...

Just got your CD (I also edit Pay The Reckoning in another life).

The quality of the stuff on the CD means you'll walk it!

Can't make it down to see you, but keep me abreast of your movements should you make it as far as London.

Deni,
Can't make it on 4th, but all I can say is Kate may find you a hard act to follow!

Got a lovely pic of Angus the Yorkshire Terror for you, will snail it - pics take hours to E-mail!
Great weekend, enjoyed your company, last night we chilled at the camp site after KB got SERIOUSLY relaxed at the survivors sing and I got knackered at the Ceilidh - sat round telling stories.....A refreshing and wonderful way to end a festival.
See you all soon, good luck with the gig
Lucy

Thanks all. Big smiles and go for it would seem to be the order of the day. Of course, being a woman, I also worry about whether I'll be able to fit into my clothes on the day. Maybe that worry will eclipse the other. Once I was wearing a pair of very tight trousers and they split right up the back. I had to back into the the ladies lavatoire (still smiling)and send a friend round the audience scrounging small safety pins. I did a passable repair job, but moved rather stiffly on stage for the rest of the set. What if one of the pins had..well pinged open...painful! On Tuesday I shall pack spare clothes.

nutty. what's your act called? Or aren't you telling? i should have thought supporting those two must have been a huge thrill. Did you converse with the greats, much?

wyo woman. we wondered where you'd gone. I will certainly report back. (Ned would kill me if he could read some of these messages. I expect he wishes my split trousers would remain a secret.)

derrymacash. Thanks ever so. I'll get a link up to Pay the Reckoning Soon. It's a great site. In the winter I'll have endless time to try out all the tunes. 'Spect I'll go to the big smoke one day. Probably just to stare open-mouthed at the sights though. I've only been twice for weekends. We're country mouses.

Thanks also to WYSIWIG and Ralphie and the rest for being so supportive.

Roger in Sheffield. Message received and understood. WILCO if poss.

Lucy/Hawker Thanks for the extravagant vote of confidence. I'll swap pics with you when I get mine developed. Lovely big audience you had on Saturday at Wadebridge. I tried to capture the whole scene on camera, and the kids sounded really sweet and were a credit to you. Angus the Yorkshire Terror had his picture taken with Ned the other day. Yes, the same Ned who wouldn't be caught dead holding his lead as he looks so puny. Our kids had a great time in your workshops and are really looking forward to the next one. This makes me feel very happy, as normally when I mention a folk festival they groan. I've just noticed that the Wareham Wail banquet is not suitable for children so I don't think we can go. Cos what would we do with them, while we're in there? Next year,I'll organise better.

Cheers everyone.

deni

Your girls did great, to see kids from 4 years to 10 years old perform a longsword dance, with ribbons instead of swords, after aprox. 1 hour's tuition, in a concert, on the main stage, to a band they had NEVER heard before was daunting for me - let alone the kids, They were ALL STARS!!!!
Take pins and spare clothes that way NOTHING can go wrong!!!
Take some valium too!!!LOL
May go to Dawlish Friday for the night, Cornwall Songwriters are hosting a singaround apparently

Derrymacash. I followed the blue clicky and it was the end of the rainbow for me. Thanks more than I can say. Will be in touch.

Nice to see you Alice. Haven't heard from you in a while. What'y'up to? Anything exciting. When you coming to England?

Hawker. Did you see the article in Efdss mag re maypole dancing? Shall I clip it for you? Would sure like to see that at a Cornish or Devon festival... Angus' pic was supreme. We were less so, but if we weighed 4 llbs we might look more ...ow you say?...delicate. Cheers and speak soon Deni

Don't get hung up on supporting a 'big name'. Folk music is about equality- you'll get a good reception whatever cock-ups that you think you've made, so get up on stage and be yourselves and do your thing. You've been asked to support for a reason- that reason is that someone who matters thinks you're good. Just enjoy it all.

Deni, got the article from EFDSS Mag, joined 2 months ago.....I do teach maypole, but it's a hell of a thing to drag round at a festival! Our school bought one last year for me to run amok with, it really is brilliant, and the kids love it!
Good luck on the 4th, I am more nervous about meeting the county advisor for Music on Monday!!!! could mean some work if I can impress!!!!
Your pics were difficult, as from 1 side, I had Ned with his back to me and from the other, you, and front-on is definately more flattering (you can hide behind your piano accordion!!!) but wasn't possible at the gig wihtout upsetting the audience!!
Cheers,
Lucy
