Does anyone have any information about the origins/date of this neat little song the Watersons recorded? I checked the DT and Google and can't find anything.

There's various info on the forum, but here's someting useful from this site.

From A. L. Lloyd's notes: Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson heard a man named Joe Udal sing this at a shepherd's meet in the Lake District in 1974, and took a fancy to it. As well they might.

Cheers!
Ian

That's in the liner notes of the album... but I have a feeling the song predates 1974, although I could be wrong...

Course it does, Kim. They got it from the singing of Joe Udall. You could try looking him up, now, on the net!

Cheers!

I don't know about the above, (though I do love the Watersons), but I do know a really nifty little 3-part rythmic (sp?) spoken word piece to teach to a group, and it mentions the same topic!

Divide the group into 3 parts, and teach each group one part.

Group 1:

The chickens (pause)
are eating (pause)
the toe-may-toes!

Group 2: Even the rabbits inhibit their habits when (mini-pause)
carrots (pause)
are (pause)
green!

Group 3: Squaaaaaaassssshh! (pause)
Squaaaaasssshhhhh! (pause)
Squuaaaaasssshhhh! (pause)

When each group completes their part, they start it over again. All three groups recite their parts SIMULTANEOUSLY!!! After they have gotten them down pat, they can walk around, and mill amongst the people with other parts. They then recite their parts TO people with another part, who are saying THEIR own part to back to them at the same time! If it's being done in the proper spirit, sooner or later everyone will dissolve into gales of laughter!!!

Marymac

I have this by the Wolfe Tones, very different verses (same idea, though), and the chorus goes Treat me daughter kindly, and shield her from all harm, which I like a lot. If anybody is interested in alternative versions but not added info, I'll post those lyrics too.

The late John A. Lomax jr. recorded this song on Folkways(FG3501 A) in 1956. It was one of the favorite songs , handed down in the Lomax family, he said. I've misplaced the printed copy.

There is a folkways album of Dillard Chandler, with liner notes by John Cohen, giving the history of the song; unfortunately, I pitched my copy (so it's not Fokways Record FA2309, which I still have). If I recall correctly, it pretty much jibes with what Lynn W. says, i.e., fairly old but not traditional. However, her clickie seems not to work.

The song is at The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music Title: THE FARMER'S DAUGHTER, composed by James A. Bland, 1883.

The Traditional ballad index in that entry is to read 'not later than'.
