I'm a new fan of Geoff Maldaur. Does anyone have the words to "Wait til I put on my Robe", and "Some of these days" ?

You have great taste. I know that Wait 'Til I Put On My Robe, was something Geoff picked up from, as I recall, a gospel duo who used to sing on the streets of Los Angeles -- I may have garbled the story. But his diction on that tune is pretty clear, and the words have been used in several other songs: "Jordan River is chilly and cold, chills the body but not the soul, etc." As for the other, I can't call it to mind at the moment.

I wish more people would be aware of just how great Geoff is nowadays -- better than ever, and that's saying something.

Muldaur is my new hero. I'm going to start checking out his earlier stuff. I don't know how I've missed finding him all these years. I have trouble hearing, that's why I asked for the lyrics. Thanks for the come back. RonU

Ron,

Geoff Muldaur is a great treasure. He has a wealth of if stuff you'll enjoy. Be sure to listen to his early stuff with the various jug bands he was involved with. Most notably Jim Kweskin Jug Band and maybe the Even Dozen Jug Band with John Sebastian.

Geoff did several albums with his then wife, Maria Muldaur, who was also a member of the Kweskin Jug Band (Matia D'Amato). He did 2 or 3 albums with Amos Garrett - a phenomenal guitartist (he did the solo in Midnight at the Oasis). One of my favorite all time albums is Gone Fishing that they did on Rounder Records. Both Geoff and Amos were with Paul Butterfield for 2 albums. There is always Sleepy Man Blues - a Verve recording of Geoff solo early to mid sixties. Check out Secret Handshake from 2 or 3 years ago. There is also a video available from Homespun Tapes with lessons and conversations with Geoff. Did I mention that I am also a fan?

I've been waiting to see Geoff Muldaur for about 30 years now since I heard him sing Devil Got My Woman on the Electra Blues Project record. It was pretty scary sounding to someone who had never heard the blues. He'll be in Ft Worth in early November - and I've got front row tickets. Hot Damn !

His solo turn on "Viola Lee Blues" on the Kweskin "See Reverse Side for Title" is wonderful, and rocks like crazy."Sloppy Drunk" on "Pottery Pie" (unless it's "Sweet Potatoes") is mostly the same song Taj calls "Leavin' Trunk", and so does Ry Cooder on "Boomer's Story".

can't get through to the website but like the guy who first heard his stuff on The Blues Project - mention of his name had my attention immediately.

the devil got my woman and leaving here blues were amongst the tracks that had me wearing out three copies of that record - it was made of strange stiff vinyl - unlike The Beatles records which were bendy.

someone was asking about DADGAD on the Davy Graham thread - Devil got my woman sounds a bit like it - certainly that haunting intro accompanied by mandoline - can be played with DADGAD

Someone said back in '01 that Geoff was "better than ever, and that's saying something!" Guess what?...true to this very day. I have had the great fortune to see him live many times lately here in the L.A. area (I think he must live here now), and he just stuns the crowd. And, man, he tells some wonderful stories about the "folk boom" days and all the musicians he's been friends with over the years. Go out and buy all his latest CDs- they are teriffic. You can also hear him singing and playing a bunch in John Sebastian's J-Band (another album to go out and get)!

Anyone interested in Geoff Muldaur needs to check out "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" a live CD recorded in Germany. Just Geoff and his Martin slothead. Wonderful stuff.

He played at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley last year with Fritz Richmond, also formerly of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and there was a line around the block an hour in advance to get in. They were as spectacular as when I first heard them in 1965 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The crowd looked like they had probably all been there too--graying hippies.

A little birdie told me today that CF Martin will be offering a Geoff Muldaur signature model guitar. Pretty cool. I'm not usually one for these signature models but I'll be sure to try one of these out if I run across it.

Jim Kweskin played in Sommerville, MA about 2 weeks ago accompanied by fiddle and bass. Still an incredible fingerpicker; still has an incredibly diverse repetoire. The most interesting thing he said is that there will be a memorial consert for Fritz Richmond, Easter Sunday, at Passim, site of the old Club 47. Included will be himself, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian, and the Charles River Valley Boys. Unfortunately it is already sold out. Let's hope someone records it.
